Beyond Here Lies Nothing: Surging Further Into the Abyss
Must Read - Obama™ Update -- A quote...."The political class has failed us. At every level, they have failed us. Republican and Democrat, they have failed us. Liberal, conservative and centrist, they have failed us. They have lived on lies, and lived by lies, for so long that they no longer know how to comprehend the truth, much less communicate it or – God forbid – act on it. And so they plow on deeper into the darkness, in zombified pursuit of pointless goals, heedless of the signposts warning of danger, like some demented wagon train dragging a load of dead mules toward the edge of a cliff. Beware Those Treacherous Afpakis
Must Read - Obama™ Update -- A quote...." President Barack Obama has now taken full ownership of the Afghanistan War. Gone are Washington’s pretenses that a western "coalition" was waging this conflict. Gone, too, is the comic book term, "war on terrorism," replaced by the Orwellian sobriquet, "overseas contingency operations." -- Obama’s announcement last week of deeper US involvement in Afghanistan and Pakistan – now officially known in Washington as "Afpak" – was accompanied by a preliminary media bombardment of Pakistan for failing to be sufficiently responsive in advancing US strategic plans." -- also posted at EricMargolis

Neoconservatism: The Return - A new incarnation, a new name – and the same old warmongering
Must Read - Obama™ Update -- A quote...."It was a neocon moment: there they were, the organizers of the Foreign Policy Initiative, the new neoconservative think-tank – Bill Kristol, Dan Senor, and Robert Kagan, with Clifford May, Randy Scheunemann, and junior neocon James Kirchick in tow. It was the occasion of FPI’s first public event – their Washington coming out party, so to speak – and who should show up but I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby. A more fitting symbol of the neoconservative tendency in American politics – its history, its methods, and its essential criminality – could hardly be conceived. -- While John McCain was ostensibly the main attraction, the real focus of the conference was a celebration of the man who defeated him. As David Weigel put it, the FPI conference turned into a "Neocons for Obama" festival, as super-hawkish foreign policy maven Fred Kagan hailed President Obama’s Af-Pak offensive as the best thing since the Iraqi "surge":" -- One wonders how all those starry-eyed, anti-war, Obamatrolls feel now that they've been completely and utterly betrayed? Time for change - President Obama and the Powers Behind the Throne
Must Read - Obama™ Update -- A quote...."The more important question with respect to this post is, What is President Obama’s relationship the shadowy powers that we speak of? Has he actually negotiated with them? Have they made it clear to him that his continuance in office depends on his satisfying their demands? Have they threatened him? I can’t answer any of those questions, and I very much doubt that there are many who could. But it certainly seems that he has done a lot to placate some very powerful people. Let’s take look at some of those things:"

Procuring Academics for Empire: The Pentagon Minerva Research Initiative
Must Read - A quote...."The Pentagon’s military strategists have recognized that they have suffered political losses, with strategic consequences in their recent military invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. US military support for the Israeli invasions of Lebanon and Gaza, the US-sponsored Ethiopian occupation of Somali, the coup attempts in Venezuela (2002) and Bolivia (2008), have also failed to defeat popular incumbent regimes. Worse still, civilian, family, community and national networks have reinforced the anti-colonial movements providing essential logistical support, intelligence, recruits and legitimacy." -- also posted at PalestineChron

