Hydrocarbon Law for Dummies
Must Read - A quote...."March 24, 2007—Iraqi Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, who was in Japan last week for a four-day official visit, says U.S.-led coalition forces should be able to withdraw from his country in a year and half at the latest, a Japanese newspaper reported on Saturday."

What America Needs Now: A Prophetic Social Movement that Speaks Moral Truth to Amoral Power
A quote...."The most urgent part of the moral crisis besetting America, clearly, arises from the realm of power. Forces more ruthless and unprincipled than have ever had ruled this nation in its more than two centuries of democratic governance now hold sway."

The Fake Fight Over the Iraq War - That Was an Antiwar Vote?
A quote...."Although nothing of any significance actually happened on March 23, to read liberal commentators one would think we'd witnessed some profound upheaval, courtesy of Nancy Pelosi's skillful uniting of the various Democratic factions. What she accomplished in practice was the neutering of the antiwar faction. In the end only eight Democrats (plus two Republicans) voted against the Supplemental Appropriation out of opposition to the war. The balance of 202 no votes came from Republicans who opposed Pelosi's bill as anti-Bush and antiwar. So, in Congress 420 representatives officially have no problem with the war in Iraq continuing until the eve of the next election. Ten are foursquare against it, which is more or less where Congress has always been, in terms of committed naysayers."

Strikes on Baghdad's Green Zone on the Rise
A quote...."BAGHDAD, March 29 -- Iraqi insurgents are increasingly hitting Baghdad's fortresslike Green Zone with rockets and mortar shells, officials said Wednesday.  -  Insurgents have struck inside the Green Zone, which includes the U.S. Embassy, on six of the past seven days, once with deadly consequences. A U.S. soldier and a U.S. government contractor were killed Tuesday night by a rocket attack that also seriously wounded a civilian, military and embassy officials said. One soldier and at least three other civilians received minor injuries, U.S. Embassy spokesman Lou Fintor said."

Brzezinski: Avoid disaster with Iran
A quote...."But Brzezinski reserved his harshest criticism for the current president, George W. Bush, saying he'd helped cultivate "a self-paralyzing culture of fear" after the Sept. 11 attacks, squandered the government's credibility and fed anti-Americanism in many parts of the world by failing to recognize "it is absolutely futile for the United States to be waging what is in essence a colonial war in a post-colonial age."

Britain takes softer line as Iran's hardliners seek to escalate crisis
A quote...." British attempts to cool the dispute with Tehran over the seizure of 15 soldiers and Marines were dealt a blow yesterday as Iran's hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused London of mishandling the situation.  -  Speaking at a rally in Khuzestan near where the sailors were seized, President Ahmadinejad said the sailors had trespassed into Iranian waters and he accused London of turning to the UN and the European Union for support over the detentions. "Instead of apologising and expressing regret over the action taken, [the UK] started to claim that we are in their debt and shouted in various international councils," he said."

Moscow calls for UN probe into capture of U.K. seamen by Iran
A quote...."MOSCOW, March 30 (RIA Novosti) - The United Nations secretariat should conduct an independent investigation into the detention of 15 British seamen by Iran, Russia's Foreign Ministry said Friday.  -  "Taking into account that the British side insists that its servicemen were fulfilling their UN Security Council mandate, we believe the UN Secretariat should prepare an independent report on the incident shortly," the ministry said following a meeting between Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Yakovenko and British Ambassador to Russia Tony Brenton."

Russia, Saudi Arabia sign $100-mln contract to build oil pipeline
A quote...."BEIRUT, March 31 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian company signed Saturday the first ever contract, worth more than $100 million, to build an oil pipeline in Saudi Arabia with a Saudi company.  -  Stroytransgaz, a construction arm of Russia's energy giant Gazprom [RTS: GAZP], and Saudi Aramco concluded the contract in Dhahran. This is a breakthrough for Russian business to a totally new market, which is the most attractive in the Middle East."

Oh my...first China, now Russia.  How could this happen?  Isn't Saudi Arabia the 51st American State?

