Repercussions of a Just War
Must Read - A quote...."The foundation of modern international politics — the nation state — was first laid out in the treaty of Westphalia, which put an end to Europe’s religious wars of the seventeenth century. At its core, sovereignty is the notion that a state has sole authority over its land and people and is guaranteed the right of non-intervention in its internal affairs by outside powers."

War with Syria? The Military Option
Must Read - A quote...."War with Syria? Peace with Syria? - A big military operation against Hamas in the Gaza strip? A cease-fire with Hamas? - Our media discuss these questions dispassionately, as if they were equivalent options. Like a person in a showroom making a choice between two cars. This one is good, and so is the other one. So which should one buy? - And nobody cries out: War is the height of stupidity!

Military or Market-Driven Empire Building: 1950-2008
A quote...."A clear sign of the long-term economic decay of the US global competitive position between 2002-2008 is evidenced by the fact that a 40% depreciation of the dollar has failed to substantially improve the US balance of payments, let alone produce a trade surplus. Despite the handicap of appreciating currencies, China, Germany and Japan continued to accumulate trade surpluses, especially with the US. While the US spent hundreds of billions in Asian wars, CIA propaganda and subversive operations in the former USSR, Eastern Europe, the Baltic States, the Caribbean (Cuba/Venezuela) and the Caucuses, the principle beneficiaries were the revitalized European market-driven empire-builders and the newly emerging market empire builders."

The Supreme International Crime
A quote...."A recent study conducted by U.S. military focus groups last December provided very revealing information regarding the beliefs and values of the Iraqi people. As reported in the Washington Post, the study discovered that, "Iraqis of all sectarian and ethnic groups believe that the U.S. military invasion is the primary root of the violent differences among them, and see the departure of [United States] 'occupying forces' as the key to national reconciliation."

The Iraqi Family: Another Neglected Casualty of War
A quote...."I recently spoke with two well known activists who have for years toiled for the freedom of the Iraqi people; Kathy Kelly, co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence and Hussein Al-Alak, an Iraqi writer and activist with the Iraq Solidarity Campaign in the United Kingdom. -- Kelly and Al-Alak tackled how the war and sanctions have impacted the family unit, and in particular women and children."

Cheney's and Maliki's new war in Iraq - Tuesday round-up - 5 articles - [ Day 36 ]

Drone attacks hit high in Iraq
A quote....posted 04-29-08 -- "WASHINGTON — U.S. commanders in Iraq have ordered an unprecedented number of airstrikes by unmanned airplanes in April to kill insurgents in urban combat and to limit their ability to launch rockets at American forces, military records show."

US escalates siege in Baghdad’s Sadr City
A quote...."30 April 2008 -- US forces continued their siege against Baghdad’s Sadr City neighborhood on Tuesday, leaving dozens dead. The US military said a four-hour firefight broke out around 9:30 a.m. between US forces and militiamen as a US soldier injured by small-arms fire was being evacuated."

37 die in Iraq clashes
A quote....posted 04-29-08 -- "BAGHDAD: More than 37 people were killed in Baghdad's Shi'ite militia bastion of Sadr City yesterday, as gunmen clashed with US soldiers under cover of a severe sandstorm. Several rockets or mortar rounds also struck the Iraqi capital's heavily fortified government compound, as militants took advantage of the absence of US air cover during the storm, witnesses said."

Sunni parliamentarian: "Sadr City attacks are killing mostly unarmed civilians" (UPDATED)
A quote...."April 29, 2008 -- In this photo 2 year old Ali Hussein is seen being pulled from the rubble of his family’s home in Sadr City Tuesday, April 29, 2008. Ali’s home was one of four destroyed by U.S. missiles. Ali died in hospital a few hours."

Militiamen ambush drives back US patrol in Sadr City
A quote...."Apr 29, 2008 16:20 EST -- Dozens of fighters ambushed a U.S. patrol in Baghdad's main Shiite militia stronghold Tuesday, firing rocket-propelled grenades and machine gun bursts as the American push into Sadr City increasingly faces pockets of close urban combat. -- U.S. forces struck back with 200-pound guided rockets that devastated at least three buildings in the densely packed district that serves as the Baghdad base for the powerful Mahdi Army militia." - bold by website editor.

No doubt most "Americans" (a.k.a. Neo-Romans) would feel that the US military is being kind to the Iraqis by not using the usual 500 pound or 1000 pound bombs and as a result, instead of leveling whole city blocks as they did in Fallujah, they're just leveling whole buildings.

This website editor has seen a few articles posted recently by our illustrious mass-media which gave surprisingly large figures of up to forty five "insurgents" killed in a single day in Sadr City.  These articles are not posted on this website for a very good reason....woman, children and little babies don't count as "insurgents", even if it was your nation who bombed and killed them, at least not to those who are civilized....not to mention truthful.

Massive Propaganda Laundry at the Wall Street Journal...
Missed this one - mpg - A quote...."April 23, 2008 -- This may or may not be related to why the Wall Street Journal's top editor, Marcus Brauchli, quit yesterday, but it sure looks to be connected. The "this" that I am referring to is the propaganda piece published in the WSJ - now owned by propaganda magnate, R. Murdoch -  today on what went down in Syria last year:"

Brains, not brawn, in Afghanistan
A quote...." The audacious attack in Kabul on Sunday on Afghan President Hamid Karzai and other dignitaries is another salvo in the Taliban's new phase of targeted missions, rather than direct confrontation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's war machine. In return, NATO, as evidenced by two important recent successes against the insurgency, is becoming smarter, rather than relying on "smart" bombs. -- *Syed Saleem Shahzad*

Afghanistan's insurgency spreading north - link posted at BuzzFlash
A quote...."The insurgency in Afghanistan has not been "contained," Director of National Intelligence Michael McConnell testified before a Senate subcommittee in February. "It's been sustained in the south, it's grown a bit in the east, and what we've seen are elements of it spread to the west and the north."