Neo-Cons and Moral Degeneracy
A quote...."The presidential advisor for press affairs to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has an interesting op-ed in the Los Angeles Times today. Pointing out that Barack Obama’s offer to talk to the Iranian regime is nice, Ali Akbar Javanfekr pointed out that words alone are insufficient, especially if the U.S. government persists in conducting an aggressive and interventionist foreign policy. -- Javanfekr specifically pointed to (1) the U.S. government’s surreptitious 1953 coup in which it ousted the democratically elected prime minister of Iran, Mohammed Mossadegh, from office and installed a cruel and brutal Iranian U.S. puppet in his stead, who proceeded to terrorize and torture the Iranian people for the next 25 years, with the support of the U.S. government; and (2) the U.S. government supported Saddam Hussein in his war of aggression against Iran, a war which caused the deaths of one million Iranian people. Vow to fight raises question: How long will Iraq's calm last?
A quote...."In America, the U.S. "surge" of additional troops to Baghdad is heralded as a success, and President Barack Obama has said he'll draw down American forces in Iraq and turn his attention to Afghanistan and Pakistan. In Iraq, however, what the U.S.-led invasion and occupation started is far from over. -- Most Iraqis think that today's lower level of violence is the eye, not the end, of the storm, and that the decisive power struggles are just beginning. The U.S.-backed Iraqi government is widely regarded as an undeserving group of exiles who returned to Iraq on the backs of American tanks." -- Perhaps....but after awhile people get really tired of being tortured or killed.  After helping to end the lives of over a million Iraqis, displacing five million more, while causing almost unlimited destruction to the country's economy and infrastructure, all this taking place after ten years of brutal sanctions which may have contributed to the deaths of over half a million Iraqi children, in a nation of just twenty seven million people, the US-NRE may have finally succeeded in subjugating Iraq as it did when it colonized the Philippines in 1913.  So we should all hail the “success” of the New Roman Empire. – mpg

U-20: Will the Global Economy Resurface?
If they de-couple from the US-NRE's ceaseless attempts to remake itself into the New Roman Empire....perhaps. - mpg -- A quote...."The Group of 20 (G20) is making a big show of getting together to come to grips with the global economic crisis. But here's the problem with the upcoming summit in London on April 2: It's all show. What the show masks is a very deep worry and fear among the global elite that it really doesn't know the direction in which the world economy is heading and the measures needed to stabilize it. -- The latest statistics are exceeding even the gloomiest projections made earlier. Kafka Era Double Standard
A quote...."The U.S. political class and those of the EU and the new “hope” and “change” leader of the United States, Barack Obama, justify Israel’s attack on Gaza as based on its “right of self-defense.” There is, of course, the question of whether it is acceptable to defend yourself by a massive attack on a civilian population when this is not the only route to self defense—the Israelis could withdraw from an illegal occupation, they could stop starving the Gaza population, and they could abide by negotiated ceasefires (in this case, effectively and almost surely deliberately ended by their November 6 killing of six Gaza Palestinians)."

Not an Analogy: Israel and the Crime of Apartheid
A quote...."In recent years, increasing numbers of people around the world have begun adopting and developing an analysis of Israel as an apartheid  regime. (1) This can be seen in the ways that the global movement in support of the Palestinian anti-colonial struggle is taking on a pointedly anti-apartheid character, as evidenced by the growth of Israeli Apartheid Week.(2) Further, much of the recent international diplomatic support for Israel has increasingly taken on the form of denying that racial discrimination is a root cause of the oppression of Palestinians, something that has taken on new levels of absurdity in Western responses to the April 2009 Durban Review Conference.(3)"

News from the front: Bank losses spreading
Financial Alert - A quote...."Last Friday, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency reported that for the first time in history commercial US banks have suffered a $3.4 billion quarterly loss in a giant sector that they thought, until now, was solid: that is, bets on interest rates. The loss was more than seven times worse than their previous quarterly loss in that category. - Of the total derivatives loss, only 7.8 percent was in credit default swaps, the instrument that brought down AIG. Notably, 82 percent of total losses were in interest rate derivatives, the solid category. The remainder is in “other.” U.S. banks, alone, control $204 trillion in derivatives today. A quote...."The Obama $787 billion fiscal stimulus bill designed to resurrect the non-financial economy—now in virtual freefall—provides only $180 billion in total spending in 2009. Only $26 billion of that is allocated for job spending, according to the U.S. Congressional Budget Office.  New jobs created in 2009, given that level of spending, will result in new job creation in the low hundred thousands at best, while simultaneously a minimum of 5-7 million new unemployed will be added to the jobless rolls in 2009.  That’s less than a half-million new jobs compared to thirteen million new unemployed since the current Epic Recession began in late 2007. -- One thing is thus quite clear about the Obama fiscal stimulus plan: it is not a jobs creation program. It is not designed to create anything near the number of jobs that have been, are currently being, and will soon continue to be, lost." - bold by website editor

