Financial Collapse will End the Occupation: And it won't be "A time of our choosing" - posted at ICH
Must Read - A quote...." 14/04/08 "ICH   " -- - The US Military has won every battle it has fought in Iraq, but it has lost the war. Wars are won politically, not militarily.  Bush doesn't understand this. He still clings to the belief that a political settlement can be imposed through force. But he is mistaken. The use of overwhelming force has only spread the violence and added to the political instability.  Now Iraq is ungovernable. Was that the objective? Miles of concrete blast-walls snake through Baghdad to separate the warring parties; the country is fragmented into a hundred smaller pieces each ruled by local militia commanders. These are the signs of failure not success. That's why the American people no longer support the occupation. They're just being practical; they know Bush's plan won't work. As Nir Rosen says, “Iraq has become Somalia”."

The End of the World as You Know It…and the Rise of the New Energy World Order
Must Read - A quote...."Oil at $110 a barrel. Gasoline at $3.35 (or more) per gallon. Diesel fuel at $4 per gallon. Independent truckers forced off the road. Home heating oil rising to unconscionable price levels. Jet fuel so expensive that three low-cost airlines stopped flying in the past few weeks. This is just a taste of the latest energy news, signaling a profound change in how all of us, in this country and around the world, are going to live -- trends that, so far as anyone can predict, will only become more pronounced as energy supplies dwindle and the global struggle over their allocation intensifies."

India learns its oil lessons
A quote...."BANGALORE - India's quest for energy security received a boost last week with its oil diplomacy paying off to varying degrees on more than one continent. In South America, India signed a deal allowing it to participate in a joint venture to drill oil and gas in Venezuela, while in Central Asia, the door was pried open for Indian companies to invest in projects in Turkmenistan. In the same period, New Delhi's wooing of Africa's oil-rich nations moved into top gear as it played host to the first India-Africa summit."

Cheney's and Maliki's new war in Iraq - Tuesday round-up - 5 articles - [ Day 22 ]

Watching and waiting: al-Sadr's strategy to defeat the occupation
Must Read - A quote...."On the morning of March 19, on the fifth anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, I stood with a small group of protesters outside U.S. Southern Command Headquarters in Miami. A reporter asked me whether I felt frustrated. -- "The war seems to be endless," she volunteered. -- "No," I told her, "it's not endless. It's definitely going to end. The only question is whether it will end sooner rather than later, and how much more death and destruction our government and armed forces are going to inflict on the people of Iraq in the meantime."

Iraq: The Fight for Control
A quote...."US-backed Iraqi forces launched attacks in Sadr City on Friday, sparking violence that has continued through Tuesday. Since the fighting began, more than 90 people have been killed. -- The offensives made good on Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's promises to increase pressure on Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. In spite of Sadr's gestures to encourage stability in regions such as Basra, Sadr City and other government-opposition strongholds, Maliki has continued with forceful military action against the Shiite Cleric and his loyalists."

Iraqi Unit Flees Post, Despite American’s Plea  - posted at CLG

Ex-CIA Analyst Outs Cheney
A quote...."What could have possessed Prime Minister Maliki to rush headlong into a battle he was thoroughly unprepared for? The Bush Administration has responded with certainty about only one thing: they were not involved in the planning. But former CIA analyst Ray McGovern says that Maliki "can't scratch his nose without asking Petraeus to make sure there aren't extra body guards around," much less plan an offensive without him. Moreover, McGovern suspects that that the initiation of the Basra offensive came not from Maliki, but from Vice President Cheney." -- See also....

Maliki snubbed U.K. in Basra
A quote...."BASRA, Iraq, April 10 (UPI) -- The relationship between Britain and Iraq soured over the fight in Basra as the Iraqi prime minister shunned British forces favoring American help instead. - British forces are stationed in Basra, securing and monitoring the southern port city throughout most of the war. But the Iraqi government opted to call 550 U.S. troops into the fight to help Iraqi national forces fight Shiite militias there instead, The Times of London said Thursday." -- Editor's special note....Maliki didn't "snub" the British.  Maliki had been planning this assault with Cheney for the last several months against al-Sadr, to preempt his predicated political success in the upcoming elections....and the Brits were neither informed nor invited. - mpg - posted 04-10-08

Iran should be "Set Up for an Attack" - The Agenda Behind The Anti-Sadr Agenda
A quote...."When Gen. David Petraeus along with U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker gave their testimony to the Senate on April 9, they did nothing more than to confirm in spades what had been being mooted and duly leaked by the Washington-based press: that the Bush-Cheney Administration had officially endorsed the line that Iran should be set up for attack, on grounds that it--and not any indigenous resistance--were responsible for the mounting death toll among American troops in Iraq."