Will gas exporters unite in a cartel?
A quote...."MOSCOW. (RIA Novosti economic commentator Mikhail Khmelev) - On April 9, Doha, the capital of Qatar, will host the Forum of Gas Exporting Countries.  -  Only one development is expected from the event: players on the global gas market will try to reach an agreement on setting up an international alliance like the one that unites the majority of oil exporting countries."

Economists cut back for U.S. economic forecasts
A quote...."    WASHINGTON, March 30 (Xinhua) -- A string of downbeat economic reports, including evidence that companies are paring back investment spending and signs that housing is taking another hit, have prompted economists to reduce their forecasts for U.S. economic growth in the first half of 2007, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday."

Housing's impact on jobs seen spreading
A quote...."NEW YORK (Reuters) - The weak housing market is starting to affect overall U.S. employment, and job losses that are now limited to sectors like construction will likely spread to other parts of the labor market in coming months.  -  For builders, realtors and mortgage lenders, the full impact of the downturn may take more than year to work through the system."

Democrats' Calls for Resignations are Pointless Diversions
Some quotes...."All these calls from Democrats in Congress for Bush administration people to resign are missing, or deliberately obfuscating, the point.""....the problem isn’t the officials; it’s the laws that were passed--usually with Democratic Party support.  -  For that matter, most of the most egregious crimes against the Constitution of this most criminal administration have relied, for their justification, on the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force passed by a Congress that included a Democratic-led Senate."

Turmoil in Pakistan: Baloch vow fight for independence
A quote...."Since 1947, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan (Land of the Pure), a military dictatorship, has been a fragile entity perpetually on the brink of internal civil war, and constantly at loggerheads with India over contested Kashmir. It is a destabilizing factor on the Asian continent. The recent sacking of Pakistan's Supreme Court Justice by President Pervez Musharraf in March of 2007 is just another one of many straws weighing on the central government's back in Islamabad, a portent of what more is to come."

One shouldn't forget however that the US is currently mucking about in Baluchistan  encouraging factions there to go after Iran, which is not the Baloch's fight.  The US, with its meddling policy of "creative instability” may very well destabilize Pakistan, and it doesn't appear anyone in the US really cares. - mpg

Bush Has Been So Bad, Even 'Hil' Clinton Can Be President
A quote...."Just how bad is the damage George W. Bush has inflicted upon the future of the Republican Party? One word: Hillary.   -  George W. Bush's incompetent, crony-driven Banana Republic-like policies and leadership have so completely undermined the Republican Party that an extremely weak and vulnerable Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton, will likely trounce the GOP's sacrificial-lamb-like standard-bearer in 2008. Yes, the same Hillary Clinton who was once despised more than a shotgun-toting Dick Cheney at a lawyer-filled hunting camp, thanks to George W. No Good Choices in the Halls of Power:
Must Read - A quote...."On Friday, March 23, the Democrats in the House of Representatives pushed through the “U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans’ Health, and Iraq Accountability Act” by a vote of 218-212. The bill gives the Bush administration some $100 billion to continue the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, while calling for U.S. combat troops to leave Iraq by September 1, 2008."

Neoconservative radicalism has reshaped our political spectrum
A quote...."David Brooks' column in The New York Times this morning contains several important observations. It would maximize clarity in our political discussions if journalists could just ingest Brooks' central point: the dominant right-wing political movement in this country that has spawned and driven the Bush presidency has nothing to do with -- it is in fact overtly hostile to -- the ostensible principles of Goldwater/Reagan small-government conservatism. Though today's so-called "conservatives" exploit the Goldwater/Reagan mythology as a political prop, they don't believe in those principles in any way. That movement is the very antithesis of those principles."

Jeremy Scahill on Soldiers of Fortune

Fallujah Fears a 'Genocidal Strategy'
A quote...."FALLUJAH, Mar 30 (IPS) - Iraqis in the volatile al-Anbar province west of Baghdad are reporting regular killings carried out by U.S. forces that many believe are part of a 'genocidal' strategy.  -  Since the mysterious explosion at the Shia al-Askari shrine in Samara in February last year, more than 100 Iraqis have been killed daily on average, without any forceful action by the Iraqi government and the U.S. military to stop the killings.  -  U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces working with them are also executing people seized during home raids and other operations, residents say."

