The Imperialist Propaganda of Hitchens and Friends
A quote...."It will be recalled that the predictions of a cakewalk towards a jubilant, free Iraq were not solely the product of the Bush administration. What has sometimes been called the 'pro-war Left' --in fact, a loose coalition of liberals, former radicals and ex-socialists -- has shocked and awed former colleagues and comrades, with bold and strident claims about the great works that American military power could achieve in Iraq, and elsewhere. It has been of great service to the Bush administration that, in addition to the shock troops of Christian fundamentalists, Israel sympathizers and neoconservatives, it could boast the support of many prominent liberal intellectuals, some of whom still claim an affiliation to the Left. (A number of them even claim to represent the authentic Left against the 'pseudo-Left'."

When Destruction Is the Cost of Denial
A quote...."If we recognize that denial represents valuing delusion more than reality, the seriousness of the danger carried by denial depends on the respective proportions of denial and truth in our lives. Our particular delusions may appear to provide us comfort and safety. As long as our lives continue to be sustained in significant part by what is true and healthy, denial will not seriously threaten our survival. But when what is true in our lives is overwhelmed by the lies we insist upon, our days grow shorter."

America and Rome : Compare

Increasingly, the Senate became filled with corrupt senators in the pay and bidding of the Legions, or local businessmen, or corrupt smugglers -- one senator was even paid by pirates! -- As a result of the increasing corruption and wasting of money, taxes became ever more onerous, and elections were mob affairs -- canidates murdered in the streets. The Fallacies of a 'Truth Commission'

Bush in his final years in office, they are now averting their eyes from the compelling evidence that the former President committed felonies in torturing detainees, waging aggressive war and conducting warrantless wiretaps. -- As a way to head off public pressure for prosecutions, several senior Democrats are floating the option of a bipartisan fact-finding body that would ask some questions but make sure no one went to jail. These statements are made by people who have done virtually everything in their power to destroy the American economy over the last few decades, but who have now proclaimed themselves to be our saviors. "'It would have been the end of our economic system and our political system as we know it.'--Rep. Kanjorski: $550 billion disappeared in 'electronic run on the banks' 09 Feb 2009 The Capital Markets Subcommittee Chair, Rep. Paul Kanjorski (D-PA), tells C-Span how the world economy almost collapsed in a matter of hours. In the C-Span video, Kanjorski reports on a "tremendous draw-down of money market accounts in the United States, to the tune of $550 billion dollars." According to Kanjorski, this electronic transfer occured over the period of an hour or two. "The Treasury opened its window to help. They pumped a hundred and five billion dollars into the system and quickly realized that they could not stem the tide. We were having an electronic run on the banks. They decided to close the operation, close down the money accounts, and announce a guarantee of $250,000 per account so there wouldn't be further panic... And that's what actually happened. If they had not done that, their estimation was that by two o'clock that afternoon, five-and-a-half trillion dollars would have been drawn out of the money market system of the United States, would have collapsed the entire economy of the United States, and within 24 hours the world economy would have collapsed... It would have been the end of our economic system and our political system as we know it." -- paragraph quoted from CLG

We have spent the last five days interviewing communities particularly impacted by the recent Israeli offensive, including medical personnel, humanitarian aid workers and United Nations representatives. A quote from Part I...."14:43 02/07/2009 -- "Interviewer’s Note: On December 27, 2008, Israel launched a devastating 22 day and night bombardment of the Gaza strip. The assault left, amidst an estimated 600,000 tons of concrete rubble, some 1,740 dead (this figure includes more than 350 ‘forgotten’ stillbirths and trauma-caused abortions in Gaza during the 22 days of terror), a figure that increases as the severely injured continue to die. A majority of the victims were civilians, including nearly 900 (again including the stillborn) children, approximately 5,500 severely wounded, and more than one third of the 1.5 million population was displaced while more than 14,000 homes were completely destroyed. Approximately 92,000 Palestinians are still homeless with more than 16,000 living as many as 20 to a small tent without latrines, as supplies remain blocked at the borders."

