Repudiation, Not Impeachment
Must Read - A quote...."Impeachment is the constitutional remedy for a unilateral president whose governance is an insult to traditional American democratic norms and values. However, impeachment alone is simply a measure which addresses the symptoms of a larger malaise that has stricken America. The arrogance associated with the concept of the unitary executive is prevalent throughout mainstream American political life. The passivity of the legislative branch is one byproduct of the dominance of the unitary executive. It is also an indicator that the will of the people, as expressed through their election of the people’s representatives to the Congress of the United States, no longer has the weight and bearing long associated with the American democratic experience.

The Appropriate Disillusionment of Andrew Bacevich and Cindy Sheehan
A quote...." 05/31/07 "Dissident Voice" -- --- I have in front of me two documents of despair, of disillusionment with the American political system that allows this criminal war to continue. Andrew J. Bacevich in his Washington Post op-ed column and Cindy Sheehan in her statement on her blog express despair over the failure of the Democrats placed in power by an antiwar electorate to take firm measures to end the war in Iraq. Sheehan declares, as she announces her departure from the spotlight that “hundreds of thousands of people are dying for a war based on lies that is supported by Democrats and Republican alike,” adding, “It is so painful to me to know that I bought into this system for so many years…”

Marine feels killing ‘right thing’
A quote...."Camp Pendleton (California), May 31: An officer who saw the corpses of Iraqi women and children sprawled across a bed in a home said in recorded testimony that he believed that "my Marines were doing the right thing" when they killed them."

Afghans' anger over US bombings
A quote...."Both were among 57 killed - almost half of them women and children - when American forces bombed their village in Shindand, western Afghanistan, and destroyed 100 homes  -  "The bombardments were going on day and night," said Mohammad Zarif Achakzai, who had to flee their mud house in the Zerkoh Valley.  -  "Those who tried to get out somewhere safe were being bombed. They didn't care if it was women, children or old men."

The Destruction of Iraqi Healthcare Infrastructure
A quote...." Before Iraq suffered through an embargo and two wars with the United States starting in 1990, its healthcare system was considered one of the best in the Middle East. Iraq had well-trained physicians and modern facilities. Today, the healthcare system barely exists at all, with few healthcare workers and hospitals that are battlegrounds.

ACLU suit alleges firm is profiting from torture - The Boeing subsidiary is accused of helping facilitate mistreatment...

True capitalism at work.  Our nation's "conservatives" must be very proud of all of this.  Think of the wonderful business opportunities that now exist for Boeing.  They don't have to just settle for the US government's torture business, there are dozens of other governments out there they could work for, thousands of opportunities if you include corporations and private individuals.  Think of what they could do for the narco-trafficking business.

And why just settle for transporting the victims to torture and death.  You could torture them right on the plane, it would save you time.  Boeing could join with other manufactures to design state of the art mechanical and electrical devices to be used on the victims while they're being transported.  And if they happen to die from their treatment..... ocean disposal (with the properly designed airlock) from thirty thousand feet would be a practicable way to get rid of the bodies.

Think of that folks, next time you board a Boeing plane.  And if you're psychically sensitive at all, you just might still be able to hear the faint screams of the victims while you’re flying at thirty thousand feet.

It gives one a warm and cozy feeling doesn’t it?   mpg  -  posted - 12-03-06

CBS Silences General Dissent
A quote...."Listening to retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. John Batiste, you sense his intense loyalty to the military. He commanded the Army’s 1st Infantry Division in Iraq, capping a 31-year Army career. So why did CBS News fire him as a paid news consultant? A straight answer from CBS seems as elusive as those Iraqi weapons of mass destruction.  -  The short answer: Batiste appeared in a television advertisement sponsored by VoteVets.org, a nonpartisan group that advocates for veterans. In the 30-second spot, he said, in part: “Mr. President, you did not listen. You continue to pursue a failed strategy that is breaking our great Army and Marine Corps. I left the Army in protest in order to speak out. Mr. President, you have placed our nation in peril.”

Iraq's Militias Under the US Surge - Killing with Impunity
A quote...."The motive is political: Commercial kidnappers in Baghdad - numerous, violent and well-organised though they are - have never had the need or capacity to operate on this scale. The raid also shows good intelligence and a carefully worked-out plan to enter and leave the ministry.  -  The most obvious explanation for the abductions is that they werein retaliation for the killing of Abu Qader, also known as Wissam Wiali, the Mehdi Army commander in Basra, by a British-backed operation last week. It may be designed to send a message that any British action will be met with retaliation."