Iran says U.S. aids rebels at its borders
A quote...."BAGHDAD — A series of conflicts with insurgent groups along Iran's borders may be impelling Tehran to back its own allies in Iraq in what it regards as a proxy war with the U.S., according to security experts and officials in the U.S., Iran and Iraq. -- Dozens of Iranian officials, members of the security forces and insurgents belonging to Kurdish, Arab Iranian and Baluch groups have died in the fighting in recent years. It now appears to be heating up once again after an unusually cold and snowy winter. -- In recent weeks, Iranians have begun the now-routine bombardment of suspected rebel Iranian Kurd positions in northern Iraq, and guerrillas have claimed incursions into northwestern Iran." -- For more on this see....US Support of Terror - MEK - PKK - Others

Hidden Agenda Manifest Destiny and Israel

While serious problems are crying out for funds, some 40 million dollars have been allocated to this aim. -- Bur the nation is in no mood for celebrations. It is gloomy. -- From all directions the government is blamed for this gloom. "They have no agenda" is the refrain, "Their only concern is their own survival." (The word "agenda", with its English pronunciation, is now fashionable in Israeli political circles, pushing aside a perfectly adequate Hebrew word.)"

Fascism is on the march: Berlusconi is back in power
A quote...."I cannot figure Italy out. On one hand they are the only government to be honest with itself about political crimes committed by fascist politicians against the citizens of Italy (Gladio). On the other hand a country that knows the dangers of such men as Il Duce and the terrorism of the P2 syndicate, nevertheless re-elects an avowed fascist and former P2 member Prime Minister. Italian lesson for the Dalai Lama
A quote...."BEIJING - Perhaps the Dalai Lama, king-god of Tibet, head of Lamaist Buddhism and icon of the present anti-Chinese protests, could have something to learn from Italy. Italy is the only country to have faced a problem similar to that of China with the Dalai Lama: of the occupation of a territory previously governed by a religious monarch. In the case of Italy, it was the pope, in the case of China, it is the Dalai Lama."

Why Beijing just can't grasp Tibet
A quote...."After almost 20 years of a relatively quiescent Tibet, the recent protests across the Tibetan parts of China have caught Beijing off-guard. Following the riots of the 1980s, the CCP's strategy towards Tibet has been one of dealing with dissent harshly while simultaneously developing the region economically. The hope is that rising prosperity will bind the restive region closer to the center and convince Tibetans that it is the party, rather than the Dalai Lama, that can ensure a better life for them.

Bush's Conspiracy to Create an American Police State: Part III, In Fascist Dictatorships Telling the truth becomes a crime.  --  Must Read - A quote....Had we wanted a monarchy, we had one! It didn't work out! Moreover, the one we had —King George III —was better than the cretinous would-be King who now arrogates unto himself powers he doesn't have and doesn't deserve. King George III was wrong and mad, but George Jr, a shrub, a lesser Bush, is merely ludicrous and slow witted. -- The truly intelligent are not threatened; in fact, they are found among Democracy's most staunch defenders. 9/11: Conflicting Data, Hardcore Questions and the Media Blackout
Special Note - A quote...."It almost goes without saying that when a major aviation accident occurs, just the fact that "Black Box" data has been released to the public makes mainstream news, not to mention content and analysis. Recently, the Flight Data Recorder information claimed to be from American 77 (AA77, Pentagon) and United 93 (UA93, Shanksville, PA) has been released to the public via the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA). Mainstream Media (and some alternative media) has not reported even the release of this information for such a high profile event. Why? It is interesting to note, CNN has reported an animation made by an independent researcher regarding the events at the Pentagon. The animation supports the government story of an aircraft impact with the pentagon. However, it is not based on any flight data. Why does CNN/Mainstream Media cover an animation based on zero flight data, but does not cover even the release of government provided flight data or the animation constructed and released by The National Transportation Safety Board? Perhaps someone doesn't want to raise curiosity of the content?"