Iran steps into enemy's territory
A quote...."Too bad for the US, which now places the lion's share of the blame for its quagmire in Iraq on Iran's "destructive influence", two key US allies in the sub-continent, India and Pakistan, are now poised to deepen their economic, political, cultural and even geostrategic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, irrespective of Tehran's defiance of United Nations Security Council resolutions calling for a halt in Iran's uranium-enrichment activities." -- Also posted at ICH

Iran holds key to India's energy insecurity
A quote...."In the rapidly intensifying international energy game, Iran holds a master key to the most staggering roadblock to India's economic growth - energy insecurity. With the issue of energy cooperation expected to dominate talks on Tuesday between visiting Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad and his hosts in New Delhi, a new chapter in India-Iran relations is on the horizon that will likely bring the two countries closer together on a long-term basis."

Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline is on
Video - A quote...."Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has met with Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Reza Gillani to discuss the construction of a gas pipeline from Iran to India. The Real News Analyst Pepe Escobar calls this "one of the most important energy developments of 2008," because it shows that Asian countries that have good relations with the US, such as India and Pakistan, are willing to do business with Iran, despite Washington's attempts to isolate the country."

Bomb Bomb Iran by Summer's End?
War Alert - A quote...."When Senator John McCain serenaded reporters last April with his "Bomb Bomb Iran," I had to wonder. Was this a taste of his aging flyboy humor? Or was he telling us what to expect should he ever become president? We may never find out. If Vice President Dick Cheney has his way, he will beat McCain to the punch, possibly as soon as late May, after President George W. Bush returns from celebrating the 60th anniversary of Israel's creation."

Lebanese army: 12 IAF jets fly over Beirut, Lebanese areas
A quote...."BEIRUT, Lebanon - The Lebanese army said Monday that Israel Air Force warplanes have violated their airspace by flying missions over Beirut and elsewhere in the country. -- The Lebanese army said in a statement that "12 enemy Israeli warplanes violated Lebanese airspace before noon Monday, four flew over the Mediterranean off the coastal city of Byblos in the north and headed toward the eastern province of Hermel."

Almost two years after war, displaced residents of Beirut's southern suburbs are still caught in the middle
A quote...."BEIRUT: When widow Salam Hassoun and her three children left their home in Beirut's southern suburbs on the third day of the summer 2006 war with Israel, she did not know it would be for the last time. Israeli bombs displaced over 1 million Lebanese from across the country, but it was the Hizbullah-controlled southern suburbs, home to an estimated 850,000 people, that suffered the heaviest bombardment - some 942 air strikes during the 34-day war, according to figures from the Lebanese Army."

Israel to put off release of Lebanese detainee
A quote..."Hizbullah had previously pressured Israel to include Nisr in prisoner exchanges orchestrated between the resistance and the Israeli government, the last of which occurred in 2007, but the request was denied by Israel as it argued that Nisr was an Israeli citizen."

Africa Looks East
A quote...."Look East My son. Look East.” Those were the sage words of Kenyan journalist, Wanjohi Kabukuru, as he assayed the results of his President’s visit to Beijing, in just the latest journey from the continent – Africa – most ravaged by the savagery of imperialism and, ironically, where the crisis of US imperialism has become most evident. Of late there has been a growing hysteria in Washington that China is stealing a march on US imperialism, providing an alternative which means that Africa is not bound to bend the knee when their leaders cross the Atlantic." -- "Africa looks East"...it's sure better than looking West, which is sort'a like looking at Cheney, when you're right next to him....and he's got a shot gun in his hands. - mpg

Russia's richest man sees Putin in charge to 2020
A quote...."MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's richest man, Oleg Deripaska, has said he is convinced Vladimir Putin will remain fully in charge of Russia until 2020, even though he is stepping down as president on May 7. -- The media-shy business mogul, with interests stretching from metals and oil to airports and cement, also said that the West should stop fearing Russia."  --  The Russians have their oligarchs just like the US does, they're just a hell of a lot more honest about it. - mpg

Mexico up in arms over privatization oil plans
Video - A quote...."Thousands of Mexicans took to the streets of Mexico City on Sunday to protest an oil reform bill they say would lead to the privatization of the country's state-run oil company. Led by opposition lawmaker Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the demonstrators expressed their displeasure with plans to look for private capital to help fund the expansion of Pemex, Mexico's national oil company."

CFR: The African Union
A quote...."The African Union (AU), formed in 2002 from the vestiges of the Organization for African Unity (OAU), aims to protect the security of the continent, rather than the sovereignty of individual states." -- Better them than Africom. - mpg

Messiahs Just Aren't What They Used to Be
A quote...."Once upon a time (I do like that phrase), a genuinely revolutionary messiah challenged every aspect of the beliefs and practices of the ruling elites of his time, even when that challenge ensured his own death. Alas. In 21st century America, many of those in our intellectual class (I use the words "intellectual" and "class" with a degree of carelessness meriting severe and cruel punishment) enthusiastically make themselves into laughingstocks by wildly applauding the cheapest, emptiest, most obviously manipulative of charlatans."

Halliburton Bribe Case Haunts Cheney
A quote...."Dick Cheney’s tenure at Halliburton ended eight years ago, but a federal investigation of alleged bribes from a company subsidiary to Nigerian officials lingers from the Cheney era, raising questions about what the Vice President knew or should have known." -- To be honest, if Cheney can openly and blatantly steer no bid contracts through the DOD's procurement process while tens of thousands of US soldiers are being injured or killed in Iraq without suffering any consequences, it's doubtful that he's going to be placed in any legal jeopardy by this investigation.  Of course stranger things have happened. We can all hope for the best. - mpg

Troops stranded by airline bankruptcy
A quote...."WASHINGTON — The abrupt collapse of ATA Airlines has left an untold number of U.S. soldiers, sailors and Marines stuck in Iraqi and Afghan airports while they await a ride home. Some face travel delays of up to a week, military officials acknowledge."

MI5 accused of colluding in torture of terrorist suspects
A quote...."Officers of the Security Service, MI5, are being accused of "outsourcing" the torture of British citizens to a notorious Pakistani intelligence agency in an attempt to obtain information about terrorist plots and to secure convictions against al-Qaida suspects."