The resistance option
Military Analysis - A quote...."Hamas isn't Hizballah and Gaza isn't Lebanon. The resistance in Gaza -- which includes leftist and nationalist as well as Islamist forces -- doesn't have mountains to fight in. It has no strategic depth. It doesn't have Syria behind it to keep supply lines open; instead it has Israel's wall and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's goons. Lebanese civilians can flee north and east, while Gaza's repeat-refugees have no escape. The Lebanese have their farms, and supplies from outside; Gaza has been under total siege for years. Hizballah has remarkable discipline and is surely the best-trained, most disciplined force in the region. Although it has made great strides, Hamas is still undisciplined. Crucially, Hizballah has air-tight intelligence control in Lebanon, while Gaza contains collaborators like maggots in a corpse."

The global economy is in for a long-lasting, frosty winter
Must Read - A quote...."While mainstream media and neoliberal economists were ignoring for the last 20 years all the signs of an emerging capital accumulation crisis and the growing imbalances in the global economy, choosing instead to engage in uncritical praises of the virtues of free market capitalism (often displaying a form of ideological fanaticism unique in the annals of modern intellectual thought) and to produce celebratory overtures for unfettered wealth reminiscent of those odious statements from the Gilded Age, the radical tradition in political economy was producing path breaking analyses and critiques of neoliberal capitalism which reveal that the eruption of the September-October financial crisis and the ensuing global economic crisis were both predictable and inevitable."

Special Note - Chart - A quote...."In many ways, the past forty years of Anglo-American history have been marked by a revolution of a few who live by wealth upon the many who live by labor. If the first half of the 20th century can be seen at the revolt of the masses, this latter half has been a revolt of the elites. Nowhere is this more apparent than in delinking of increases in labor productivity from growth in real wages. I think that this graphic illustrates what's been happening pretty clearly. -- Given this the plea to "Save the Bankers" which will appear on the front page of the style section of tomorrow's New York Times is all the more galling." - There's a better solution shown below....

Gold Disconnects from USDollar
Special Note - Analysis - Charts - A quote...."The gold price has finally disconnected from its nemesis, the USDollar. This news should be read as the coming of spring after months of wintry torment, or as the sighting of land after 30 days adrift at sea in a derelict vessel. From 2002 to very early 2008, the gold price had risen from the massive speculative fervor that swept the United States and Europe, whose economies had been supplied largely by Asian factories. The mines from Latin America to South Africa to Australia greatly aided the process. The very paradoxical event of the USDollar rising this past autumn amidst truly horrendous news, one disaster after another, one major bank failure after another, one nationalization of a large financial institution after another, makes the disconnect all the sweeter for gold investors. That set the stage for a powerful gold price move." -- also posted at ICH -- Editor's Caution - Gold does not do all that well during Depressions, it will of course do extremely well if the dollar should collapse and/or there's hyper-inflation.  It's your call and it's your money folks. – mpg

Spend, Spend, Spend Until Daddy Takes the T-Bird Away
Special Note - Some quotes...."Of course, there’s a good reason they don’t work. As we explained yesterday, you can’t really buy your way out of a depression. Because the problem is deeper than that. The economy is not just taking a rest. It is dead. It needs to be restructured, not revived. And for that, the old structures must be destroyed. That’s what Schumpeter’s "creative destruction" is meant to do. But the feds don’t appreciate it. They talk “change,” but the only change they want is for things to go back to the way they were. So, they’re trying to stop the correction. And they’re using every worn-out trick, every blunderbuss weapon and every claptrap theory they can think of. Bail out the banks…create a "bad bank" …nationalize the banks…stop the foreclosures…send out checks…lower interest rates…build bridges to nowhere – they’ll do it all. But it won’t work. All these measures are designed to encourage consumption…in order to support the old structures. But more consumption is just what the economy doesn’t need. It is in trouble because people have spent too much. Now, they have to cut back…and when they do, every enterprise, speculative investment, and household that depended on excess consumption is in trouble." -- "“So, what’s the solution?” asked a colleague this morning, after we explained why the stimulus programs cannot work. -- “The solution to a depression is a depression,” we replied."