The Evasion Of Peace Process

Senate Passes $123 billion More for Iraq and Afghanistan Wars
A quote...."While the headlines will read that the Senate voted to withdraw U.S. troops in Iraq, the peace movement recognizes that the Senate bill will extend the war not end it.  The exit date in the bill is merely a goal for the removal of combat troops, and there are large loopholes that would allow a commander in chief to keep as many troops as s/he wants in Iraq.  The bill provides $123 billion to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – nearly $20 billion more requested by Bush."

Rep. Kucinich: Stop Funding the War
A quote...."Dennis Kucinich is a Democratic congressman from Ohio. He was one of only 14 Democrats to oppose the current Iraq supplemental bill, which sets a deadline for a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. The bill, the Iraq Accountability Act, did not, however, cut funding for the war. Here he speaks with Michael Shank about the reasons for his vote, his fears of an attack on Iran, his concerns about the future of the Democratic Party, and his faith that new American leadership will craft a different partnership with the world community."

Kucinich Blasts Democrats
Interview - James Harris: interviews Dennis Kucinich at TruthDig - A quote...."Not everyone was celebrating the passage of the Iraq spending bill on Friday. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, told Truthdig it’s “a disaster for the American people.” The presidential candidate went on to explain his dissatisfaction with his party: “It’s the same kind of thinking that led us into Iraq— that we didn’t have any alternatives.”  -  Download MP3 audio file  (running time: about 12 mins / 11.2 MB)

Real US battles with Iran still lie ahead
A quote...."As the war of words between Iran and the United States continues to escalate, the psychological-warfare campaign of the latter is assuming greater and more sinister proportions, so much so that there are now good reasons to believe the US has orchestrated the kidnapping of a former Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps general in Istanbul."

Beyond Munich: The UN Security Council Helps Disarm a Prospective Further Victim of U.S. Aggression
A quote...."Imagine that when Hitler was threatening to invade Poland, after having swallowed Czechoslovakia—with the help of the Western European powers' appeasement of Hitler at Munich in September 1938—the League of Nations imposed an arms embargo on Poland, making it more difficult for the imminent victim to defend itself, and at the same time suggested that Poland was the villainous party. That didn’t happen back in 1939, but in a regression from that notorious era of appeasement something quite analogous is happening now."

"Here is the United States, still fighting a brutal war of conquest in Iraq, which it is now doing with UN Security Council  approval, with open plans and threats to attack Iran and engage in “regime change,” gathering aircraft carriers off the coast of Iran, already engaging in subversive and probing attacks on the prospective target, and the UN Security Council, instead of warning and threatening the aggressor warns, threatens and imposes sanctions on the prospective victim!"

Britain stumbles in diplomatic dance with Iran
A quote...."With the crisis over the 15 captured British sailors and marines seemingly getting worse from day to day, there is increasing scrutiny over how the issue has been handled by the Blair government."

If Blair handles Iran like he did Iraq, we'll all be at war soon...which is no doubt exactly what the Neocons want.- mpg

Britain fails to gain strong UN support in row with Iran
A quote...."Britain on Thursday failed to secure strong UN Security Council support for its tug-of-war with Iran over the capture and continued detention of 15 British naval personnel by Tehran.  -  The 15-member body adopted a watered-down statement expressing "grave concern" at the detention of 15 British sailors and marines but stopped well short of London's call for censuring Tehran."

'U.S. Middleman' Warned Not to Violate Iran's Border
A quote...."Is the United Kingdom a spent force, intruding across Iran's borders at the behest of its masters in the United States? According to Iran's judiciary-controlled Fars News Agency, "Britain is a defeated and isolated power who is operating as the middleman of the United States."

Perspective: Britain vs Iran: Just don't mention the war
A quote...."Ever since the British sailors and marines crisis erupted six days ago upon their abduction by Iranian forces, both sides have been steadfastly maintaining that this an isolated incident, a local dispute, whose solution is to have no effect on any of the other outstanding issues between both countries."