Peace protesters deflate NZ spy base dome
A quote...."WELLINGTON (Reuters) - Peace activists attacked and deflated a large inflatable globe housing a satellite dish at a top secret New Zealand spy base on Wednesday in protest at United States military actions."

Don Siegelman hit with travel restrictions...
Some quotes...."Siegelman tells The Associated Press that he was informed by his probation officer Tuesday afternoon that he was being classified as a special offender for travel purposes. The classification means he must get approval from the judge overseeing his case and from the district where he seeks to travel." -- "Just in time to deny Siegelman the right to travel to Washington for his Congressional testimony?  Or is it simply that Karl Rove has thrown a temper tantrum and called in the Stasi to make Siegelman fall out of circulation? What country is this?"

Banned In America - French Documentary Film Pulled from YouTube and Google
A quote...."The two hour long documentary that aired on French television was never going to be aired in America. While Rush Limbaugh has enough freedom to call for riots in Denver, critics of American petrochemical companies can't hear a word about the privitization of the food supply on our public air waves. On March 7, 2008, Greenpeace International summarized the film and global reaction on their website."

Dave Barry Explains the Tax Rebate
A quote...."The tax rebate of 2008, which is scheduled to begin this week when the first checks go into the mail, is the latest example of American mercantilism in action. I did my best to explain American mercantilism in the April 26 issue of Gary North's Reality Check. There, I explained modern Keynesian economics as the American version of mercantilism."

A Short Numismatic History of the United States
A quote...."Governments are inveterate despoilers of the freedom, wealth, and lives of their citizens. As consolation, the citizens usually receive little more than lofty words and pretentious sentiments from the political leaders in charge of the looting, murder, and enslavement. Less commonly, governments produce something concrete, such as a marble palace for the ruler or an alabaster temple for the commemoration of some supposedly noble public goal."

Bank bail-outs to be kept secret
Special Note - Financial Alert - A quote...."The Bank of England has imposed a permanent news blackout on its £50bn-plus plan to ease the credit crunch. -  Ferocious and unprecedented secrecy means taxpayers will never know the names of the banks that have been supported through the special liquidity scheme, which was unveiled by Bank Governor Mervyn King last week."

Bank For International Settlements: High Risk Of U.S. stagflation
A quote...."BASEL, Switzerland, April 29 (Reuters) - Stagflation is an increasingly plausible prospect in the United States and weak economic growth could last well into 2009, if not longer, the head of the Bank for International Settlements says."

Foreclosures jump for seventh straight quarter

Fastened to a Dying Animal
Must Read - A quote...."Here in this crumbling empire once known as the American Republic, here in a nation that, at present, for all practical purposes, only produces Cheetos and killer drones, whose architecture is being winnowed down to thriving rural meth houses and foreclosed upon suburban mchouses, whose corrupt corporate culture has bequeathed upon our suffering planet dying oceans and the hyper-caffeinated tsunami of Red Bull Capitalism -- the essential question confronts us -- how does one retain (not retail) one's humanity amid the catastrophic machinery and inane accouterment of our age?" -- Also posted at ConsortiumNews

War Propaganda: Disneyland goes to war-torn Iraq
Special Note - Related article - A quote...."Disneyland  goes to war-torn Iraq, with a multi-million dollar entertainment complex, to be built on a 50 acre lot adjacent to the Green Zone. -- The American-style amusement park will feature a skateboard park, rides, a concert theatre and a museum. -- The occupation forces are of the opinion that Baghdad is "lacking in entertainment". General David Petraeus, is said to be a “big supporter” of bringing Disneyland to Baghdad."

When Will They Ever Learn?
Must Read - A quote...."When George W. Bush was “elected” the second time a British journal queried: “How can 69 million people be so dumb?” How indeed. I noted Bush’s election for a second term as somehow comparable to 410A.D., the traditional date given by historians for the fall of Rome. Mired in a war that has netted the Bush-fraternity profiteers billions of dollars; that has cost thousands of American and God knows how many hundreds of thousands of Iraqi lives; sunk in an economy that has made the exorbitantly rich outlandishly richer while Americans slavishly multi-task to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table while wildly usurious interest mounts up on their debts; spurned, mistrusted and ridiculed by the people of just about every nation of the world as a population that’s lost its senses--- what does something approaching one- half of Americans do? Persist in the folly"

Bush's brutal war stirs memories of Vietnam
A quote...."When the news came that Daniel Ellsberg led a rally in Concord, New Hampshire, to help impeach President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, I happened to be looking at the entries for the year 1967 in an almanac. -- That year, the United States kept expanding its forces in Vietnam amid mounting protests worldwide, and I was marveling how it was that it took so many more years before that lopsided, prolonged war America waged in a remote land ended."

At the court of the caliph in Washington
A quote...."Middle East experts argue that history repeats itself in Iraq. In fact, the ongoing blood bath in Iraq resembles, although on a larger scale, the scene in 680 AD when the Caliph in Damascus, Yazid, ordered the slaughter of members of the Prophet Mohamed’s family, including his immediate grandson, Hussein, in Karbala. The tragedy in Karbala has been forever engraved in the collective mind of Iraqis and has become a symbol uniting the masses against tyranny, political deception, corruption and brutality."

Bush's Conspiracy to Create an American Police State:
Part VII, The Government Denies 'Due Process of Law'
Part VI, The government places itself above the law
Must Read - A quote from Part VI...."Bush's ascent to dictatorship began with a violent attack upon vote recounters in Florida. It was given an imprimatur of legitimacy with the disingenuous 5-4 decision of a conservative SCOTUS. A felonious, physical attack had the effect of stopping the court ordered recount of votes, a count that would have given the White House to Al Gore. Those events and the consolidation of near absolute power since are simply the most visible characteristics of a stunning coup d'etat consolidated quickly in the aftermath of what many believe to have been a false flag attack upon the US: 911!"