Or a nice, big, fat, juicy, war.  Of course that's more "spending money we don't have" and more "consumption".  But only for the government, when this society is locked-down after the next terrorist false flag event, and millions are dead and/or put in the internment camps that the government's been constructing over the last eight years, there'll hardly be any consumption by individuals.  No, instead they'll be given the choice of working twelve hours a day, six days a week for the "war effort", and if they're unwilling to do that  it'll be a choice between one of the various war fronts (there'll be a lot to choose from) or one of the internment camps (ditto). - mpg -- For more on this issue see....Effective Fed Funds Rate & Total Nonfarm Payrolls

Bradley will also request the disclosure of 42 secret documents that allegedly chronicle not only how Binyam Mohamed was tortured, but may also corroborate claims that Britain was complicit in his treatment. -- But first, Bradley, a US military attorney for 20 years, will reveal that Mohamed, 31, is dying in his Guantánamo cell and that conditions inside the Cuban prison camp have deteriorated badly since Barack Obama took office. Fifty of its 260 detainees are on hunger strike and, say witnesses, are being strapped to chairs and force-fed, with those who resist being beaten. Christian Support for Killing Iraqis
A quote...."Among the things about the Iraq War that I have never been able to understand is how American Christians have been able, in good conscience, to support this war. After all, no one can deny that neither Iraq nor the Iraqi people ever attacked the United States. That makes the United States the aggressor — the attacker — in this particular conflict. How could American Christians support the killing of Iraqis in such a war of aggression? How could they reconcile this with God’s sacred commandment, Thou shalt not murder." -- also posted at ICH & MWC

A Conservative Estimate of Total Direct U.S. Aid to Israel: Almost $114 Billion
A quote...."This estimate of total U.S. direct aid to Israel updates the estimate given in the July 2006 issue of the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs. It is an estimate because arriving at an exact figure is not possible, since parts of U.S. aid to Israel are a) buried in the budgets of various U.S. agencies, mostly that of the Defense Department (DOD), or b) in a form not easily quantifiable, such as the early disbursement of aid, giving Israel a direct benefit in interest income and the U.S. Treasury a corresponding loss. Hamas 'not responsible' for recent rocket attacks, says Israel

Another senior official said that at present, with its organisation shattered by Israel's offensive, Hamas was probably unable to prevent other groups from firing rockets." -- bold by website editor

Ok, is it clear to all you folks out there?

After not honoring Hamas’s overwhelming victory in the 2006 Gaza election. Israel instead, hatches a plot in collusion with the US-NRE, Saudi Royals and Egypt's Mubarak, to foment a vicious two year civil war to support Hamas's rival Fatah, imposes a brutal eighteen month blockade against the Gaza strip, and violates the tenuous truce later established with Hamas by assassinating some of Hamas's personnel, for which Hamas respond's by launching their rockets against Israel, which Israel then uses as a flimsy pretext to murder, using DIME weapons, flachette rounds, and white phosphorus shells, over 1,300 Palestinians, almost all of whom were innocent civilians, many, if not most them, woman and children....

....all of this murder and mayhem carried out ostensibly to stop Hamas from firing their rockets into Israel.

In reality of course the attack on Gaza was planned long ago as a means to destroy Hamas, which Israel didn't manage to do, in fact Hamas gained even more popularity, but Israel did manage disrupt their organization for the moment.

It's Declared Policy Now - Israel's Disproportionate Responses
A quote...."February 6-8, 2009 -- Prime Minister Olmert warned Hamas a few days ago (February 1) that a renewal of the firing of rockets from Gaza into Israeli territory would evoke a "harsh and disproportionate" response from Israel. This pointed choice of words was sobering and even shocking, given the repeated appearance of the same word, "disproportionate," in the world-wide condemnation of Israel in recent weeks, for the scale of the destruction it had just wrought in Gaza. "

Deconstructing Israel's 'Right to Exist'
A quote...."....even if all of Gaza’s outstanding issues were miraculously resolved to Tel Aviv’s satisfaction, Israel will still find pretext to continue agitating against Hamas and the people of Gaza. -- Why? -- Because they have yet to recognize Israel’s ‘right to exist’. -- Acceptance of this abstract, esoteric construct has been a longstanding and immutable demand of both the United States and Israel before substantive talks with Hamas, or any other self-described resistance group, can take place."