Does US Face G20 Mutiny? - Financing the Empire

The night after Obama’s 60 Minutes appearance, Rachel Maddow interviewed Jonathan Turley, professor of Constitutional Law at George Washington Law School, regarding President Obama’s inconsistent -- and illegal -- stance on Bush administration war crimes. -- As Turley points out, torture is not a matter of “policy” -- it is a matter of law. Cheney and other members of the Bush administration did not just pursue bad policy, they broke the law, both U.S. and international. -- Turley states, “It is just as bad to prevent the investigation and prosecution of a war crime as its commission because you become part of it. [i.e. an accessory] “ He later remarks....

“This is the most well-defined and publicly known crime I have seen in my lifetime. There is no debate about it. There is no ambiguity. It is well known. You‘ve got people involved who have basically admitted the elements of a war crime that we are committed to prosecuting. We don‘t need a truth and reconciliation commission because we are already reconciled to the rule of law. There is nothing to reconcile to. What the people have to reconcile are the people who broke the law. They need to reconcile with the law. The Maniacs at MIAC
Must Read - A quote...."Reading "The Modern Militia Movement," the document from the Missouri Information Analysis Center that conflates constitutionalists with Neo-Nazis, I was reminded of a scene in The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail. When poor Henry David’s civil disobedience finally lands him behind bars, Ralph Waldo Emerson ruefully asks, "Henry!... What are you doing in jail?" To which Thoreau famously responds, "Waldo! What are you doing out of jail?" -- Likewise, if your beliefs aren’t libeled in MIAC’s risible report … well, Waldo, why not? Those of the Founding Fathers certainly are."

Connecting the Dots: Come join the New World Order! Pull some strings for Israel! But ignore those lights in the sky!

War, greed, plague and destruction marked the end of the Roman imperial adventure. Today's empire looks set to meet a fate essentially the same. Lexicon of Resistance
An example -- "Palestine- [def.] a piece of land on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. For many years Palestine was the home of the Palestinian people: Muslims, Christians and Jews who lived in peace and harmony for hundred of years. In the late 19th century, in the light of emerging European nationalism, a few Jews had decided that Jews should not be left out. They then invented the notions of: "Jewish people", "Jewish history" and "Jewish nationalism".  They decided to settle the majority of world Jewry in Palestine. Throughout the years the Jewish national project, i.e., Zionism, had become more and more sinister and ruthless. In 1949 70% of the indigenous Palestinian population had already been ethnically cleansed. Nowadays the majority of Palestinians are living behind barbed wire in a state of terror guarded by Israeli soldiers."

America and Bush were the most hated words in world vocabulary. However, Obama’s public address today over his plans for Afghanistan and Pakistan, have dampened the hope for any change for the better. Obama asked a question: why US was in Afghanistan? His own answer to that simple question was as convincing about the presence of Al Qaida in Afghanistan and Tribal areas of Pakistan as Bush allegation of WMD in Iraq. Bush was not able to fool the world over his simplistic harangue over Sadaam’s non existent Weapons of Mass Destruction. Obama himself does not appear to be convinced of the Al Qaida menace, while enunciating his plan to tackle terrorism that 'threatens’ US and its allied countries in the world. The incident was an accident waiting to happen, so to say, given the players involved. Apparently, a group of right-wing Israelis had received approval from Israel's High Court to march within the municipal borders of Um Al Fahm but not inside the city. While the actual intent of the march still remains unclear, it seems Israel's right-wingers – many of them settlers living in Hebron – want to force Israel's Arab-Palestinian residents to express their "loyalty to the state."