The Torture Election
Related article - A quote...."As the presidential horse race grows more frenzied and absurd -- Flag pins!  Bowling! Obliteration!-- it is important to keep in mind what the election is really about: torture. -- Specifically, the use of torture as an openly admitted, formally recognized instrument of national policy, approved at the highest level of government. The Bush Administration has now dropped all pretense that it is not engaging in interrogation techniques and incarceration practices long recognized by both international and U.S. law as blatantly criminal."

Rearming the world
Special Note - A quote...."Much of this new arms spending is concentrated among the world's biggest consumers of resources, which are trying to protect their access to energy, and the biggest producers of resources, which are taking advantage of their new wealth to build up their defenses at a rate that would have been unthinkable for a developing country until recently." - bold by website editor -- Gee...one wonders why so many oil producing countries are "building up their defenses"?  Could it be because of that deranged "psycho-country" running around the world murdering millions of innocent people for their oil and gas while claiming all the while it's trying to bring them "freedom and democracy"?  (Website editor's hint, the "psycho-country" is NOT Russia, China, India, Iran or Brazil) - mpg

The U.S. and China are over a barrel
Related article - A quote...."Among the many reasons given for the recent surge in gas prices is China's soaring demand for petroleum. Because the Chinese are running around the world buying up every available barrel of oil, the argument goes, we Americans have to pay that much more to outbid them for the leftover pools of crude. And the fact that the Chinese yuan has been growing stronger while the American dollar is shrinking in value has only exacerbated the problem." -- Also posted at CommonDreams

U.S. in the Arab World: A golden age?
Related article - A quote...."Assume for a moment that Haroldo Lima, the head of Brazil's National Petroleum Agency, is right in his claim that a new offshore oilfield of some 33 billion barrels has been found under the Atlantic Ocean near Rio de Janeiro. Called the Carioca field, it would be the world's third largest. It follows the discovery last year of the 8 billion barrel Tupi field, also offshore, and in February the finding of a massive new gasfield called Jupiter."

House Democrats work on huge Iraq money bill
A quote...."House Democratic leaders are putting together the largest Iraq war spending bill yet, a measure that is expected to fund the war through the end of the Bush presidency and for nearly six months into the next president's term. -- The bill, which could be unveiled as early as this week, signals that Democrats are resigned to the fact they can't change course in Iraq in the final months of President Bush's term. Instead, the party is pinning its hopes of ending the war on winning the White House in November." -bold/underline by website editor -- Sure they are.  DemoRepubs lied when they hinted they would put a stop to this war, they're just like the RepubDemos.  This nation now gets to look forward to many more years of endless warfare for as far as the eye can see.  Exactly as anticipated and predicted by the DPG and PNAC protocols,  protocols you won't see discussed by our mass media or the presidential candidates. - mpg -- Also posted at CommonDreams

Military Propaganda Pushed Me Off TV
Must Read - A quote...."In the fall of 2002, week after week, I argued vigorously against invading Iraq in debates televised on MSNBC. I used every possible argument that might sway mainstream viewers — no real threat, cost, instability. But as the war neared, my debates were terminated. -- In my 2006 book Cable News Confidential, I explained why I lost my airtime: -- There was no room for me after MSNBC launched Countdown: Iraq — a daily one-hour show that seemed more keen on glamorizing a potential war than scrutinizing or debating it. Countdown: Iraq featured retired colonels and generals, sometimes resembling boys with war toys as they used props, maps and glitzy graphics to spin invasion scenarios. They reminded me of pumped-up ex-football players doing pre-game analysis and diagramming plays. It was excruciating to be sidelined at MSNBC, watching so many non-debates in which myth and misinformation were served up unchallenged."

“Message Force Multipliers” and the Handmaidens of Hell
A quote...."Now that the administration has been exposed for what was already suspected on some level, that it enlisted no less than 75 malleable ex-military officers (who happened to be intercessors for the defense industry) to serve as agents, or as they were called by the Pentagon, “message force multipliers” to spin the war in Iraq, maybe the duped mainstream news media will be properly chastened and start covering Iraq properly. -- Yeah right. Considering that the media, once caught red-handed, never gets red-faced, it proceeds pretty much like nothing happened, the truth be damned."

The Pentagon's Puppets
A quote...."The Bush administration has covertly tried to influence public opinion in its favor throughout the Iraq war, planting stories in Iraqi newspapers and disseminating misleading polls. Last week, The New York Times reported that the Pentagon has been using more than 75 "military analysts" as "puppets," revealing one of the most extensive attempts at domestic propaganda in this war."

Pentagon stops planting 'analysts' to provide talking points
A quote...."The Pentagon has stopped feeding its talking points directly to retired generals and officers who then recited the military's arguments to major television networks as their own ostensibly "independent" analysis. -- In a blockbuster expose this month, the New York Times revealed the Pentagon's "hidden hand" behind the military talking heads who helped it sell the Iraq war to the American people. Since the story appeared eight days ago it has been all-but-ignored by the major television networks who served as conduits for the Pentagon's message men."

Is War With Iran Imminent? - This time, it's more than a rumor…
War Warning - A quote...."The shooting has already started in the Persian Gulf – and chances are we'll be at war with Iran before President Bush's term is up. An American ship under contract with the U.S. Navy – the Western Venture – claims it was in international waters when Iranian speedboats approached and failed to answer radio calls. Shots were fired on the American side. Iran denies the whole thing. Yet you'll recall that in the last incident, involving the capture of British sailors, the story about being in international waters was the same – except, it turns out, they weren't in international waters, but in disputed waters, just as we speculated in this space. There's no reason to expect anything different this time. Clearly, the U.S. and Britain are trying to trigger a new conflict with the most brazen provocations, and they don't really care how it happens – only that it does."

Molten STEEL Flowed Under Ground Zero for Months After 9/11

Ex-Prosecutor Tells of Push by Pentagon on Detainees
Special Note - A quote...."GUANTÁNAMO BAY, Cuba — The former chief prosecutor here took the witness stand on Monday on behalf of a detainee and testified that top Pentagon officials had pressured him in deciding which cases to prosecute and what evidence to use. -- The prosecutor, Col. Morris D. Davis of the Air Force, testified that Pentagon officials had interfered with his work for political reasons and told him that charges against well-known detainees “could have real strategic political value” and that there could be no acquittals." - underline by website editor -- Any convictions of these detainees at this point will be invalid, illegal and utterly moot.  The US cannot convict these prisoners in what is now "officially acknowledged" to be a show trial, using fraudulently obtained and totally unsupported testimony extracted under torture in violation of international law, where the defendants received little or no access to consul, and expect to have these convictions honored anywhere else in the rest of the civilized world. And those US military personnel who participated and continue to participate in this travesty of justice should realize they could be held personally liable for their actions.