Iraq: 5 British 'hired guns' abducted
A quote....."Five British 'security contractors' were abducted by persons unknown in Baghdad today. This comes after the May 12 incident in Mahmoudiyah in which three US soldiers were abducted. For the anti-western insurgents, killing members of the occupying forces (and their 'privately' organized sidekicks) is much simpler. To do an abduction you need a larger ambushing/assault force, a get-away plan, and a relatively extensive safe area to retreat to."

Editor’s note : This is the beginning of the end.  For anybody who's seen the movie Michael Collins you'll know what's going to happen next. Why I am Ashamed to be an American
A quote...."Having grown up in a small town in Central Kansas I was taught to believe that my country, the United States of America, was a land committed to justice and peace, a nation that one could count on to do the right thing, a country of civilized folks who had but one thing in mind…….. that of doing the will of God. I also began to realize that there is nothing wrong with feeling ashamed for having done something wrong, that such a response is a rather natural consequence of having violated one’s conscience, a voice from deep within that is no doubt a reliable guide for how a man (or woman) of true integrity ought to live his (or her) life. However, for those who seem to lack the capacity to feel ashamed, one can only wonder what must be wrong with them."

Many policemen don't like the drive against civil liberties any more than I do. But, even granted that they are only doing their job, I can promise you this. Editor's note : The US has been the biggest supporter of SCIRI, when the US talks about the "Iraqi government", i.e. "the Maliki government"  they're talking about SCIRI, when the US talks about "death squads" they're mostly talking about SCIRI and when the US talks about "we're [the US] going to be riding with the bad boys" they are definitely talking about SCIRI.

That's what President Bush said last year, in a Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.  -  Those were fine words, spoken by a man with less right to say them than any president in our nation's history. No posts (except the three shown below)  for Memorial Day except this....A year from today the US will still be occupying Iraq, and as a result tens of thousands more people will be killed or injured. -  Something to think about -  mpg

Some REAL news on what's going on in Lebanon.  The facts are still unsettled, but what seems clear is that the Bush Neocons and their policy of "constructive instability" are getting a lot more people killed in that country.

Proxy Wars
Must Read - A quote...."  05/28/07 "ICH" -- - I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised.  The last seven years of this administration have created and exposed so many global problems that it is virtually impossible to keep track.  The mainstream media is still demonstrating complicity by not reporting the truth of the horrific violence we are witnessing all over the world, and it’s very easy for critical events to escape our notice. "

The Mirror Crack'd: Into the Lebanese Labyrinth with the Angry Arab
Must Read - A quote...."Again, for anyone interested in the fate of the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon who have been caught in the murderous crossfire of the geopolitical games being played out on the bodies of innocent people by the Bush-Cheney gang, the Saudi royals, the Israelis and the Iranians, you need to consult the site of As'ad AbuKhalil, the "Angry Arab." Born and raised in Lebanon, and long a leading political science professor in the United States, AbuKhalil is one of the very, very few voices in English providing both eyewitness testimony of the suffering and in-depth analysis of the "deep politics" (and the shallow as well) behind the bloodshed. The United States is now shipping loads of ammo to the Lebanese army to wipe out the extremist Sunni militia that the Lebanese government -- or rather, the Hariri faction and the Saudis -- had earlier installed, with Bush's blessing, in the wretched Palestinian camps in Lebanon as a counterweight to Hezbollah. This was part of a larger Bush-backed strategy of arming and funding Sunni extremists to counteract growing Shiite influence in the region. These included several groups affiliated with al Qaeda -- which bothered the Bush administration not at all."

Bush administration endorses anti-Palestinian, anti-Syrian offensive in Lebanon
Must Read - Some quotes...."Yet, the massively disproportionate assault on the camp has been unconditionally endorsed by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. “The Siniora government is fighting against a very tough extremist foe,” Rice said. “But Lebanon is doing the right thing to try to protect its population, to assert its sovereignty and so we are very supportive of the Siniora government and what it is trying to do.”

And...."There is in fact no evidence linking Fatah al Islam to Syria. The group is Sunni and shares the Salafist (sometimes referred to as Wahabbist after its founder) ideology of Al Qaeda, which provides the ideological basis for the regime in Saudi Arabia."