Detainee's Harsh Treatment Foiled No Plots
Must Read - (For the futility of it all) -- A quote...."Waterboarding, Rough Interrogation of Abu Zubaida Produced False Leads, Officials Say"

Let's see, thousands of experts and hundreds of thousands of bloggers repeatedly stated for years that torture doesn't work, it's ineffective, it violates numerous treaties this nation has signed, it's illegal, it's immoral, it simply creates more resentment throughout the Middle East, it allows more "terrorists" to be recruited worldwide and many other counter productive effects. -- What many of them didn't say but which this website author is perfectly willing to say is the following....

A word to the wise for all those in the US military participating in these "interrogations" and "trials", if ANY of the evidence being withheld or altered indicates US government complicity with 9/11, or would support or imply in any way such a suspicion....all personnel who have cooperated in withholding or altering such evidence would automatically become an accessory after the fact in the murder of three thousand Americans.

More importantly, tainting such evidence, creating any evidence, suborning perjury or extracting false confessions from prisoners even if it DOES NOT DIRECTLY INVOLVE U.S. government or administration official’s complicity regarding 9/11...IN AND OF ITSELF could be legally construed as obstruction of justice and possibly make someone an accessory after the fact regarding 9/11 if it prevents the identification of the true perpetrators or the facts involved. -- Quoted from - The Convenient Silence of Guantanamo Bay - 05-31-08 - mpg

He went to work at age 40 as a maintenance man at the post office for about $15,000/yr. All together his income wasn't more than $22,000/yr. My father bought our house for $18,000 on a 15-year bank note. It was on a quarter-acre lot and had: 3 bedrooms, a living room, a Florida room (this was in Clearwater, Fl), a den, a full kitchen and dining room, a large back patio and a garage. We took a family vacation every summer. And I mean cool vacations: visiting relatives up north, Disney, Sea World, Cape Kennedy, even Las Vegas one summer! We had 2 cars: my mom drove a Ford Granada and my father a Ford Pinto. My father played golf every weekend. He always had a boat; he loved to fish. -- Where has that life gone? Britain responds to the "rule of law" nuisance

Obama Economic Program Increases America's Bondage to Wall Street Billionaires
Obama™ Update -- A quote...."When is anyone in authority going to utter the unutterable, which is that our financial collapse ultimately goes back to the fact that every dollar in circulation derives from a loan made by a bank to a producer, consumer, or the government, and that all these loans have attached to them a rental charge known as interest which is paid to the bankers' monopoly? When will someone admit that the government's economic recovery plan is a welfare program for Wall Street billionaires? -- We live and work under a debt-based monetary system that has been in force since Congress passed the Federal Reserve Act of 1913.  It's how the system works. The government goes into debt, and the banking system then uses it as a reserve base for lending to the public. "

Perceived mistakes by crewmembers are punished with "agonizers," Taser-like miniature zappers applied to the chest just above the heart. Disloyal crewmembers are tortured to extract confessions, or simply slowly tortured to death, by being placed in "the agony booth." The booth is the ultimate "stress position," without all the inconvenience of shackles or the messiness of waterboarding. The Dance of the Trillions to Shore up Banks, Bankers, and Gamblers
If anybody out there wonders why this website editor continues to pound the issue of derivatives, it's because it's necessary to follow two simple rules when analyzing the "Great Game" and the elites who "play" it.

One: Is to ALWAYS "follow the money", no excuses, no exceptions, no matter what. If you're not following the money, you're not doing your job; something this nation's mass-faux-infotainment industry has gotten down to a fine art these last thirty years.

Two: If it's something critical to the issue, something that "connects the dots",  something blatantly obvious, yet NOBODY employed in any official capacity or anybody in the mass-media wants to talk about it....you talk about it, write about it, SCREAM about it until they do. (Also known as the "Pink Elephant" in the middle of the living room scenario) – mpg