Reverend Wright Delivers the Knockout Punch
A quote...."28/04/08 "ICH" -- - Reverend Jeremiah Wright appeared on PBS Bill Moyers Journal on Friday night and delivered a knockout punch to the bully-boys in the corporate media. It was an impressive performance that left the political assassins over at FOX News choking on their sausage-rolls. Wright showed that he is neither a fanatic nor an “America hater”; just an extremely well-read and principled man with an unshakable commitment to justice. Wright has also paid his dues; he's an ex-Marine who served in Vietnam when most of his critics were either hiding behind their student deferments or languishing in the "Champagne Unit" of the Texas National Guard. He's earned the right to say whatever he chooses. " -- Also posted at CounterPunch

When Right And Left Agree, Something Is Happening!
A quote...."The political situation in the United States is different at this particular time than in any other time that I have witnessed in my 57 years on this planet. This is the only time in my life that I can ever remember when the right and the left agree more with each other than the so-called “centrists’” of the GOP and the Democratic Party. Those that lean left, like myself, are afraid of losing their civil liberties, afraid of the corporate control of the mainstream media, afraid of the government’s surveillance of our personal activities, afraid of violations of the second amendment when it comes to gun ownership and are thoroughly disgusted with the governments clampdown on our 1st Amendment rights on free speech. When we see protestors tasered and sprayed with tear gas, hit by rubber bullets and clubbed, as in what happened at the G8 meetings in Washington, something is definitely wrong in this republic."

Clouds Over Europe

That is the case, notably, in Ireland, Germany, Spain, Italy and, of course, France. -- That the historically elevated level of the euro against the dollar is beginning to pose problems, even to German exporters, is obvious. Nonetheless, it's not the currency that is the source of all evils: Great Britain's economic problems prove that."

U.S. Home Vacancies Rise to Record on Foreclosures (Update3)

The vacancy rate, the share of homes empty and for sale, rose to 2.9 percent, the highest in a series that goes back to 1956. About 2.3 million empty homes were for sale, compared with 2.2 million a year earlier, the report said."

Critical Reaction: The Empire Strikes Back in Kabul?
Special Note - A quote...."On Friday, Afghan President Hamid Karzai gave an interview to Carlotta Gall of the New York Times, in which he blasted American and British conduct of the war in his country. Karzai said the Anglo-American powers should stop their incessant killing of civilians and quit conducting their "War on Terror" against Afghan villagers. Perhaps most remarkably, he called on the Western forces to stop targeting Taliban members and suspected sympathizers. The interview represented the harshest criticism he has ever levelled against the Western powers. -- The very next day, in an amazing coincidence, Karzai was the target of a spectacular assassination attempt, on national television, with mortar fire and bullets raking a review stand at a military parade in the center of Kabul. One man was killed, several were wounded -- but Karzai escaped unhurt, as did the American ambassador, the New York Times reports."

9/11 Contradictions: When Did Cheney Enter the Underground Bunker?

Nothing New
Must Read - A quote...." Truly, sometimes I think there is nothing new on the face of the earth. Here's a quotation cited by Mark Twain around the turn of the 19th century. Read it and see if you don't recognize it from today's political discourse: -- "Even if the war be wrong we are in it and must fight it out: we cannot retire from it without dishonor." -- That war was in the Philippines. Perhaps you remember it from your history books. We "liberated" the country from the clutch of Spanish colonialism, but then decided we would just replace the Spanish rather than grant the people independence. They resisted, and we fought a second war in the islands against Filipino patriots."

It Didn’t Start With Bush
Must Read - A quote...."George W. Bush should be the poster boy for Hayek’s dictum of Why the Worst Get On Top; in other words, he is the worst. His statements are the worst; virtually everything that comes out of his mouth is either stupid, illiterate, ill informed, false and/or a lie (e.g.; "Major combat operations have ended," "I’m the decider."). His administration is the worst, responsible for putting the US in its worst condition in terms of the economy, military readiness, international standing, education, and medical care. From the 2000 election to the present, Bush and his administration have consistently and successfully worked to undermine the remains of the constitutional republic that was the United States."

An Election Without Meaning
A quote...."Will November 2008 bring a meaningful change to America? Will getting rid of George W. Bush and Richard Cheney without impeachment or indictment really make a difference? Will a 600 billion dollar war/defense budget be cut in half and used for desperately needed domestic spending? Will the ninety-three billion dollars profits in the private health insurance companies¬¬—those parasitic intermediates between you and your doctor—be used instead for full health care coverage for all? Will Habeas Corpus and Posse Comitatus be restored to the people? Will torture stop and the US withdraw from Iraq immediately? Will all students in public universities be able to enroll for free? Will the US national security agencies stop mass spying on our personal communications? Will the neo-conservative agenda of total military domination of the world be reversed? -- The answer to these questions in the context of the current billion dollar presidential campaign is an absolute no. Instead we have a campaign of personalities and platitudes."