They Thought They Were Free The Germans, 1933-45 by Milton Mayer, an excerpt
Must Read - A quote...." But Then It Was Too Late  -  "What no one seemed to notice," said a colleague of mine, a philologist, "was the ever widening gap, after 1933, between the government and the people. Just think how very wide this gap was to begin with, here in Germany. And it became always wider. You know, it doesn’t make people close to their government to be told that this is a people’s government, a true democracy, or to be enrolled in civilian defense, or even to vote. All this has little, really nothing, to do with knowing one is governing."

Bush Pens Dictatorship Directive, Few Notice
A quote...."It is hardly surprising not a single corporate newspaper reported the death of the Constitution. Go to Google News and type in “National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive” and hit enter. Google returns ten paltry results, not one from the New York Times, the Washington Post, or related corporate media source. Google Trends rates the story as “mild,” that is to say it warrants nary a blip on the news radar screen. Of course, another death blow to the Constitution, already long on life support, is hardly news. Few understand we now live in a dictatorship, or maybe it should be called a decidership."

And if you love the country, or care about the world, aren't you obligated to support the lesser of two evils, even if it's only slightly less evil?  -  To which I reply: What's really evil is being forced to choose between people on the one hand who support the war, and accuse anyone who questions it of "helping the terrorists" -- and people on the other who oppose the war, criticize the war, pledge to the end the war, and then vote to keep it going.  -  Or being asked to choose between the village idiot and someone who's consistently outsmarted by him."

Fear-Mongering and Fiction: Cheney Addresses West Point Grads
A quote...."As Cheney told the graduates of the enemies they may soon face — terrorists “who oppose and despise everything you know to be right, every notion of upright conduct and character” — there were moments when it seemed that he had simply recycled an old speech from 2002. Indeed, long after most members of the Bush administration have distanced themselves from some of the more insidious claims that propelled the U.S. into war with Iraq, the vice president continues to repeat them as fact. At one point today he cited the link between Iraq and Al Qaeda (which has been thoroughly debunked) as the reason why the U.S. invaded Iraq."

Same old, same old.  Just continue to follow the Leo Strauss script....arrange a "fortuitous" attack by an "outside enemy", demonize that enemy, destroy all constitutional restraints on your power, take over the "mass media" and continue to promote war.

It's all just so boring and completely absurd.  The Nazis did it with much more finesse, flair and better propaganda.  However Cheney and Co. should be complemented on one aspect of their effort....not even the Nazis continued to openly fund their "enemies" (see P2OG) or encourage their "friends" to do so (see The Redirection), five years after they started their wars.  Not even the German people back in the 1930's were stupid enough to stand for that.

One would have to guess being that credulous really does make Americans “exceptional”.- mpg

Al Gore Doesn't Accept the 9/11 Cover Up, So Why Do You?

Hindsight casts a harsh light on mistakes that should have been visible at the time they were made. But now, years later, with the benefit of investigations that have been made public, it is no longer clear that the administration deserves this act of political grace from the American people."[1]

Iraq war funding bill fiasco masks collusion between Bush and Democrats
A quote...."Expansion of Middle East oil war is a bipartisan imperative.  -  On May 22, 2007, Washington’s Democrats obediently capitulated to the Bush administration, handing Bush a war spending bill completely stripped of conditions that would, in any way, slow the administration’s relentless Middle East conflagration. In fact, the new bill is an even more egregious blank check for a massive “surge” of Bush administration violence throughout the region, opening the door for a war with Iran. New Iraq “benchmarks” pushed by the Democrats themselves will result in new atrocities and more bloodshed, funded by the Democrats themselves."

Iran says US must change Iraq policy for talks to succeed
A quote...."It [Iran] says the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq is a prerequisite for security to be restored to its war-ravaged neighbour.  -  Washington charges Iran with fomenting the violence by supporting extremist groups, mainly Shiite. What Congress Really Approved: Benchmark No. 1: Privatizing Iraq's Oil for US Companies
Must Read - Some quotes...."On Thursday, May 24, the US Congress voted to continue the war in Iraq. The members called it "supporting the troops." I call it stealing Iraq's oil - the second largest reserves in the world. The "benchmark," or goal, the Bush administration has been working on furiously since the US invaded Iraq is privatization of Iraq's oil. Now they have Congress blackmailing the Iraqi Parliament and the Iraqi people: no privatization of Iraqi oil, no reconstruction funds."