Why Wall Street Socialism Will Fail
A quote...."I am talking, of course, about the collectivization of financial risk being promulgated by the Federal Reserve Board and the U.S. Treasury Department and applauded in pin-striped precincts from Park Avenue to Pacific Heights. Described as Wall Street Socialism by the gauche and more precisely identified as the "socialization of risk" by sophisticates, the new fashion leaves the profits of finance in private hands as of yore. It is only the "risk" -- of collapsed currencies, flawed speculation, busted hedge funds or the greedy misjudgments of large banks or brokerage firms -- that is quietly taken up by government entities and all too often shifted to taxpayers who do not understand the pompous phraseology but know full well that Washington will never bail out their hardware store or the widget plant where their son works. -- This has been going on for decades -- a major reason why finance has grown and prospered so much compared with most other industries." - underline by website editor. -- Editor's note: However one of the other reasons the wealthy have done so well for themselves during the last sixty years is not just through their creation of socialism for the rich, but also by creating a warfare state for the rich.  For more on this issue see....Effective Fed Funds Rate 03-24-07 - mpg

American Hegemony Is Not Guaranteed - posted at ICH
Must Read - A quote...."14/04/08 "ICH" -- Nonsensical on its face, the Petraeus/Crocker testimony is just another mask in the macabre theater of lies that the Bush regime has told in order to justify its wars of naked aggression against Muslims."

"Fact #1: Sadr is not allied with Iran. He speaks with an Iraqi voice and has his militia under orders to stand down from conflict. The Badr militia is the Shi'ite militia that is allied with Iran. Why did the U.S. and its Iraqi puppet Maliki attack Sadr's militia and not the Badr militia or the breakaway elements of Sadr's militia that allegedly now operate as gangs?"

"Fact #2: The Shi'ite militias and the Sunni insurgents are armed with weapons available from the unsecured weapon stockpiles of Saddam Hussein's army. If Iran were arming Iraqis, the Iraqi insurgents and militias would have armor-piercing rocket-propelled grenades and surface-to-air missiles. These two weapons would neutralize the U.S. advantage by enabling Iraqis to destroy U.S. helicopter gunships, aircraft, and tanks. The Iraqis cannot mass their forces as they have no weapons against U.S. air power. To destroy U.S. tanks, Iraqis have to guess the roads U.S. vehicles will travel and bury bombs constructed from artillery shells. The inability to directly attack armor and to defend against air attack denies offensive capability to Iraqis." -- Also posted at AntiWar , OpEdNews & InfoWars -- See also....

He said he strongly believed that a military solution only created an environment, while the ultimate resolution lay in political handling. -- Translation: That joining with the SCO in an effort to negotiate with the peoples who live in the region, the Taliban, the Pashtuns, etc. would be a much more constructive approach at reducing violence and tensions in that area than policies named "constructive instability", "full spectrum dominance" and "shock and awe" which has led a certain  psycho-country to bomb everything in sight. Too Much of Nothing: Crime Without Punishment, War Without End
Must Read - A quote...."The President of the United States has openly, proudly admitted that he approved the use of interrogation methods that are by every measure -- including the measure of United States law -- criminal acts of torture. It is one of the most brazen and scandalous confessions of wrongdoing ever uttered by an American leader -- and it has had no impact whatsoever. No scandal, no outcry, no protest, no prosecution. -- This pattern has recurred over and over throughout the Bush Administration. Bush and his minions commit crimes and atrocities in secret; they move heaven and earth to conceal their filthy deeds; they squirm and squeal like panicked rats when some small portion of their evil comes to light; they belch forth a relentless series of self-contradictory lies to cover up, obfuscate or explain away the crimes; and when at last their malefactions can no longer be denied, they trot out the president himself to say: "Yeah, we did it; so what?" Iraqi Government Fires 1300 Troops; Muqtada Pledges Defiance of US
A Juan Cole round-up -- Monday, April 14, 2008 -- A quote...." The Iraqi cabinet prepared a draft of a law forbidding parties with militias from running in the provincial elections scheduled for October. The measure is actually in an ironic way a victory for the Sadr Movement at which it is aimed, since originally Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki had intimated that he could exclude the Sadrists from running by fiat. They pointed out that only parliament could bar parties from running. The question is whether, with summer fast approaching, parliament will be able to achieve a quorum for passing the bill into law, and whether al-Maliki has the votes to put it through. The bill is the height of hypocrisy, since all major parties in parliament have paramilities, especially al-Maliki's current main partner, the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (see yesterday's posting on it and its strong relationship to Iran). ISCI denials that Badr any longer exists or has been wholly incorporated into government security forces are a Big Lie."