Call that humiliation?
A quote...."I share the outrage expressed in the British press over the treatment of our naval personnel accused by Iran of illegally entering their waters. It is a disgrace. We would never dream of treating captives like this - allowing them to smoke cigarettes, for example, even though it has been proven that smoking kills. And as for compelling poor servicewoman Faye Turney to wear a black headscarf, and then allowing the picture to be posted around the world - have the Iranians no concept of civilised behaviour? For God's sake, what's wrong with putting a bag over her head? That's what we do with the Muslims we capture: we put bags over their heads, so it's hard to breathe. Then it's perfectly acceptable to take photographs of them and circulate them to the press because the captives can't be recognised and humiliated in the way these unfortunate British service people are."

China overtakes US in car roll-out
A quote...."CHINA overtook the US in passenger car output for the first time last year, adding to the growing list of consumer goods for which it has become the world's biggest supplier.  The surge in Chinese production "is likely to stoke more fear and angst in Washington about the rise of China", according to Joseph Quinlan, Bank of America's chief market strategist, who noted the change in rankings in a research report published earlier this week.  -  Based on data compiled by the bank, China produced about 5.2 million cars in 2006 compared with 4.4 million in the US  -  The US remains well ahead if light trucks, including sport-utility vehicles and pick-ups, are included. italics/bold by website author

Rosie Opens 9/11 Conspiracy 'View' Debate
A quote...."Rosie O'Donnell has never been one to shy away from speaking her mind, but her latest controversial topic of conversation on 'The View' brought up a taboo that most daytime talk shows would never go near – the possibility of a conspiracy on 9/11."

By the way, the blonde (Elizabeth Hasselbeck) is the usual cliché, but listen carefully to what she has to say 2.45 minutes from the end of the video....

Ms. Hasselbeck......

"Listen" (interrupted)

Well can I...(interrupted)

"What is oil in this world....oil is power" (pause, interrupted)

"So if you want to turn that over to them....."

And there it is, openly and no doubt unintentionally blurted out by Ms. Hasselbeck, her statement over looked by the other three woman in the heat of their argument. The real reason the US is in Iraq, the real reason two million Iraqis and possibly as many Iranians will die in bloody violence.  The booty and bling the US and the Bush Neocons invaded Iraq for.

To make it clear to Ms. Hasselbeck and others of her ilk - "that" does not belong to a bunch of bubble heads so they can drive around in their five thousand pound SUVs while hundreds of thousands of people are killed for it. "That" is not worth the thousands of Americans killed and injured so bubble headed dimwits can have a status symbol "That" is the legacy of the Iraqi people, "that" belongs to them and their children.  "That" can NEVER be a reason to barge into someone's country so you can steal "that" from them, to torture them for it, to murder them for it.  Such actions are a violation of the norms of civilized behavior; they violate the UN charter and are considered to be a WAR CRIME. - mpg

The Weight of Wealth
A quote...."The neo-conservative era is built on a simple economic theory - that if there is inflation and other dislocation it is because poor people are using too much of a resource, and those same poor people are using government to avoid the natural market consequences of their immoral and profligate behavior - either by spending too much money on fiscal policy, having too loose a monetary policy, or using regulation."

U.S. Corporate Profits have Peaked, Economists Say. & US central bank sounds inflation warning
A quote...."WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. corporate profits fell in the fourth quarter of 2006, signaling the end of one of the greatest profit cycles in post-war era, economists say.  - Economic growth is slowing, hurting corporations' top line. Meanwhile, costs are rising, squeezing profit margins.  -  "Profits growth has turned decisively down, and the end is not yet in sight," wrote Gabriel Stein, an economist for Lombard Street Research.  -  "As the expansion matures and unit labor costs rise, profit margins will be under pressure," said Stephen Stanley, chief economist for RBS Greenwich Capital.

Despite what the article says, there's still a little more profit left that they havn't yet squeezed out of the US economy.  So instead of the ten year cycle we'll have the seven to eight year cycle.  Still it was a pretty good ride, - one "arranged" fortioutous "terrorist" attack (black flag op.), a couple more in Europe, 4,000-5,000 American dead when the occupation of Iraq finally ends (assuming the US doesn't attack Iran), one to two million dead Iraqis and a bunch of others for a good seven year economic pump priming and a chance to sieze the worlds oil and gas resources.