"With the Bush administration's "Support the Troops" bill and its benchmarks, primarily Benchmark No. 1, we finally have the reason for the US invasion of Iraq: to get easily accessible, cheap, high-grade Iraq oil for US corporations."

"Now the choice is for US military personnel and their families to decide whether they want their loved ones to be physically and emotionally injured to protect not our national security, but the financial security of the biggest corporate barons left in our country - the oil companies."

Editor's note : It's been five long years, it's costing this nation trillions of dollars, it's costing hundreds of thousands of lives....it's time to choose.

Either one is a Neo-Roman Centurion working for the Oil Companies....or one isn't.  Either one is the organic component of a weapon system, a MIOC product, to be discarded when damaged, to be forgotten when one's contract is up...or one isn't.  Either one is an idolater, a worshipper at the alter of money, a mindless drone in a system whose only moral value is profit and whose costs are measured in death and destruction....or one isn't.

Major Troop Reductions Imminent -- Again
Must Read - Some quotes...."For four straight years, the same set of war supporters have constantly and repetitiously given the same exact false assurances about Iraq -- virtually verbatim -- in order to protect themselves politically. It is hard to know what is more amazing about this ritual -- (a) how stupid they believe Americans are that they can make the same commitments over and over which never transpire, or (b) that the press jumps each time to proclaim the imminent troop reductions as though it never happened before:" - "What exactly could war supporters do that they have not already done in order to lose complete credibility? Americans have clearly tuned them out, but they continue to be[lieve] the highly respected war experts upon whom the media relies. Listen to Segment || Download Show mp3  ||  Watch 128k stream || Watch 256k stream  || Read Transcript
Must Review - Must Listen - A quote...."Islamist militants entrenched in a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon are facing an ultimatum to surrender or face further military action. The Lebanese government accuses Fatah al-Islam of having ties with al-Qaeda and the Syrian government. Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh joins us to talk about another theory of who is backing the militant group - the Lebanese government itself, along with the United States. Last March, Hersh reported the U.S. and Saudi governments are covertly backing militant Sunni groups like Fatah al-Islam as part of an overarching foreign policy against Iran and growing Shia influence. [includes rush transcript]"

Seymour Hersh gives a rundown on what's REALLY  going on in Lebanon. And here's the meeting where Cheney and the Saudi Royal's finalized their new plan of "constructive instability". -  mpg

US planes deliver ammunition to Lebanese army
A quote...." BEIRUT - US air force planes have started delivering military equipment and ammunition to the Lebanese army which is locked in fighting with Islamist extremists, a Western diplomatic source said.  -  "Eight US air force cargo planes have started arriving in Lebanon to deliver military equipment and ammunition to the Lebanese army," said the source, who did not wish to be identified."

Beirut in talks to end clashes with Islamists
A quote...."NAHR AL-BARED, Lebanon (AFP) - The Lebanese government said Friday that talks are under way to negotiate an end to deadly clashes with Islamist militants but added it remains ready to use force if the talks fail."

Tehran ignores the bluff and bluster
A quote...."The talks between the United States and Iran at the ambassadorial level, scheduled to take place in Baghdad on Monday, appear to have begun meandering even before they commence.   -  As such, even if they are held, they may serve little purpose. But things needn't be as gloomy as they seem. No one expects an immediate effect or sudden results. Washington is manifestly uneasy that it is being called on to negotiate with Iran from a position of weakness.  -  On its part, Iran senses that the US is only seeking a very limited dialogue restricted to solving its problems in Iraq in practical terms, without getting into the "big Iraqi picture". And Iran senses that the US is not committed to adopting a constructive approach that could lay the foundations for better mutual understanding that may lead to cooperation between the two adversaries and even rapprochement."

How Can Bush Bring Freedom and Democracy to Iraq When He Brings Tyranny to America?
Some quotes...."Disinformation is being fed to the media that Iran is responsible for attacks on US troops in Iraq. This disinformation is routinely reported without skepticism by the American media in the face of challenges from experts. For example, a recent British report concludes: "few independent analysts believe Tehran is playing a decisive role in the sectarian warfare and insurgency." - "What do people in other countries think when they hear Bush prattle on about "freedom and democracy" while he ignores opinion polls and election results and detains people without warrants, tortures them, and puts them before military tribunals in which they are denied even knowing the evidence against them? Bush has contrived a situation for defendants in which no defense is possible. In Bush’s America, people can be executed on the basis of hearsay and secret evidence. If this is "freedom and democracy," what is tyranny?"