"Iraq's financial free ride may be over. After five years, Republicans and Democrats seem to have found common ground on at least one aspect of the war. From the fiercest foes of the war to the most steadfast Bush supporters, they are looking at Iraq's surging oil income and saying Baghdad should start picking up more of the tab,'

"Perhaps the Republicans and Democrats are under the impression that Iraq asked to be invaded and have its country destroyed (not to mention the destruction caused during the preceding decade of sanctions and bombing imposed by the "civilized" world). Needless to say, they didn't, and every cent needed for rebuilding that shattered country should be coming from the millionaires and billionaires and huge corporations in the United States who this war was intended to benefit, not from U.S. taxpayers and certainly not from the Iraqi people, who have already paid the price many times over in shattered (and ended) lives." -- Amen, Amen, Amen, bless you my brother for you have seen the glory of the promised land, when those that do the crime pay the dime....(and one day hopefully do the time) - mpg

Corporate tax declines and U.S. inequality
Special Note - A quote...."Over the last 60 years, the U.S. tax code has dramatically shifted away from corporate taxes and toward taxes on individuals, especially through the payroll tax, the financing backbone of Social Security and Medicare. In the 1950s, the corporate income tax brought in, on average, one of every four dollars in federal tax revenues. By the 2000s, however, it raised just one of every 10 tax dollars." -- As you can see by the chart, most of the increase in taxes supplied to the Government has been from FICA and as long as they use it for FICA, that's fine....if they use it for anything else, that's grand theft.  --  See quote below....

There's been a lot of really stupid talk for years from "conservatives" in this country about how the social security trust fund is "going to run out of money".  Here's a suggestion, perhaps they shouldn't be allowed to spend it and just stick an I.O.U. into the U.S.'s treasury, an I.O.U. they're not going to be around to pay back.

A quote from the IRC - not from the article above......"The Internal Revenue Service cautions employers to collect and pay trust fund taxes as required by law. "Trust Fund" taxes are withheld income, social security and Medicare taxes. These monies are withheld from the salary payments of employees and paid over to the government by employers."

".....the responsible officers may be held personally liable for these taxes through the TFRP. The IRS uses the TFRP to facilitate collection of the trust fund portion of taxes. Section 6672(a) of the Code allows the Internal Revenue Service to reach the personal assets of responsible persons who do not withhold and pay to the government amounts required to be withheld."

That's personally liable for 100% of all unpaid taxes!  Here's an idea..... these are "trust fund" taxes after all, why not interpret the law as also applying to the responsible office holders who hold these taxes in "trust" for this nation's employees.

Before they leave office these office holders would be required to pay back into the trust fund any amounts they'd overspent, otherwise these amounts would simply be deducted from their flesh.