A pretty decent rate of return all things considered.

Never mind the fact that our constitution prohibits ex post facto (retroactive) laws, I mean that is why we are holding him at Guantánamo right?"

Getting rid of ex post facto (i.e. retroactive) laws is now "Act" number thirty on what was previously "Twenty Nine Acts to Restore Americans' Rights"

Uproar Over Texas Teen's Imprisonment
A quote...."A teenager has been jailed for more than a year for shoving a teacher's aide at her high school, a case that has sparked anger and heightened racial tensions in rural East Texas.  -  Shaquandra Cotton, who is black, claims the teacher's aide pushed her first and would not let her enter school before the morning bell in 2005. A jury convicted the 15-year-old girl in March 2006 on a felony count of shoving a public servant, who was not seriously injured.  -  The girl is in the Ron Jackson Correctional Complex in Brownwood, about 300 miles from her home in Paris. The facility is part of an embattled juvenile system that is the subject of state and federal investigations into allegations that staff members physically and sexually abused inmates. - bold/italics added by website author

Editor's note: an article about Shaqandra Cotton was posted March 21st 2007.  See below.  Of course there was no way to know just how much like Iraq this whole situation really was.  Perhaps the Iraqis shouldn't feel too bad about Abu Ghraib and all the other prisons....after all, we even do "it" to our own children. - mpg

To some in Paris, sinister past is back
Must Read - A quote...."In Texas, a white teenager burns down her family's home and receives probation. A black one shoves a hall monitor and gets 7 years in prison. The state NAACP calls it `a signal to black folks. -  The youth had no prior arrest record, and the hall monitor--a 58-year-old teacher's aide--was not seriously injured. But Shaquanda was tried in March 2006 in the town's juvenile court, convicted of "assault on a public servant" and sentenced by Lamar County Judge Chuck Superville to prison for up to 7 years, until she turns 21.'"

Justice "Texas style" - Pretty soon blacks in Texas are going to feel just like the Iraqis currently do in Iraq. Like it's not their country anymore.

This should be an instructive and salutary lesson for the world.  Wherever you are, if you're colored and there happens to be oil under the ground you're standing on, and a bunch of white people are in the area near you - you're in trouble. - mpg

Instead of bringing him to justice it paid him for his services and helped him escape to South America. That does not lack - in this country, the history of which is pegged to Catholicism - a strong flavor of repentance and penitence. So, by virtue of that law, which was approved in October 2006 and came into effect this March 15, seven hundred thousand Poles will have to confess whether they collaborated with the Communists between 1945 and 1989. Saudi King Slams ‘Illegitimate Occupation’ of Iraq
A quote...."Saudi King Abdullah, whose country is a close US ally, on Wednesday slammed the “illegitimate foreign occupation” of Iraq in an opening speech to the annual Arab summit in Riyadh.  -  “In beloved Iraq, blood is being shed among brothers in the shadow of an illegitimate foreign occupation, and ugly sectarianism threatens civil war,” Abdullah said.  -  He also said that Arab nations, which are planning to revive a five-year-old Middle East peace plan at the summit, would not allow any foreign force to decide the future of the region.

Gee....who could King Abdullah be talking about.....it must be the Chileans, or perhaps the Eskimos, maybe even those sneaky Koreans.....oh no, it has to be those dastardly people from Madagascar....right?

For those who aren't that familiar with the Saudis, they practice their politics with more low key subtlety and discretion than the Chinese, which is saying allot.  They are extremely reticent and reluctant to criticize anyone for anything - even the Israelis.

For King Abdullah to come out and say something like this means, 1) He's really, really ticked off at the Bush Neocons for this disaster and 2) He's also, really, really, scared about the situation getting completely out of control.