The Centrality of Iraq and Afghanistan in Defeating the Empire
A quote...."From a world historical perspective, the Iraqi and Afghan resistance has successfully stymied Washington’s pursuit of world domination through a series of offensive wars. The success of the national liberation movements led to the over-extension of the US imperial armed forces – weakening efforts to launch programed ground wars against Iran, Syria and elsewhere.  The prolonged resistance led to wholesale domestic opposition in the face of never-ending US casualties and skyrocketing financial costs."

Hitler Would Have Sympathized  ========== ========== ========== ========== ==========
05-26-07
mpg

It's a shame really, Hitler would have sympathized with the Neocons as they mournfully watch their twenty to thirty year campaign for world domination go down the drain.

Twenty years of cajoling, and sponsoring the "Christian" Right in the US.  Twenty years of Saudi, Pakistani and US financing of the Wahhabist Jihadists.  Letting the glorious word be spread to all the cognoscenti, the elites of our nation, of what was to come by publishing the '92 Defense Planning Guidance. Formally establishing the DPG by setting up PNAC. Spending twenty years helping the Neocon's fellow travelers and backers consolidate control over the "mass-media" to propagandize the US's population for when the blessed day would arrive. Having clandestine meetings such as Cheney’s energy task force prior to 9/11 to divvy up Iraq's "booty and bling".

Then the day arrives, the penultimate moment of joy, the pretext the Neocons and this nation's elites had so carefully arranged, the event known as Loe Strauss’s "noble lie", which many of us "little people" know as 9/11, finally occurred bringing to fruition all of their carefully laid plans such as.....

Enacting a dictatorship by legislating such concepts as the Unitary Executive Privilege, ending Habeas Corpus, the creation of Star Chambers, and developing terms like extraordinary rendition, enemy combatant and other polite euphemisms to cover up torture and murder. Gutting the constitution of the United States and many international treaties.  Implementing new and novel concepts of war fighting like Rumsfeld's 2001 Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) submitted to Congress three weeks after 9/11.  Carefully arranging 7/11 and other false flag events to further stimulate the west’s populations.  Setting up the concept of continually funding "terrorist" organizations through plans such Rumsfeld's P2OG to enable more “fortuitous” incidents in an effort to provide more pretexts for world wide conquest.

All of these carefully laid plans, thought out and honed to the peak of perfection over a generation, concocted  in an effort to size the richest oil prize on the planet, establish a permanent series of US bases throughout the Middle East, create a world wide hegemony called the "New American Century"  and of course…avoid a repetition of Vietnam .

All of them, everyone of them, came crashing down for precisely the same reasons the plans for the Vietnam adventure did.

What they planned for, and what they did, was immoral, illegal and wrong.

No doubt this nation’s elites will console themselves by counting up the enormous profits they've made during the war from their defense and energy related investments.

No doubt they'll try again thirty years from now.

No doubt the American people will let them. – mpg

Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich: "Privatizing Iraq's Oil is Theft!" - (YouTube 7min 24sec) - posted at ICH
A quote...."At at noon press conference, on May 24, 2007, at the Cannon Terrace, on Capitol Hill, Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH), ripped into the Bush-Cheney Gang's legislative scheme to privatize the oil of Occupied Iraq. He charged: "Privatizing Iraq's oil is theft." He also called the Iraq Supplemental Bill: "a moment of truth for the Democratic Party." Rep. Kucinich explained how the proposed Bill, now pending before the U.S. Congress, via its benchmarks, will provide for the privatization of Iraqi oil. It requires the regime in Iraq to pass a law called, "The Hydrocarbon Act." If they refuse to do so over a billion dollars in reconstruction funds will be blocked by the Bush-Cheney administration, he claimed. This measure, which Rep. Kucinich characterized as "blackmail," would permit multinational oil corporations---many based in the U.S.--to exercise control over the Iraqi oil. The Democratic leadership in the Congress is giving its explicit support to this legislative device. Unless the scheme is stopped, Rep. Kucinich predicted, we will be looking at an Iraqi War "going on forever!"