Why the US has really gone broke

Islamic Finance
A quote...."26/04/08 "ICH" -- -- Islamic finance has become the fastest-growing, most dynamic sector of global finance. Every Western-style financial product has its sharia, i.e. Islamic law, compliant instrument: microfinance, mortgages, oil and gas exploration, bridge building, even sponsorship of sporting events. Islamic finance is innovative, flexible, and potentially very profitable. “Operating in 70 countries with about $500bn in assets, it is poised to expand geometrically.” With more than one billion Muslims eager to support it, analysts project that this system will soon manage approximately 4 percent of the world economy, equivalent to $1 trillion in assets. Such figures explain the eagerness of Western banks to tap into sharia financial services. Citigroup, along with many other Western banking retailers, have opened Islamic branches in Muslim countries." -- This is all very nice but if current Muslim leaders hadn't allowed themselves to be bought by the US's elites and played off against each other, all of the Middle East would have already come together as the Muslim Middle Eastern Economic Union more than thirty years ago.  Think of all the lost opportunities and wasted lives because many of these "leaders" choose to do "business" with the US's elites. -- It's always been said you get what you paid for. - mpg

[Dr. Dahlia S.Wasfi] - Iraqis Dying for Us to Leave
A quote...."As I continue to speak around the U.S. calling for the immediate, unconditional withdrawal of American forces from Iraq and Afghanistan, the response shaped by the media is:  “we want to bring the troops home, but we’re afraid of what might happen when we leave.”  My typical reply is sarcastic:  “Like we have such a good thing going [in Iraq and Afghanistan] now, we don’t want to mess it up.”  It simply does not make sense to predict that while Iraqis were better off before American and British soldiers illegally invaded (free healthcare, free education, better electricity and water services, and most importantly, the security of law and order), they will be worse off when the military occupation ends.  Considering four of the major consequences of foreign troop withdrawal, it is clear that the first step in the right direction—for Iraq, America, and the rest of the world—is to bring the troops home." -- For more from Dr. Wasfi see below....

Iraq's Dance: Maliki, Sadr and Sunnis

Maliki has been saying this for months, though no tangible progress toward reseating members of the National Accordance Front in Iraq's ministries has emerged. Pentagon Propaganda & Antiwar Analysts (Updated)
A quote...."The Sunday Times' article detailing the massive, secret coordinated campaign by the Pentagon and all the leading television news channels to sell and defend the administration's Iraq policy is a critical piece of investigative journalism. The Man Who Stuck Us With Bush
A quote...."If historians are honest, history will record that it was Antonin Scalia who finished off the American republic by sticking us with George W. Bush, a ne'er do well who aspired to dictatorship and with Scalia's help, got one! Scalia now sweats his legacy in an unseemly manner in public. Historians will say of his bone headed efforts to bully other justices into complicity was not not based in anyway on the Constitution, law or precedent. Scalia is what happens when justices give up law for partisan politics. Scalia's scholarly retort: 'get over it'."

Gouged Out: The Consumer and the Gas Station Operator
A quote...."Thursday, 24 April 2004, CNN Money ran an interesting article called Gouging myth out of gas1 that further explained how the myth that gas stations participate in "price gouging" is unlikely, at best -- and it casts an eye toward the primary culprit through the use of some very interesting facts and figures."

Euthanize Wall Street to save the economy
A quote...."The “bail out” of Bear Stearns five weeks ago did nothing to solve the underlying causes of the unfolding financial meltdown, so another major crisis is unavoidable. The “bail out” of Bear Stearns has merely bought more time for the big players on Wall Street to try and drag this out past the November election, because what they fear above all else is the rise of a progressive political movement strong enough to pry loose their grasp on the credit mechanism -- the financial system -- of our economy."

Consumers, companies flash recession warnings
Some quotes...."NEW YORK (Reuters) - The warning signs of a U.S. recession flashed again on Friday as consumer sentiment sank to its lowest in 26 years and corporate earnings appeared set for their third consecutive quarter of contraction." -- "The Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers index of confidence for April fell to 62.6 from 69.5 in March, sliding deeper into recessionary territory and coming in worse than economists had expected." -- "With more than half of the companies in the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 .SPX index reporting results, earnings for the first quarter are on pace to fall 14.1 percent from a year before, largely due to weakness in results from the banking and consumer discretionary sectors."

British government commits taxpayers to bailing out the banks
Special Note - A quote...."The government and the Bank of England have been forced to step in to bail out Britain’s banking system, which is on the point of collapse. -- The measures go beyond those taken by the US Federal Reserve or the European Central Bank in offering almost limitless liquid assets, in effect backed by future taxpayers’ funds. They reflect the increasing financial turmoil and threaten to bankrupt the British government itself. -- The Governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King, announced a series of measures of a quite unprecedented scale and scope under a “special liquidity scheme”. The Bank would accept the banks’ AAA rated mortgage and credit card backed securities-which have in fact becoming untradeable and thus worthless—but not those related to the US sub-prime market. These AAAs would be swapped for short dated and highly liquid Treasury bonds for one to three years, at a discounted rate or “haircut”, to use the City’s jargon."

Double Whammy for Australian borrowers
A quote...."AUSTRALIAN home borrowers are doing it tougher than their British and US counterparts as the global credit crunch and surging domestic inflation push rates even higher. - National Australia Bank and ANZ are the latest of the major lenders to lift their standard variable rates by 10 basis points each, with NAB choosing yesterday to do it. - ANZ has the highest of the variable rates, along with St George Bank, at 9.47 per cent. - NAB is at 9.46 per cent while Westpac is at the bottom of the ladder at 9.37 per cent. It comes as this week's high inflation numbers in Australia dampened hopes for an official rate cut, while the banks continued to lift rates, irrespective of the Reserve Bank leaving the cash rate unchanged at 7.25 per cent."

Shattering the War Consensus
Must Read - A quote...."Why, for God’s sake, does nothing change? The war goes on, the money flows, the blood flows, the lies stay exactly the same. Have you noticed? Have you ever wondered, with a stab of transcendent confusion, why a self-correcting rationality hasn’t kicked in by now, why a saner awareness hasn’t made itself evident in the macro-affairs of the nation by now?"

TV’s Response to Pentagon Propaganda? Never Happened
A quote...."Last week, it was a mudslinging debate hosted by ABC. This week, it’s revelations of pro-war propaganda on nearly every major television news outlet. truth about the fast sell on the Iraq war just hit a new low. And today, in the ensuing days, our loyal Bush lapdog news outlets are either dismissing the damning revelation or pretending it never happened: -- Sunday’s New York Times’ article exposing a secret Bush administration campaign to infiltrate the media with pro-Iraq war “analysts” is enraging and is likely illegal. Trillions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of casualties later, we learn that the drum beat to war was led by a choir lip-synching the Pentagon’s talking points."