It looks like he's discovered what everyone else has about Bush - Bush is a walking contagion, a catastrophe that looks like a man, a plague upon us all, everything he touches he destroys or ruins. - mpg

Operation Bite: April 6 sneak attack by US forces against Iran planned, Russian military sources warn
WAR UPDATE - A quote....WASHINGTON DC, -- The long awaited US military attack on Iran is now on track for the first week of April, specifically for 4 am on April 6, the Good Friday opening of Easter weekend, writes the well-known Russian journalist Andrei Uglanov in the Moscow weekly “Argumenty Nedeli.” Uglanov cites Russian military experts close to the Russian General Staff for his account."

"The attack is slated to last for 12 hours, according to Uglanov, from 4 am until 4 pm local time. Friday is the sabbath in Iran. In the course of the attack, code named Operation Bite, about 20 targets are marked for bombing; the list includes uranium enrichment facilities, research centers, and laboratories."

Seized sailors 'held in Tehran'
A quote...."The 15 Royal Navy personnel who were seized on Friday are being held at an Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps base in Tehran, the BBC has been told."

The Independent and Harretz probably have it right -  this is a retaliatory seizure in response to the American’s capture of five Iranian officials in Arbil this past January.

The Brits won't see their guys until the Americans release the prisoners their holding, possibly not even then.  There’s also some missing Iranian Officers that have "disappeared" lately and until they’re returned the Iranians may remain very uncooperative regarding the entire situation. -  mpg

Demobilizing America
Must Read - A quote...."Excuse me if, at 62, and well into my second era of protest against yet another distant, disastrous, and disabling American war, I express a little confusion. Was it actually like this in Rome while the legions were off fighting on the German frontiers? Was this the way it felt in London while the imperial forces conducted their frontier wars in Afghanistan, or Paris when the Foreign Legion was holding down North Africa? Was this how it felt in Washington when Douglas MacArthur's father was suppressing the Filipinos and General Jacob Smith was turning the island of Samar into a "howling wilderness"? Is this the way it usually feels in the heartlands of great empires until the barbarians actually do come knocking at the gates?"

The Pentagon’s Power to Jail Americans Indefinitely
Some quotes....."The presiding judge in the José Padilla case has held that the Sixth Amendment’s guarantee of a speedy trial does not protect American citizens from being indefinitely incarcerated by the Pentagon."

And...."Our 18th-century American ancestors would have found Judge Cooke’s ruling to be ludicrous. If a military department of government is exempt from the restrictions of the Bill of Rights, then the entire executive branch is exempt for the obvious reason: Whenever the government wants to exempt itself from the Bill of Rights, all it has to do is employ the military to do the dirty deed. The purpose of the Bill of Rights was to protect the American people from the federal government, not a particular department of the federal government."

Congressional oversight is a linchpin of how our democracy works
Must Read - A quote...."It is so inescapably clear that Alberto Gonzales repeatedly lied about what occurred with the U.S. attorney firings that the national media and even many Bush supporters are clearly acknowledging that fact. But what needs to be constantly emphasized is that there is nothing aberrational in any way about Gonazles' behavior in this case."

Democracy Dreaming
A quote...."03/26/07 "ICH  " -- -- What is this thing called democracy?  So easy to talk about, so difficult to make real.  Pure democracy is not what our Founders gave us.  Who would want a simple majority to control the minority?  Instead, America was given a representative democracy within a constitutional republic where laws that protect all people trump majority rule.  Standing between majority-won elections and government power are elected representatives: writing, overseeing and implementing laws.  But when you can no longer trust the elected representatives what happens to American democracy?  It becomes an oxymoron."

Are We Politicians or Citizens?
A quote..."As I write this, Congress is debating timetables for withdrawal from Iraq. In response to the Bush Administration’s “surge” of troops, and the Republicans’ refusal to limit our occupation, the Democrats are behaving with their customary timidity, proposing withdrawal, but only after a year, or eighteen months. And it seems they expect the anti-war movement to support them."

Forget the Biennial Circus of Elections; We Need a New Constitution!
A quote...."About five months ago, Americans of conscience, being good, patriotic citizens, trooped down to their local Diebold slot machines to cast their votes on whether an illegal, immoral, unnecessary war ought to continue. Every news commentator from jaw-perfect Brian Williams and cutesy Katie Couric to pinch-browed David Brooks and jowly, but sapient, Mark Shields agreed: this was a referendum on the war.  -  And what has been the result of the people’s repudiation of the Bush administration’s flagrant abuses of Executive power? Old, feisty jackass, Donald Rumsfeld, was put out to pasture and 30,000 additional troops are being sent to add fuel to Iraq’s conflagration."