Our national nervous breakdown has begun
A quote...."But our national nightmare and our soon to be national nervous breakdown are far beyond the prevailing normalcy of the culture of hate and the almost open-armed acceptance of it by uber-nationalists and sane people alike. We have entered a whole other stage of panic and fury, one in which our pompous President actually threatens a journalist's children on television in a sort of wink-wink mob-like suggestion that one might find coming out of the mouth of Tony Soprano:   "They are a threat to your children, David,' he said to NBC's David Gregory"

This national psychosis is being caused by the contradiction - "the gap" - between what is done (reality) and what is said (fantasy) by our nation’s elites, media, and the national consensus.  It is a gap that has turned into a yawning chasm which is going to swallow this nation in its entirety.

NONE of the people in this country, especially the wealthy amongst us, who possess that peculiar "gift" of maintaining two mutually exclusive and contradictory sets of values and beliefs  (the ability to lie to themselves and everyone around them with ease), can keep up the pretense any longer.

The TRUTH, as inevitable as gravity, as remorseless as time, a tidal wave during which each successive year was built higher and higher in reaction to this nation's lies and barely held back by the wall of falsehoods, propaganda and spin, now towers above us and can no longer be contained.  This thunderous avalanche, this vortex of karma, will now come crashing down upon all of us.

May God have mercy on this nation when that happens. - mpg

U.S. Working To Sabotage Iran Nuke Program
A quote...."CBS News has learned that Iran is continuing to make progress on its expanded efforts to enrich uranium — in spite of covert efforts by U.S. and other allied intelligence agencies to actively sabotage the country's nuclear program.  -  "Industrial sabotage is a way to stop the program, without military action, without fingerprints on the operation, and really, it is ideal, if it works," says Mark Fitzpatrick, the former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Non-Proliferation and now Senior Fellow in Non-Proliferation at the International Institute for Strategic Studies."

It isn't just Iran and it isn't just nuclear reactors.  Many countries have encountered "difficulties" with industries they've set up to compete with the US elites on an economic basis.

What happens is they suddenly discover formally friendly banks no longer want to do business with them. Get to watch as unknown rivals enter from left field devastating their markets with mysterious sources of financing.  Witness contracts signed by them in good faith, which they thought were iron clad, suddenly being declared null and void. Be surprised by having union relations, which untill recently were quite amicable, abruptly no longer being so.  Suddenly finding themselves under attack by “terrorists”, or experiencing unfortunate “accidents”, or being subject to many of the other tactics and techniques our elites use to disrupt nascent "competitors" or “nation states” who won’t toe the line or pay the vig to them.

This is the way the US elites do business.  This is the way their corporations do business. This is America's klepto-crony-capitalism in action at its very finest. They will cheat you any chance they can get.

As would happen if you did business with any organized crime syndicate this is what you can expect if you deal with them. No relationship, contract or agreement entered into with them is what it seems, everything comes with strings attached, a threat, or even death....everything – mpg

Did the US Lie about Cluster Bomb Use in Iraq?.
A quote...."What we do know is this: Since the major combat phase of the war ended in April 2003, the U.S. military has dropped at least 59,787 pounds of air-delivered cluster bombs in Iraq -- the very type of weapon that Marc Garlasco, the senior military analyst at Human Rights Watch (HRW) calls, "the single greatest risk civilians face with regard to a current weapon that is in use." We also know that, according to expert opinion, rockets and cannon fire from U.S. aircraft may account for most U.S. and coalition-attributed Iraqi civilian deaths and that the Pentagon has restocked hundreds of millions of dollars worth of these weapons in recent years.  -  Unfortunately, thanks to an utter lack of coverage by the mainstream media, what we don't know about the air war in Iraq so far outweighs what we do know that anything but the most minimal picture of the nature of destruction from the air in that country simply can't be painted. Former Australian army lawyer says Rumsfeld's handling of Iraq almost criminal
Must Read - A quote...."Kelly, who was among the most senior Australian officers in Iraq during 2003 and 2004, was scathing of Rumsfeld's role.  -  "If I look at people like Donald Rumsfeld, all I can say is, that verges on criminal negligence," Kelly told the ABC of Rumsfeld's failure to acknowledge problems in Iraq.  -  Kelly — an expert on the law of occupation and peacemaking operations with experience in Somalia, Bosnia and East Timor — said he offered a plan to stop looting and protect infrastructure soon after former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was toppled. We knew exactly what needed to be done," Kelly told the ABC.  -  "Then Rumsfeld came in and overruled that concept and basically threw it out the window and that was where things really started to go wrong," he said"