Military "Analysts," the Media, and the Selling of Bush's Wars
A quote...."The Bush administration has made a mess of many things, from the Iraq war to Katrina. Yet there is one area in which Bush and his people have met with, at least, limited success - namely the manipulation of public opinion, especially when it comes to the "war on terror."  --  Actually Bush and his Neocon cronies have met with outstanding success regarding "the manipulation of public opinion" and to drive the point home this administration has NOT made a "mess of many things, from the Iraq war to Katrina" they have been outstanding successes also for Bush's "base" the wealthiest one percent of this nation's population who have made fortunes off of what have been debacles for the rest of the "American" public.  So for those who haven't got it yet, let this humble website editor clue you in....NINTY NINE PERCENT OF THIS NATION'S POPULATION DOES NOT COUNT!!  They are chattel, cattle, meat, peons, peasants, cannon fodder, sheep or whatever term one would care to use to describe the justifiable contempt and the actual predatory financial relationship our wealthy elites have toward those they rule.  Welcome to the New Roman Empire.- mpg

5 US Troops Killed; Turkey Bombs N. Iraq; Iran Backs al-Maliki against Mahdi Army
A quote...."It is precisely the closeness of the al-Maliki government and its primary current pillar, ISCI, to Iran that has made Sunni Arab countries such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia skittish about allowing it into the Arab League system as a full diplomatic partner. The Sunni Arab states largely do not have embassies in Baghdad, and Iraqi Shiites accuse them or their populations of surreptitiously helping Iraqi Sunni Arab guerrillas." -- *Juan Cole*

Latin America: the attack on democracy
A quote...." 24/04/08 "ICH" -- -- Beyond the sound and fury of its conquest of Iraq and campaign against Iran, the world's dominant power is waging a largely unreported war on another continent - Latin America. Using proxies, Washington aims to restore and reinforce the political control of a privileged group calling itself middle-class, to shift the responsibility for massacres and drug trafficking away from the psychotic regime in Colombia and its mafiosi, and to extinguish hopes raised among Latin America's impoverished majority by the reform governments of Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia." -- Also posted at Global Research.

Impeachment Now Or Apocalypse Later?
A quote...."The political noose seems to be tightening on the key members of the remaining miscreants down in the White House bunker -- mainly Bush, Cheney, Rice, Addington and Mukasey. (Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, Gonzales, Powell and Tenet were pushed out the door earlier.) But will the Democrats, having been provided with smoking gun-type evidence of these officials' high crimes and misdemeanors, take the next logical step to end this continuing nightmare of law-breaking at the highest levels? Consider:"

Aggressive action is needed to resurrect 4th Amendment rights
A quote...."April 23, 2008 – Are rights really rights if any or all branches of government can grant themselves, or each other, exceptions to the rights so that each or all may justify violating the rights of the people?  Can rights be outweighed in balancing tests?  Does the Bill of Rights allow for exceptions to rights such as “unless outweighed by a compelling state interest”?"

Making a 'Killing' on the 'War on Terror'
A quote...."Nearly seven years after Sept. 11, 2001, what accounts for the vast discrepancy between the terrorist threat facing America and the scale of our response? -- Why, absent any evidence of a serious domestic terror threat, is the War on Terror so enormous, so all-encompassing, and still expanding? -- The fundamental answer is that al-Qaeda’s most important accomplishment was not to hijack our planes, but to hijack our political system."

Memo to Bernanke: Enough with the rate cuts, already!
Special Note - A quote...."Last week's stock market blowout added more than 4 per cent to the Dow Jones Industrials, but it had no affect on Libor rates. Libor rose steadily from Tuesday through Friday signaling more troubles in the banking system. -- Libor, which means London Interbank-Offered Rate, is the rate that banks charge each other for loans. It has a dramatic effect on nearly every area of investment. When the rate soars, as it did last week, it means that the banks are either too weak financially to lend to each other or too worried about the ability of the other bank to repay them. Either way, it puts a crimp in lending."

New home sales plunge to lowest level in 16 1/2 years
A quote...."WASHINGTON (AP) - Sales of new homes plunged in March to the lowest level in 16 1/2 years as housing slumped further at the start of the spring sales season. -- The median price of a new home in March, compared with a year ago, fell by the largest amount in nearly four decades."

A quote...."NEW YORK (Reuters) - Dealers' demand to borrow cash from the Federal Reserve eased in the latest week, but is still substantial, indicating only a minor reprieve from credit market strains. -- Banks still are wary of lending to each other, as persistently elevated inter-bank borrowing costs show. With the commercial paper market -- another cornerstone of short term lending -- also continuing to shrink, U.S. financial institutions are still heavily reliant on the central bank as an alternative source of temporary cash."

Why Does the Bush Regime Want to Rule Iraq?
Must Read - A quote...." 23/04/08 "ICH"  -- -- The Bush regime has quagmired America into a sixth year of war in Afghanistan and Iraq with no end in sight. The cost of these wars of aggression is horrendous. Official U.S. combat casualties stand at 4,538 dead. Officially, 29,780 U.S. troops have been wounded in Iraq. -- On April 17, 2008, AP News reported that a new study released by the RAND Corporation concludes that "some 300,000 U.S. troops are suffering from major depression or post-traumatic stress from serving in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and 320,000."

Glorious Fruits of the War for Civilization
A quote...."Annals of Liberation I: "Angry Arab" As'ad AbuKhalil notes the curious Bush-Clinton notions of liberation and freedom in Iraq: Today Hillary said that the US gave Iraq "the precious gift" of freedom. -- Giving foreign troops -- and foreign mercenaries -- the right to operate with complete immunity on your own native soil, arresting anyone they like, going anywhere they want, and conducting military operations against your people without your permission: sounds like a "precious gift" to us!"