Justice for Palestinians vs. Balanced Reporting
A quote...."It is relatively easy for many casual observers of Middle East events to be deceived by balanced and ostensibly objective reporting. Simplistic divisions and false dichotomies are often presented. Moderates are juxtaposed against extremists and their identities vary according to current hegemonic agendas. Alternatively, competing narratives are asserted, both of which are assumed to have equal degrees of validity. The aim, of course, is to shape worldviews. Instead of informing readers about asymmetric claims, the reports frequently hide the ugly truth by presenting competing arguments as equivalent."

He added that no one came. -- The Gazan social affairs minister ordered "the aid to be returned to the agency if it turns out it is indeed its property," Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhum said. -- UNWRA said it suspended importing goods into the Gaza Strip and claimed that Hamas had seized supplies. -- Hamas denied it confiscated any supplies, saying it was a misunderstanding between drivers due to a lack of coordination. -- A Hamas spokesman said two of its members had met the head of UNRWA and were able to "end the crisis", but it was unclear if the agency would return to normal operations."

It may be experiencing less use or utility until values readjust, but unlike a War where massive amounts of Capital {most importantly people} are destroyed forever, Capital remains intact. This is the sole reason the above is true. Numbers have been distorted by inflation to benefit the owners of capital and deflation is correcting the accounting. It is bringing back value to those who labor, to those who are salaried, to those who have finished their working life and are subsisting on existing funds, to those who are starting their working lives with little savings, to all who haven't been blessed already with copious amounts of capital and the privileges it brings. By closing the gap, it is providing fair opportunity for all to partake in the workings of the economy and be compensated justly."

Whistling Past the Afghan Graveyard -- Where Empires Go to Die
Must Read - A quote...."It is now a commonplace -- as a lead article in the New York Times's Week in Review pointed out recently -- that Afghanistan is "the graveyard of empires." Given Barack Obama's call for a greater focus on the Afghan War ("we took our eye off the ball when we invaded Iraq..."), and given indications that a "surge" of U.S. troops is about to get underway there, Afghanistan's dangers have been much in the news lately. Some of the writing on this subject, including recent essays by Juan Cole at Salon.com, Robert Dreyfuss at the Nation, and John Robertson at the War in Context website, has been incisive on just how the new administration's policy initiatives might transform Afghanistan and the increasingly unhinged Pakistani tribal borderlands into "Obama's War." -- also posted at CommonDreams

Israel's Unjust War on Gaza -- Self-Defense Against Peace
Must Read - A quote...."Did self-defence justify Israel’s war on Gaza? -- Objections have been raised to this claim on grounds of a lack of both proportionality and necessity. To kill over 1000 Palestinians in 3 weeks, hundreds of them children, and wound thousands more, in order to deter a threat from rockets that did not kill or injure anybody in Israel for the six months the truce was declared by both sides, or even before Israel launched its attack on December 27, is so disproportionate as to be intolerable in any ethical system that holds Palestinian lives equal in value to Israeli lives. It is also so disproportionate as to defy belief that defence against these rockets was the real motive of the war. To ignore the many diplomatic avenues available to avoid even this threat, such as lifting the suffocating 18-month siege, suggests the same thing. -- A more fundamental objection, however, is the self-evident legal and moral principle that an aggressor cannot rely upon self-defence to justify violence against resistance to its own aggression. You can find this principle in domestic law and in the judgments of the Nuremberg tribunals. - bold by website editor

Enormous reliance is placed on the interrogation of the captured terrorist, Mohammed Amir Kasab, despite the fact that there is an abundance of other evidence – eyewitness accounts, CCTV and TV footage, forensic evidence, etc. – which could have been called upon to establish when, where, and what exactly happened during the attacks. And it doesn’t mean that this empire has any intentions of ending its control and expansion. Under the Bush Regime many people began to see the methods and means in which the U.S. maintains its super power status, while for years before it was easy to ignore. The methods and means under the Bush Regime were so escalated that people in the U.S. took notice and were horrified. People wanted it to end. And it seemed the only way to end it was to vote in someone who was nothing like Bush. -- Bush was a public relations nightmare for the empire, so the ruling class of the empire put Barack Obama in front of the people. He promised hope and change, and while many good people who care about humanity thought this meant an end to the wars for empire and torture what he really promised was a change in methods and means in maintaining an empire."

The Christian and War
Must Read - A quote...."The theme of this series is the application of the teachings of Jesus to contemporary social and political issues. A timely topic in view of the current war in Iraq is the attitude of the Christian toward war. The thesis of this presentation is that Jesus teaches simply and unequivocally that war is evil and that Christians should refrain from participation in it."