A quote...."After ten years of wholesale financial deregulation, bad policies and unsound banking practices, and facing a worsening recession, over the last year and a half the U.S. government has been pumping trillions of dollars in order to deleverage and recapitalize banks that were on the brink of insolvency. But the banking crisis is of such a magnitude, and the damage done to the financial system so widespread, that each pumping of money into the system has never seemed to be enough. This is because numerous American financial institutions, and among the largest, have suffered multibillion-dollar losses, not only with subprime mortgages, but especially with large amounts of derivative products that have turned sour. Not the least of these are the famous gambling products called credit default swaps, (CDS), [which the Bank of International Settlements is reporting to be worth some $57 trillion." -- Editor's Note: The total value of derivatives out there has been estimated to be well over one Quadrillion. - mpg

Building on a weak foundation
Special Note - A quote...."With a series of coordinated pronouncements and media events, the Barack Obama administration has been trying to send a signal to investors. The message received may not have been the one intended. -- Reading between the lines, the administration is indicating that the financial crisis has become so overwhelming to them that there is no alternative but to throw infinite amounts of taxpayer money at it until, they hope, it passes. But what if the very measures meant to hold the dike until the storm passes are actually undermining whatever protection we have left?"

The Threat of Hyper-Depression

The idea was that the Federal Reserve could cure a recession by printing money, or that the Fed could cure runaway inflation by jacking up interest rates. Each of these moves had its downside, of course, but the point was that the Fed could choose one poison or the other. -- This Keynesian orthodoxy was shattered in the 1970s when the United States suffered through “stagflation,” which was high unemployment and high inflation. This outcome was not supposed to be possible, according to the popular macroeconomics models, and it left policy makers with no clear choice."

A quote...."Who ever thought that Canadian politics could be so interesting? First there was the attempted coup last December, when the fractious opposition Liberals, socialists and separatists stunned the nation and joined together, almost ousting the ruling Conservatives. Now the intrepid British MP George Galloway, fresh from bringing the walls of Gaza tumbling down, is launching a land invasion of Canada from the US in a replay of the war of 1812." -- also posted at Creaitive-i & OnlineJournal

Women’s Co-op in Hebron
A quote...."The city of Hebron is one of the most aggressive cities in the West Bank in terms of the relationship between the Palestinians and the Israeli settlers living there. The settlers along with the Israeli military have taken over the Old City—and this has had a very big impact on the lives of the Palestinians because the market is in the Old City."

Bernanke's Hammer
Must Read - A quote...."If you only have a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. ---  And so it is with Ben Bernanke, Timothy Geithner, Henry Paulson, the entire East Coast financial establishment, innumerable Ivy League economists including Paul Krugman, and people who really should know better, like the media, Congress and the President.  ---  Truly mindless fuzz continues to flow out of Washington, accepted as gospel by both its inhabitants and the media. For example, there’s the idea that the worldwide financial crisis can only be solved by the same institutions and people that created it; that the banking sector needs lots and lots of additional money and political support to solve problems that trillions of dollars so far have not; that months of nonexistent positive results means only that we haven’t handed financiers sufficient loot; that the failure to bail out Lehman’s is what caused this whole mess; that reinvigorating casino capitalism is the way out of the dilemma; that public outrage shows that the rest of us just don’t get it."

WPost Elitists Feel for Wall St. Brethren - posted at ConsortiumNews
A quote...."One interesting trait of elitists is that they show remarkable class solidarity, often more so than people of lesser means. Which may help explain why the Washington Post’s editorial writers penned three editorials last week decrying the populist outrage over the AIG bonuses."

The Truth About the SubPrime Mortgage Scandal
A quote...."It's one of the most amazing displays of journalistic incompetence and malpractice in recent memory. The US news media failed to draw the obvious connection between the bizarre federal law enforcement investigation and leak campaign about the private life of New York Governor Spitzer, and Spitzer's all out attack on the Bush administration for its collusion with predatory lenders"

PJB: The Weimar Solution -- The Fed's gonna try....and they're gonna fail. - mpg
Must Read - A quote...."The best way to destroy the capitalist system is to debauch the currency,” said Lord Keynes. -- Ben Bernanke disagrees. A student of the Depression, the Fed chair appears far more fearful of deflation — a vicious cycle of falling prices, debt defaults, home foreclosures and rising unemployment."