Unbelieveable! "al-Qaeda" Dismisses Conspiracy Theories, Defends Israel, Attacks Iran and Hizbollah!
Special Note -- A quote...."Ever since the 9/11 attacks, Sott.net, along with many others commentators (including US government officials), have repeatedly stated that "al-qaeda" is a fabricated enemy. That it is used to justify the Ziocon's military rampage though the Middle East while simultaneously terrorising the folks back home. -- In the past 7 years the world public has repeatedly been treated to bogus missives from "al-Qaeda leaders" that strangely echo the Islamophobic claims of the leaders of the Western world. -- Every time a member of the US or Israeli government expounded on the "Muslim terror threat to freedom and democracy everywhere", soon afterwards "al-Qaeda" obligingly popped up with a new video or statement in which they threatened freedom and democracy."

Tomgram: Steve Fraser, The Two Gilded Ages
A quote...."Think of it as gilding the pain. Last year, hedge fund manager John Paulson of Paulson & Co. hauled in a nifty $3.7 billion. (Yes, you read that right.) Mainly, he did so, according to the Wall Street Journal, "by shorting, or betting against, subprime mortgage securities and collateralized debt obligations." And he wasn't alone. Hedge fund money-maker Philip Falcone of Harbinger Capital Partners raked in a comparatively measly $1.7 billion in 2007, also by shorting subprime mortgages. These are fortunes beyond imagining, made in no time at all by betting on the pure misery of others. Think of them as Las Vegas with a mean streak a mile wide." - Also posted at ICH

The pictures show attractive people learning skills, not killing or getting killed, wounded or psychically scarred. At ball games, announcers use the 7th inning stretch to pay tribute to those serving in the military."

US News Media's Latest Disgrace - posted at Consortium News
A quote..."After prying loose 8,000 pages of Pentagon documents, the New York Times has proven what should have been obvious years ago: the Bush administration manipulated public opinion on the Iraq War, in part, by funneling propaganda through former senior military officers who served as expert analysts on TV news shows."

Propaganda at home
A quote...."ANYONE who has watched the military analysts hired by TV networks has heard rosy assessments of the war in Iraq. The similarities between their judgments and the Pentagon's are not coincidental. As The New York Times demonstrated by suing the Pentagon to obtain 8,000 pages of documents, those analysts were enlisted by the Defense Department in a psychological warfare operation targeting the domestic audience. And, as the newspaper reported Sunday, many of the retired military officers appearing on news shows were using their access to the Pentagon and the airwaves to procure lucrative contracts for some 150 defense contractors, which employed them as consultants, board members, lobbyists, or executives." -- Also posted at CommonDreams

The New Walls of Baghdad
Must Read - A quote...."The new "surge" strategy in Iraq, led by General David Petreaus, has been heavily marketed as an example of the U.S. military's application of the "lessons of history" from previous counterinsurgencies to Iraq, foremost among them the need to win the population over from insurgents through cultivating human relationships, addressing popular grievances and providing security." -- Also posted at CommonDreams

U.S. Soldiers Say Administration Exaggerated Role Of Iraqi Troops In Basra Offensive
A quote...." Earlier this month, the southern Iraqi city of Basra was engulfed in violence as radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr calling for the “downfall of the U.S.-backed government.” -- As Reuters noted, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s crackdown on the militias largely “backfired, exposing the weakness of his army and strengthening his political foes ahead of elections.” Yet the Bush administration and its allies have attempted to portray this violence as a success, demonstrating the capability of the Iraqi army:"

Muqtada's biggest battle already won
A quote..."A new study by the Washington DC-based advocacy organization, Refugees International, reveals that Shi'ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's militant force, Jaish-al-Mahdi, is the largest social welfare dispenser in Iraq. -- It is a tribute to the Mahdi Army's successful adaptation of the model pioneered by Hezbollah in Lebanon. When survival needs of food, water, housing, electricity and protection are in short supply, and the state apparatus is unable or unwilling to come to the rescue of the population, radical non-state actors can exploit the vacuum and step in as provider of last resort."

Iraqi officials say US air strike kills 10 in Baghdad
A quote...."BAGHDAD (AFP) — A US air strike Tuesday killed 10 people in Baghdad, Iraqi officials said, as the American military announced the deaths of five troops and a female suicide bomber slaughtered six Iraqis north of the capital."

Clinton Threatens to ‘Obliterate’ Iran
A quote...."How proud the Clintonistas must be. They have learned how to rival what Hillary once termed the “vast right-wing conspiracy” in the effort to destroy a viable Democratic leader who dares to stand in the way of their ambitions. The tactics used to kneecap Barack Obama are the same as had been turned on Bill Clinton in earlier times, from radical-baiting associates to challenging his resolve in protecting the nation from foreign enemies. Will the CIA Kill or Oust Ecuador’s President?
A quote...."Ecuador’s president Rafael Correa may not be long for this world, both in a political sense and in genuine life-or-death sense. He recently fired his defense minister, army chief of intelligence, and commanders of the army, air force, and joint chiefs. -- Why might those firings cost Correa his job or even his life? Because the reason he fired them was that Ecuador’s intelligence systems were “totally infiltrated and subjugated to the CIA.” As other rulers around the world, including democratically elected ones, have learned the hard way, bucking the CIA is a real no-no that sometimes leads to coups and assassinations."

Colombia’s President Uribe implicated in paramilitary death squad probe

Bush's Gitmo Justice Creates a Legal Black Hole

Abigail Adams wrote to her husband, John: "Every vestige of the King [George] was burnt. This ends royal Authority, a way of living, a way of thinking." -- Abigail didn't anticipate that another King George, presiding over America almost 250 years later, would have so expanded his authority that he could designate persons—including American citizens—as "enemy combatants" to be held in military prisons without due process."

Imminent Arrest of Americans for War Crimes? -- Highly doubtful, but it's a nice thought. - mpg

Although there is no doubt that George Stephanopoulos and Charles Gibson made fools of themselves and their corporate employers in the "worst" debate of the season, the signers failed to place last week's televised travesty in the context of the rapid extinction of any semblance of professional journalism among corporate media. In expressing hope that corporate media will "return to serious journalism" during the general election debates, the letter gives the impression that last week's debacle was an aberration - when, in fact, nonsense and lies posing as "news" has become the norm."