Dear Dr. Dollar: Doesn't all the war spending stimulate the economy?
A quote...."Yes, this combination of war spending and tax cuts has created a federal budget deficit—a situation in which the federal government is spending more than it is taking in as taxes. And in times of weak economic growth, a deficit does tend to promote expansion because the government is increasing demand for goods and services with its spending more than it is reducing private demand through taxes. The Coming War with Iran: It's About the Oil, Stupid
Must Read - A quote...."World civilization is based on oil. The world is running out of oil. The oil companies and governments are not telling the truth about how close we are to the end. Dick Cheney knew about peak oil back in 1999 when he spoke to the London Petroleum Institute as Halliburton CEO. He predicted it would come in 2010. Cheney's aggressive anti-Iran rhetoric is driving Arab nations into the arms of Russia
A quote...."There is talk of new wars across the Middle East this summer - and there is nothing new about that. What is new is the reaction of America's closest allies in the Arab world to the latest outbreak of belligerent rhetoric. Led by Saudi Arabia, the Gulf states, and Egypt, they have indicated they don't like the war talk from Vice-President Cheney and his team. -- Furthermore, they're hedging their bets. While not exactly cosying up to Moscow they have opened up new lines of diplomacy with the Russians on a range of issues from regional security to nuclear technology, and joining the World Trade Organisation."

The Saudi Royals aren't completely stupid, they know exactly who's next after Iran.  Sure they helped Cheney and his buddies "do" 9/11, but when Cheney's no longer running the show (assuming he ever leaves gracefully and this country's government doesn't become a dictatorship) the MIOC elites will care less about what happens to the Royals or what's revealed about 9/11.

They're perfectly aware that most "Americans" are cowards when it comes to challenging those in power, easily bought, co-opted, intimidated or bribed, even when it's regarding anger over the deaths of their very own flesh and blood.  And being such timid folk they won't do a thing to Cheney and his boys when all that additional 9/11 "info" starts to leak out, it'll all be in the past by then, what our masters call a "fait accompli" and what our faux-news networks call old news, they'll simply pretend it isn't important anymore, except where it's useful in getting rid of the Saudi Royals.

You don't agree gentle reader?  Do these predictions offend your delicate sensibilities?

Excluding the bloggers, have any of you heard very much about the Saudi Royals connections to 9/11 in the last seven years?  Heard anything from this nation's faux-news networks about them, or about the Royals' connections to Bush, Cheney and the whole 9/11 cabal?  No?

Did you ever wonder why?

But you'll hear a lot more about it after Iran's taken care of.  The Saudi Royals will still be in power, still sitting on the US MIOC elite's oil (what little is left), and they'll have a big bright orange target painted on their collective backs.....the elites who run this nation call this sort of activity "realpolitiks", the rest of us "little people" just call it murder and mayhem.

James Madison, father of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, instructed: "We are right to take alarm at the first experiment upon our liberties," and elaborated, "I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments by those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations."" -- How the heck did this editorial get into the Washington Times? - mpg

And in a support role, you don't need such a big number." -- *Al-Maliki* -- The author who wrote the article above is disturbed by the American faux-press's lack of comment regarding Maliki's statement that the American troops should leave as soon as possible.  A position which is directly apposed to Bush's and Petraeus's recent statements that the troops are there to stay.  The American press ignored Maliki's statement because they know he's completely irrelevant, the US will stay for the oil and the geostrategic position Iraq affords the US in the Middle East.  Maliki should have know that he would become an irrelevancy....it's what happens when you sell yourself to someone like Dick Cheney. - mpg

(It is highly unlikely that either the US Congress or the Iraqi parliament would approve this, let alone both.)  --  Crocker and the Bush administration justify this by claiming the agreement will not rise to the level of a treaty—that it will be a mere Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), which can be concluded just between the respective countries' executive branches. However, all previous SOFAs have merely governed mundane issues, such as "wearing of the uniform, the carrying of arms, tax and customs relief, entry and exit of personnel and property, and resolving damage claims." NATO moved eastward, upping the ante yet again with Russia
A quote...."The big news at the recent NATO meeting in Romania is that Croatia and Albania are now happy members of the family of peace-loving nations conducting a brutal war in Afghanistan. Bush orders Iraq escalation to continue
A quote...."In a brief televised speech delivered just before noon Thursday, President Bush announced that there would be no further reduction of US troop strength once the current drawdown of forces is completed in July. This means that some 140,000 US soldiers will remain in occupation of the country through the November election, and likely until Bush leaves the White House on January 20, 2009."