The Coming Fascism
A quote...."The military empire abroad is a bubble. It looks big, even shiny; it hovers over lesser entities as if it is something. The old alchemist fantasy of creating gold from lead at least led to many productive inventions – only when the fantasy became opportunistic dogma and blind faith were people fooled. In terms of American empire – 700 military installations around the world fearing for their collective future as they watch their individual backs – is not gold, is not powerful, and is not fooling anybody. -- The American financial empire exists as a thin, transparent, vulnerable shell of its former self. It too is a bubble – yet unlike the military fantasy, Americans readily conceive of financial bubbledom. Our money – that fiat paper which we have been using for our houses, our cars, our pay-later purchases – is vaporous in the sense that we do not really see it, feel it or understand it."

Small Change: Obama's Betrayal
A quote...."Just two weeks after his historic inauguration ceremony, Obama’s presidency is lurching towards failure, and not because three of his administration picks have been found to be tax cheats, but because nearly all of his administration picks are corporate whores and shills."

Why Are We Still at War?
A quote...." W.H. Auden: "Those to whom evil is done / Do evil in return."

Stanley Kunitz: "In a murderous time / the heart breaks and breaks / and lives by breaking."

And from 1965, when another faraway war got its jolt of righteous escalation from Washington's certainty, Richard Farina wrote: "And death will be our darling and fear will be our name." Then as now came the lessons that taught with unfathomable violence once and for all that unauthorized violence must be crushed by superior violence.

After Obama praises torture ruling, civil liberties group appalled
A quote...."The American Civil Liberties Union, which has generally been harshly critical of President George W. Bush and praiseworthy of President Barack Obama, has fired a torpedo across the Obama bow. -- After the British High Court ruled that evidence of a British resident's rendition and harsh interrogation at the Pentagon's Guantanamo Bay prison must remain secret because of threats made by the Bush administration to halt intelligence sharing, the Obama Administration offered a terse statement seemingly expressing support to the BBC.[and Britain for withholding the evidence]

Obama™ Inspired Israeli Investigations Prove Israel’s Actions Were “Reasonable”
A quote...."See?  Obama gets results.   Obama™ called for Israeli war crimes investigation less than one week ago and already we are getting to the bottom of what really happened in Gaza.  It shouldn’t matter that Obama called for Israel to investigate their own war crimes, right?  Who better? The truth is the truth after all…"

The Day Obama's Honeymoon Died
A quote...."In the last 24 hours, that golden halo that was over Barack Obama, is over. The Senate is about to gut his version of the stimulus bill, creating a bill that is "all tax cuts, all the time" and far too small to deal with the economic crisis. Obama has been out Reaganed, and America is set to go on a downward spiral because of it. The stimulus gutting of at least 100 billion and perhaps as much as 200 billion in spending to get just three votes: Snowe, Collins, and Ben Nelson, will mean that these Senators will get to control between 33 billion and 70 billion of spending each. 200 billion essentially ends the "spending" part, and leaves us with a bill that will be about 400 billion tax cuts, and 300 billion spending. So much for unity and bi-partisanship." -- What one commentator wrote....

"The honeymoon isn't over with mainstream America. -- That will take a while. -- But you are right--if we insist on trying to run the whole world--maintain military presence worldwide--and continue spending tax money on wasteful "defense" policies, we're toast." -- *Don* February 4, 2009 - 8:54am

The Way of Izvestia: BBC as a Metaphor for State Propaganda
Must Read - A quote...."14:25 02/04/2009  -- The presumption that underlies the decision is that the BBC has always been impartial when it comes to Israel-Palestine. An exhaustive 2004 study by the Glasgow University Media Group – Bad News from Israel – shows that the BBC's coverage is systematically biased in favour of Israel. It excludes context and history to focus on day-to-day events; it invariably inverts reality to frame these as Palestinian 'provocation' against Israeli 'retaliation'. The context is always Israeli 'security', and in interviews the Israeli perspective predominates. There is also a marked difference in the language used to describe casualties on either side; and despite the far more numerous Palestinian victims, Israeli casualties receive more air time." -- also posted at ElecIntifada
