The renovation was being undertaken on Wedge One, which was the
first of the five radial sections of the building to be renovated.
It was five days from completion when the attack occurred . On
September 10, 2001, employees of the United States Department of
Defense began moving back into their newly renovated office spaces
inside of Wedge 1, one day later some of them were killed.
Of the thousands of people in the building at the time of the
attack, only 123 people were killed. Of those, none were high-level
officials.
Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was safe in his office on the
opposite side of the building.