“We’ve Done Our Part”
Must Read - A quote...."Dominant United States political culture suppresses minimally honest discussion of the strategic imperial oil considerations that drive U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.  That reactionary and nationally narcissistic nationalistic culture also requires officially relevant political actors to spout childish rhetoric about the U.S. “intervening” in that region to “promote democracy.”

The rape of Iraq's oil
A quote...."The recent cabinet agreement in Baghdad on the new draft oil law was hailed as a landmark deal bringing together the warring factions in the allocation of the country's oil wealth. What was concealed was that this is being forced through by relentless pressure from the US and will sow the seeds of intense future conflict, with serious knock-on impacts on the world economy."

Iraqi deaths survey 'was robust'
A quote...."The British government was advised against publicly criticising a report estimating that 655,000 Iraqis had died due to the war, the BBC has learnt.  -  Iraqi Health Ministry figures put the toll at less than 10% of the total in the survey, published in the Lancet.  -  But the Ministry of Defence's chief scientific adviser said the survey's methods were "close to best practice" and the study design was "robust".  -  Another expert agreed the method was "tried and tested".

Iran-Britain conflict shows the dangers of our ongoing presence in Iraq
A quote...."03/25/07 "Salon" -- -- The ongoing presence of 150,000 troops in the middle of Iraq, under the direction of this administration, entails grave risk of escalation beyond Iraq, whether deliberately or unintentionally -- a fact that is almost completely ignored in our "debate" over whether to withdraw troops. A quote...."March 25, 2007 -- On January 20, 2006, Larry Franklin was sentenced to almost 13 years in prison for passing classified information to Steve Rosen and Keith Weissman of AIPAC, the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee. Rosen and Weissman are currently under indictment for accepting classified information from Franklin[1]. Unbeknownst to all parties, the FBI was secretly spying on the meetings between Franklin, Rosen and Weissman. What most Americans are unaware of is that Larry Franklin worked at the Pentagon in the Office of Special Plans, which was set up by Donald Rumsfeld. Larry Franklin worked directly under Douglas Feith. 1 year removed from the sentencing of Franklin, Americans were able to tune in to CSPAN and watch the shameless speeches made by prominent US officials to AIPAC concerning Israeli security and the strategic alliance between the US and Israel."

The Frat Boys and Their Holocaust - Is it One Million Now?
Must Read - A quote...."While the Bush Administration reports the overall death toll of Iraqis since the invasion in the few tens of thousands (after all, when you’re spending half a trillion dollars to kill people, you need to show some success on paper), the Iraqi government (sic) has recently admitted that the figure is more like 150,000. This apparent concession is perhaps to avoid being cynically laughed out of the Middle East by all its inhabitants, who know things are much, much worse. Last year Lancet reported, using well-approved statistical measurements, that the median figure is more like 655,000, perhaps higher, perhaps lower. Well, now Dr. Gideon Polya, a Melbourne scientist and writer who has published some 130 works in four decades, has stated in a February 7, 2007 Countercurrents article (see: http://www.countercurrents.org/iraq-polya070207.htm ) that the true figure exceeds one million war-related deaths! Russia’s foreign minister: Unipolar World "Not Happening"
Some quotes...."Echoing President Vladimir Putin, Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has gone on record saying that a “unipolar world is just not happening” and that this is a hard fact the US should learn to live with."

And...."Elaborating further on Russia’s unhappiness with the whole situation, Sergei Lavrov said that without Washington’s hardheaded approach, problems like Iran’s nuclear dossier and the situation in Iraq would have been solved a long time ago. As to the Iranians’ refusal to comply with international demands, much of the problem, including the Korean peninsula, stem from Washington’ refusal to mend fences with Tehran on the basis of internationally recognized principles. Lavrov believes Washington should display similar flexibility when dealing with Tehran."