Iraq’s "Year Zero" (By Felicity Arbuthnot)
Must Read - A quote...."The continuing destruction of Iraq’s history—ancient and modern—of homes, lives, and civil society under the watch of and at the hands of US and British troops—in defiance of a swathe of international law—is an uncanny and chilling mirror image of Pol Pot’s Year Zero. In 1975  -  Society was to be purified... throughout Cambodia, deadly purges were conducted to eliminate remnants of the old society: the educated, the wealthy, the (religious elders) police, doctors, lawyers, teachers, former government officials, soldiers... Education, health care... was halted, cities forcibly evacuated... The country sealed off from the outside world. History, monuments, ancient and modern, world heritage sites, were erased from the earth. Newspapers, radio and television were banned. (“Pol Pot in Cambodia 1975-1979”)"

Beware America's Motives for Holding Talks
A quote...."What do the Iranians think America's motives are in entering into direct talks? According to this article from Iran's Baztab News, America's goal is clear: At the behest of Israel and the Sunni Arabs, it is to 'rid the region of Iran's influence and block it from playing any role in Iraq's development.' Also clear from this article is the fear in Tehran that the Baathists - Saddam's detested political party - could arise again under American and Saudi influence. The Baztab News is run by a former member of Iran's Expediency Council, which is chaired by former Iranian President Hashemi Rafsanjani, who favors talks with the U.S."

Editor's note: In the opinion of this editor it is unrealistic of Mr. Jafarian to suggest excluding the Iraqi Bathists from positions of power since they still represent a substantial minority of Iraq’s people, are currently leading much of the resistance in Iraq against the American occupation and are still reluctant to make any alliance with the extremists in al Qaeda.  In other words they have to be negotiated with, included in the current Iraqi government and offered an equal and proportionate share of Iraq's oil wealth. - mpg

It is Cheney's third Middle Eastern tour in two years to garner support for US policy towards Iran. - For the past few years - since the invasion of Iraq - the Bush administration has been complaining about Iran's increasing regional influence and its implications for Gulf security and US interests in the Middle East. Unmasking of the Authoritarians

A New Improved America

There is a mortal rot in the country, made manifest by many little rots that are hard to integrate mentally yet are, I think, somehow related. The change is grave, accelerating, probably irreversible, and fascinating. Things are not as they were.  - The United States is the most hated country on the planet, followed by, to the extent that there is a distinction, Israel. So far as I know, there are no other contenders. You can say “Who cares?” as many will say, or “Screw’em if they can’t take a joke,” or “I’d rather be feared than loved.” All very droll. Still, it is an interesting datum. No country ever lives up to its own PR, but there was a time when America was widely admired. Now, almost universally, it is seen as a rogue state. And is.

COWARDS!
A quote...."It would be nice to be able to say, "We never saw this coming," but that would be a lie. Deep down inside everyone knew that the Democrats would eventually cower before Bush's Iraq war belligerence. These Democrats are after all, more or less, the same spineless crew that rolled over and voted for Mister Bush to invade Iraq in the first place. And don't let them rewrite history...Democrats knew the basis for the Iraq war was a pack of lies, they just didn't have the courage to stand and be counted."

Russ Feingold, D-Wisc., said in a statement released Tuesday. "There has been a lot of tough talk from members of Congress about wanting to end this war, but it looks like the desire for political comfort won out over real action."

Knee-deep in economic data and stories about the recent legislative session, I heard Morgan Freeman's distinct baritone voice utter that haunting phrase: "Get busy living, or get busy dying."

Or is Karl Rove at the wheel? Or no one? Whomever, he didn’t want to jump back into Bush’s Justice Jalopy."

She's not an anti-revolutionary, period.  If Iran wants to send a signal to the expatriate community there are allot of better, more constructive and less ridiculous ways to do so.  It would be a good humanitarian gesture if the officials in charge of her prosecution could see their way clear to releasing her.  If any errors were accidentally committed, if she strayed over the line of what Iranian officials consider acceptable, perhaps a stern admonishment would be considered reasonable? A fine? Something a little less harsh? - mpg