Bush’s Parallel Universe
A quote...." WASHINGTON—No, it’s not your imagination: The “debate” about Iraq, and I use the word loosely, becomes ever more surreal as the occupation drags on. -- I don’t blame Gen. David Petraeus or Ambassador Ryan Crocker for their stay-the-course recommendation this week on Capitol Hill. Generals and diplomats should do what our elected leaders tell them to do—having covered South America, I can attest that the alternative is not pretty—and George W. Bush is indeed the Decider when it comes to Iraq policy. For now, at least."

Bush Abdicates to Generals on Iraq; 10 Killed in Sadr City; Al-Maliki Excludes Sadrists
A Juan Cole Round-Up - A quote...."War turns Republics into dictatorships. The logic is actually quite simple. The Constitution says that the Congress is responsible for declaring war. But in 2002 Congress turned that responsibility over to Bush, gutting the constitution and allowing the American Right to start referring to him not as president but as 'commander in chief' (that is a function of the civilian presidency, not a title.)  --  Now Bush has now turned over the decision-making about the course of the Iraq War to Gen. David Petraeus.  --  So Congress abdicated to Bush. Bush has abdicated to the generals in the field.  --  That is not a Republic. That is a military dictatorship achieved not by coup but by moral laziness."

Shia Intifada - The Rise of Muqtada al-Sadr
A quote...."At the end of March, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, with U.S. political and military support, launched Operation Knight's Assault to assert government control over Basra and several other cities dominated by rebel cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army. George Bush called the assault a "defining moment in the history of a free Iraq."

Separate US Airstrikes in Baghdad Kill 5

Iraq fighting kills more than 20 in Sadr City
A quote...."BAGHDAD -- Fighting in the Shiite stronghold of Sadr City killed 23 Iraqis on Wednesday, hospital officials said, and the U.S. military reported five troop deaths as April showed signs of becoming the worst month for American forces in Iraq since September."

All eyes on al-Sadr as Iraq violence swells
A quote...."BAGHDAD — As a young seminary student, his nickname was Mulla Atari, because he preferred video games to studying the Quran. Now, Muqtada al-Sadr is a radical cleric revered by millions of poor Shiites as a modern-day Robin Hood. He also may be the most powerful man in Iraq."

Ignorance is reinforcing America's failed project in Iraq
A quote...."Over the last few days, in the heart of Washington's beltway, American lawmakers have been actively engaged in a game of make-believe. During a series of special hearings, the men and women of the US Congress were being briefed on the "progress" of their country's five-year-long war in Iraq."

- mpg

BBC: Imperial Tool - posted at Counter Currents
A quote...."At a time of growing public disenchantment with the major media, millions now rely on alternate sources. Many online and print ones are credible. One of the world's most relied on is not - the BBC. It's an imperial tool, as corrupted as its dominant counterparts, been around longer than all of them, now in it for profit, and it's vital that people know who BBC represents and what it delivers."

5 years Ago: Media Celebrated--Prematurely--Victory in Iraq
A quote...."NEW YORK1:10 PM ET Five years ago today the U.S. media, and administration officials who directed the invasion of Iraq, celebrated the fall of Baghdad while expressing few fears about the future. -- "We're all neo-cons now!" crowed Chris Matthews on MSNBC. Joe Scarborough, also on MSNBC, declared, "I'm waiting to hear the words, 'I was wrong' from some of the world's most elite journalists, politicians, and Hollywood types."

The Very Annoying Washington Post
A quote...."One of the many annoyances about living in George W. Bush’s Washington is to read the commentaries about the Iraq War on the editorial pages of the Washington Post. Government is the Largest Employer - The Fading American Economy

Pain amid Asia's positive growth outlook
A quote...."WASHINGTON - Developing countries look likely to be hit less hard than others amid the downturn in the United States economy, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Yet the world's poorest will feel the impact of slowing global growth as foreign aid from rich countries stalls, a World Bank report shows."

Special Note to the BRIC's -- Here's a suggestion to Russia, China, India, Brazil and any other country who had bankers stupid enough to buy US financial products like those CDO's CMO's and other toxic sub-prime crud.  Since Bernanke at the Federal Reserve has recently stated it's his intention to buy back all those worthless securities, what the BRIC's and other's should do is quietly, very quietly, make arrangements through cooperative US banks to sell it all back to him.