Massive cash injection into U.S. economy may inhibit world recovery
Special Note - Interesting quote...."Given the prevailing liquidity panic in the United States, the U.S. government's effort to inject liquidity into the economy by all means is understandable. However, this effort is likely to be in vain as long as predictions for the U.S. market remain pessimistic. In this situation, banks and financial institutions in the U.S. tend to take advantage of the liquidity injected by the government to raise their lending interest or the rates of return for corporate loans to make up for possible future losses from insufficient liquidity. This will give rise to a huge liquidity trap that will render the government's cash injections - however huge - useless."

CREDIT MARKETS: Weak Auction Offsets Fed Tsys Purchases
Financial Alert - A quote...." Failed U.K. bond auction sends ripples through market
Financial Alert - A quote...."LONDON: Britain suffered its first failed government bond auction since 2002 on Wednesday after bids fell more than £100 million short of the sale of £1.75 billion in securities, temporarily sending prices tumbling. -- The country’s Debt Management Office could not find enough bidders for the 2049 gilt at an auction where there would usually be heavy demand from pension funds and insurers. The result was unsold bonds valued at more than $145 million."

Get Set for a 15-Year Depression
A quote...." Our old friend Congressman Ron Paul says we’re headed into a 15-year depression. -- He’s probably right. In the old days, “panics” and “depressions” ended fairly quickly…at least unemployment tended to be short-term. There were no elaborate social welfare systems then. No unemployment compensation. No food stamps or “independence” cards. People had to make do. -- So, when a depression hit, wages fell quickly and people got back to work. They earned less, but the whole economy would adjust, with lower prices for everything."

Credit Default Swaps ‘Godfather’ Says Blow ‘Em All Up’
Special Note - A quote...."Myron Scholes, the creator of the infamous Black-Scholes model for pricing derivatives which won the Nobel Prize and then almost destroyed the world banking system with the Long Term Capital Management bankruptcy of 1998, has now partially understood that his derivative creations are a Frankenstein monster. He recommends wiping out the current crop of toxic cds derivatives. The only hope of world economic recovery is indeed by wiping out, freezing, deleting, shredding, and otherwise destroying ALL of the $1.5 quadrillion derivatives bubble. Otherwise, the London G-20 will repeat the failure of the Juny 1932 Lausanne conference, which needed to wipe out reparations and war debts left over from World War I in order to end the First World Depression. To end the Second World Depression, wipe out and permanently ban derivatives now! - Webster Tarpley" - bold by website editor

A quote...."....the San Francisco bank president warned in prepared remarks that "for some time to come, disinflation, and even deflation, will represent greater risks than inflation," predicting economic slack for several more years. -- "We need to be sure that we avoid the kind of deflation that Japan experienced during its lost decade," she cautioned. "While I don't think such an outcome is likely, it should be on our list of concerns."

A little bit of good news -- Some quotes...."WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Demand for machinery and other capital goods rose in February, driving orders for durable goods up 3.4%, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday."

But...."Offsetting the gain in February somewhat was a sharp downward revision to orders in January. - The government said that orders for durable goods fell a revised 7.3% in January, much worse than the previous estimate of a 4.5% decline."

And...."We strongly doubt that the February gains represent anything more than statistical noise in these often volatile data, particularly given that large downward revisions are often associated with ongoing declines," wrote Josh Shapiro, chief U.S. economist at MFR Inc, in a note to clients."

Fractals: The Missing Link?
A quote...."A scientist named Tim Palmer may have just reconciled the worlds of classical and quantum physics - which have until now seemed irreconcilable - using fractals. -- Before launching into Palmer's theory, remember the idea that the geometry of the universe may create its properties has excited scientists for a number of years. For example, Garrett Lisi's E8 theory claiming that the physics of the universe stems from its shape (a 248-dimensional object) made quite a buzz. -- Similarly, some physicists believe that the properties of gravity stem from the geometry of higher dimensions in which gravity is active. And years before, Einstein concluded that gravity was an effect of the space-time geometry through which objects fall."