Look Out, It's a Paper Tiger!
A quote...."People, I say it unflinchingly, and with the utmost confidence that many share my viewpoint now and many more tomorrow, that this House bill was unprincipled, and that the Democratic leadership, headed by "Nancy Impeachment is off the table Pelosi" failed again to pass anything with real fangs, passing instead a premeditated paper tiger which was guaranteed to come out stillborn. For those of us who know what a real tiger looks like, the result was far from surprising. There are certain characteristics unique to the species which only a few, mostly isolated members of the Democratic Party's top echelon posses, so the travesty in the "carrying out the people's will" was a foregone conclusion."

Terrorized by 'War on Terror'  -  How a Three-Word Mantra Has Undermined America
A quote...."The "war on terror" has created a culture of fear in America. The Bush administration's elevation of these three words into a national mantra since the horrific events of 9/11 has had a pernicious impact on American democracy, on America's psyche and on U.S. standing in the world. Using this phrase has actually undermined our ability to effectively confront the real challenges we face from fanatics who may use terrorism against us."

NYC City Police Spied Broadly Before GOP Convention & The President’s Prison
Two good stories by the NYT, my goodness are they developing a trend for themselves?

Not to be churlish.....oh what the heck - let's be churlish.  These articles along with two other stories the Times has covered recently, the SWIFT monitoring of international bank transactions and the FISA violations of  everyone’s voice and e-mail traffic not only affected the peons a.k.a. "the little people" but also the wealthy elites of this nation

Therefore that might explain why the Times choose to cover these particular stories as apposed to all the other criminal activity going on in our country.  Because rest assured, the "wealthy elites" definitely don't like people listening in to their phone conversations, monitoring their bank transactions or establishing dictatorial precedents like Gitmo, which could potentially be used to violate "their precious" civil rights at some point in the future.

Regrettably the Times still seems to have this complete inability to "follow the money" and the corrosive effects money is having on the pitiful remnants of this nation's democratic institutions along with the destructive effects the hubris and degenerate attitudes of this society's wealthy elites are having on the social contract.

Not to mention of course being utterly unable to "connect the dots" regarding 9/11.

Only the future will tell if the New York Times still has the ability to regain its long lost institutional fortitude for standing up to power. - mpg

Disapproval on Iraq [Occupation] Hits Record
A quote...."Feb. 26, 2007 — A record number of Americans disapprove of the war in Iraq, and a clear majority now favors the eventual withdrawal of U.S. forces, even if civil order has not been restored there — potentially a tipping point in public attitudes on the war."

So....?  Let's be crystal clear about this shall we, the DemoRepub party still needs three to four more years to wind down this ten year cycle of economic creative destruction before they launch their next war.  If the economy starts tanking sooner than expected however, they'll just launch their war with Iran a little earlier than planned.   It's all so pathetically predictable.

The opinions of the men and woman who are currently serving in our nation's armed forces have never changed where our government told them to go and who they were told to kill - not ever.  And that isn't going to change anytime soon.

Also none of the opinions expressed by the American public have ever changed this country's policies regarding the avaricious desires of the Military-Industrial-Oil-Complex, except perhaps in one particularly important case.  And that event - called Vietnam - was so traumatic to our illustrious wealthy elites and the neocon monsters they now conspire with that they embarked on a thirty year Straussian campaign to permanently change our frail and deeply flawed "democratic" republic into their sick, perverted and twisted version of the New Roman Empire.

A plan that involved the murder of almost three thousand Americans along with millions of people in the Middle East.

A plan that involved the desecration of all that this nation has ever publicly professed it stood for.

Everyone should understand that we're all simply cattle to these wealthy elites and their neocon brethren. We're all just food to them.  Would you ask your steak what it wants?  Would you ask your baked potato how it feels? The question one has to ask is why ABC has even bothered to ask the food for an opinion when it doesn't effect any of the outcomes?

One would have to guess it's perhaps a sentimental homage to the last vestiges and archaic traditions of democracy that used to exist in this country.

Perhaps the necons and their rich masters are even getting a little nervous about the answers? - mpg

Subverting Iran - Washington's Covert War inside Iran