War and the "New Middle East": US Coalition Building and the Arab League
A quote...."In the collective memory of many inside and outside the Arab World, the summits of the Arab League have a tradition of inconsistency and contradiction. They symbolize the dysfunction that has plagued the Arab World since the First World War. The pageantry and speeches of Arab League conferences are scorned by the citizens of Arab League members as hollow, empty, and as the pinnacles of hypocrisy."

Beyond Damascus
A quote....""This summit convened because it had to. The annual convocation of the summit is a firm and irreversible commitment, come what may," Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa told the top Arab congregation in Damascus earlier this week." -- This is the niceist, most diplomatically phrased article this editor has ever seen, which, while using extremely polite, soothing and delicately phrased language, states that basically the "Arabs" haven't gotten their collective act together because too many of their leaders are too busy sucking up to Washington DC.  --  The article is a master piece of subtle understatement. - mpg

Boycotts of U.S. Brands Affecting Economy
Must Read - Action Alert - A quote...."One of the contributing factors driving the U.S. economy’s sharp downturn is the anger of foreign consumers boycotting American brands over the Iraq war.  --  It’s not just many of the 1.5 billion Muslim consumers, either, that have quit buying Made in America. It’s people from France to Brazil to Canada to India, and it is a trend that began even before Bush invaded Iraq---remember all those millions of demonstratorsthe world over urging him not to do it?"

If Muslims were truly serious about trying to stop the ongoing occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan by US forces, they wouldn't allow their leaders to buy Boeing aircraft, US commodities, or US military equipment.  They wouldn't allow US oil companies or any US based corporations for that matter to operate on their nation's soil. -- It's the only message the US elites understand, they don't care about the millions of "rag heads" they kill or injure....they only care about one thing....their own money. – mpg  -- posted 01-22-08

Some Logical Questions For Ambassador Crocker
Special Note - Constitutional Alert - A quote...."Both the US constitution and the Iraqi constitution require that treaties be approved by their respective legislative branches. Yet Crocker states that Congress will merely be "fully informed" about the US-Iraq agreement. And he doesn't even mention the Iraqi parliament. However, all previous SOFAs have merely governed mundane issues, such as "wearing of the uniform, the carrying of arms, tax and customs relief, entry and exit of personnel and property, and resolving damage claims." R. Chuck Mason, the Congressional Research Service's expert on SOFAs, recently stated that a review of over 70 of them found that "none contained the authority to fight." - underline by website editor. -- King George is now making treaties for his kingdom (what was once formally known as the United States) without the Senate's constitutionally mandated approval.  This editor has come to the conclusion that before George Bush vacates the White House (assuming he ever does) his intentions are to violate every single constitutional provision that this nation has ever had. - mpg

I do, however, begrudge the money that’s taken from me to finance illegal and unnecessary war."

Cheney's and Maliki's new war in Iraq - Wednesday round-up - 9 articles - [ Day 16 ]

In backing the Basra assault, the US has only helped Sadr
Must Read - A quote...."Iraq's prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki - who ordered the assault and put his prestige on the line by supervising it in person - has emerged with his authority severely weakened. His army and police took a battering and failed to capture any ground, with several commanders and units going over to the Sadrist militias they were meant to be defeating. And the Bush administration's effort to portray Iraq as a place that is gradually calming down thanks to the "surge" of an extra 30,000 US troops looks far less convincing to an increasingly sceptical US public."

"The most likely explanation is that the Americans approved the assault, confidently expecting it would succeed within a few days. The hardline US vice-president, Dick Cheney, was in Baghdad two weeks earlier and may well have urged Maliki to go ahead. They hoped for a triumph to boast about in Congress. Now they must explain a disaster."

Maliki, Hakim, and Iran’s Role in the Basra Fighting
Must Read - A quote...."A recurrent explanation suggests that the operations were an attempt by Nuri al-Maliki and Abd al-Aziz al-Hakim to weaken the Sadrists ahead of October’s provincial elections, and perhaps to also further Hakim’s scheme of a single Shiite federal entity, which many Sadrists have resisted. On the surface this seems plausible. This has clearly been a political operation and not a purely security-guided one: Many militia forces in Basra unaffiliated with the Sadrists were left untouched."

Basra strike against Shiite militias also about oil
A quote...."Shahristani says the Basra assault, which was led by Iraqi forces and backed up by the US and British militaries, will allow better control of vital oil resources and facilities, curb smuggling, and help boost production to 3 million barrels per day (b.p.d.) by the end of the year, which would be the highest level in 20 years." -- For more on this issue see....War Resource 9/11

Saudi Prisoner Slams Then Leaves Guantanamo Hearing
A quote...."In a hearing plagued by translation problems on Wednesday, a Saudi Arabian prisoner first criticized and then boycotted the U.S. war crimes court where he is accused of plotting with al Qaeda to blow up ships in the Middle East. -- With the aid of Arabic-English translators, defendant Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed Haza al Darbi understood the proceedings well enough to tell the military judge that he believed the court at a U.S. naval base in a remote corner of Cuba was “a scam.”

For their sake, it should be made clear to US military personnel that they are violating the Geneva conventions and international law by holding these hearings.  That they themselves could be considered war criminals, and that they individually could be held liable and sued by their victims.

It 's very likely that in the near future many of the military personnel  participating in these criminal acts will be unable to visit various countries throughout the rest of the world, or even Europe, for fear of incarceration.  It is even possible that when the US’s constitution is
restored, the assets and property of these participants may be seized to pay compensation to their victims.

They should seriously consider what they're doing and the risks involved.

"I would abolish the Federal Reserve," avers Rogers, "and I would resign," a response that brings nervous laughter all around at the CNBC studios."

Ex-Fed Chairman Chides Current One
A quote...."In a speech on Tuesday, Paul A. Volcker, the imposing former Fed chief who felled the runaway inflation of the 1980s, chided the current chairman, Ben S. Bernanke, for toeing “the very edge” of the bank’s legal authority in orchestrating last month’s bailout of the beleaguered investment bank Bear Stearns. -- “Out of perceived necessity, sweeping powers have been exercised in a manner that is neither natural nor comfortable for a central bank,” Mr. Volcker told members of the Economic Club of New York."

Fed looks at options for weathering credit crunch
Special Note - Financial Warning - A quote...."NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The Federal Reserve is exploring backup options to extend its lending power in case the recent plans it has implemented to loosen the credit markets are unsuccessful, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. -- These backup plans include having the Treasury borrow more money than necessary to fund the government and keep the excess proceeds on deposit at the Fed; issuing debt under the Fed's name instead of the Treasury's; and asking Congress for authority for the Fed to pay interest on commercial-bank reserves instead of waiting until a previously enacted law permits it in 2011, the report said." -- Check out the comments. -  mpg

The Inflation Monster and Its Owner
A quote...."When central bankers blast central banks for being reckless, you know the problem is serious. Indeed, it seems that everyone suddenly really cares about inflation. Everywhere you go, this is the talk, at the grocery, the gas station, among your neighbors. Price increases have been persistent in major sectors such as medicine and education for decades, but today the trend is conspicuously hitting the stuff that people buy every day. So the reminders are ubiquitous, and public anger is growing."

A quote...."NEW YORK (Reuters) - Boeing Co (BA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) delayed its 787 Dreamliner for the third time on Wednesday, pushing the program about 15 months behind schedule, as it makes slow progress on assembling the revolutionary carbon-composite plane and continues to grapple with underperforming suppliers."

Boeing again puts off 787, cites supply-chain issues
A quote...."NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Boeing Co. will delay the maiden flight of its 787 Dreamliner by another three months or so after the aircraft maker underestimated the time needed to obtain and install the plane's various systems." -- After all the nasty things they said about the delays with EADS's Airbus A380....tsk, tsk, tsk. - mpg -- posted 01-16-08

Customer: Boeing 787 faces more delays
A quote...."Steven Udvar-Hazy, chairman of International Lease Finance Corp., a Los Angeles subsidiary of American International Group Inc.
