Must Read - Obama™ Update -- A quote...."Last week, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates finally put an end to this debate. Gate’s newly announced defense budget makes clear that America’s military future lies in what the Pentagon calls, "expeditionary warfare" or "counterinsurgency operations." Bates denied that President Obama could make suspected "enemy combatants" disappear into the Bagram Theater Internment Facility at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan without an opportunity for exoneration. (Indeed, the Bush administration itself insisted just last year that the U.S. the right to criminally prosecute foreign officials for ordering acts of torture even in the absence of an accusation that any of the victims were American)."

US troops 'might stay in N Iraq'
In the past several years there have been thousands of articles about troop withdrawals, draw-downs, pull backs, and partial pull outs from Iraq....every single one of them have been absolutely wrong.  On the other hand for the past several years there have also been thousands of articles about troop increases, surges, re-branding combat troops as “advisors” and endless extensions of the "pull-out" date from Iraq...and every single one of those articles has been absolutely right.  Everyone out there got the point....yet? – mpg -- A quote...."US combat troops may stay in northern Iraq after a deadline for them to pull back by the end of June has passed, the top US commander in the area has said."

It was learnt that around 50 men, armed with AK-47 rifles and rocket launchers, attacked the Asim Terminal after overpowering watchman Fazal Akbar around 1:45 am. War, Oil and Gas Pipelines: Turkey is Washington’s Geopolitical Pivot

Must Read - A quote...."If Ankara decides to collaborate more closely with Russia, Georgia's position is precarious and Azerbaijan's natural gas pipeline route to Europe, the so-called Nabucco Pipeline, is blocked. If it cooperates with the United States and manages to reach a stable treaty with Armenia under US auspices, the Russian position in the Caucasus is weakened and an alternative route for natural gas to Europe opens up, decreasing Russian leverage against Europe. - For Washington the key to bringing Germany into closer cooperation with the US is to weaken German dependence on Russian energy flows. Twice in the past three winters Washington has covertly incited its hand-picked President in Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko to arrange an arbitrary cut off of Russian gas flows to Germany and other EU destinations. The only purpose of the actions was to convince EU governments that Russia was not a reliable energy partner. Now, with the Obama visit to Ankara, Washington is attempting to win Turkish support for its troubled Nabucco alternative gas pipeline through Turkey from Azerbaijan which would theoretically at least lessen EU dependence on Russian gas."

U.S. producer price index falls in March - Deflation indication #1

U.S. Retail Sales Unexpectedly Drop as Jobs Evaporate (Update2) - Deflation indication #3

April 14 (Bloomberg) -- Retail sales in the U.S. unexpectedly fell in March as soaring job losses forced consumers to pull back. - The 1.1 percent decrease followed a 0.3 percent gain in February that was stronger than previously estimated, the Commerce Department said today in Washington. America’s 20% Unemployment Rate - Article also posted at ICH - Deflation indication #4

This lower rate is used to prove that America’s economic system is superior to those in Europe. Their higher unemployment rates are blamed on unions and socialism, which guarantee workers health care and paid vacations. The implication is that while many American workers lack such benefits, at least they have jobs. This argument is faulty since unemployment is measured differently."

U.S. business inventories fall 1.3% in February
- Deflation indication #5 (if due to business cutbacks) - mpg
WASHINGTON, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Inventories held by U.S. businesses on shelves and backlots fell 1.3 percent in February, marking the sixth straight monthly decline, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday. - The 1.3 percent drop in business inventories matched the January decline and close to the 1.2 percent fall that economists had expected. - The sixth consecutive decline is the longest stretch since the country's businesses cut their stockpiles for 15 straight months ending in April 2002, a period that covered the last recession." -- The last "recession" had fifteen months of inventory decline, this one has had only six months so far. - mpg

Perhaps we should all cover the numbers again.  At the height of the '82 recession this country's official unemployment rate reached almost 12%, there were over eight hundred bank failures and the housing market declined for about two, to two and a half years during the slump. -- So far during this "recession" the country has experienced an unemployment rate of just 8.5%, only fifty to sixty (official) bank failures and about a year and a half worth of housing decline.  Given the deflation indications shown above, and this nation's prior economic record, it appears the economy has now entered a "liquidity trap" or a severe recession, or even possible depression, which will not bottom out for another one to two years.

In otherwords there is a lot more economic contraction to come. - mpg

Obama and habeas corpus -- then and now
Special Note - Obama™ Update -- A quote...."It was once the case under the Bush administration that the U.S. would abduct people from around the world, accuse them of being Terrorists, ship them to Guantanamo, and then keep them there for as long as we wanted without offering them any real due process to contest the accusations against them.  That due-process-denying framework was legalized by the Military Commissions Act of 2006.  Many Democrats -- including Barack Obama -- claimed they were vehemently opposed to this denial of due process for detainees, and on June 12, 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court, in the case of Boumediene v. Bush, ruled that the denial of habeas corpus rights to Guantanamo detainees was unconstitutional and that all Guantanamo detainees have the right to a full hearing in which they can contest the accusations against them." -- also posted at CommonDreams

The Art of the Scam - Wall Street and the Pentagon

A quote...."Bill Moyers conducted a fantastic interview with Professor Bill Black, a specialist in securities fraud, on April 3 (Listen to the podcast here) and read Moyers' analysis of this interview in CounterPunch. I found the interview fascinating, because the scam in the banking industry is so similar to the scam in the Pentagon, only the scale of the fraud perpetrated by the bankers made the milcrats in the Pentagon look like pikers. -- At the heart of both scams is the deliberate corruption of information on such a vast scale that it overwhelms the mind of the educated layman to make sense out of it."

Panetta, a Clinton retread (who actually began his career in the Nixon administration), has always been a bland, feckless, obedient servant of the Establishment; he has no outside power base, no pull, no heft, no popularity -- nothing that would enable him to grab hold of the CIA with both hands and clean that fetid, blood-encrusted house. Who is behind Moldova's Twitter Revolution?
Special Note - A quote....""A lot of what we [National Endowment for Democracy] do today was done covertly 25 years ago by the CIA." -Allen Weinstein -- It seems that those who anticipated the end of color revolutions have been proven wrong. So far, color revolutions have succeeded in Serbia, Georgia, Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan. On the other hand, they have failed in Belarus, Uzbekistan and Myanmar. Their common denominator is a wave of protests and sometimes riots whose purpose is to overthrow a local government, often held during electoral times or shortly afterwards. It has not gone unnoticed that the so called color revolutions have been backed (and engineered?) by enthusiastic western supporters including NGO's, diplomats, businessmen, governmental institutions and heads of state. In those countries where such political mobilizations have prevailed, pro-Western leaders have been enthroned as a result thereof. If one pays close attention to a map, it is impossible not to wonder if it is simply a coincidence that color revolutions have erupted in countries close to Russian and Chinese borders. It has to be pointed out that no color revolution has ever occurred in any country whose government is staunchly pro-Western."

A Timeline of CIA Atrocities
Special Note - A quote...."The following timeline describes just a few of the hundreds of atrocities and crimes committed by the CIA. (1) -- CIA operations follow the same recurring script. First, American business interests abroad are threatened by a popular or democratically elected leader. The people support their leader because he intends to conduct land reform, strengthen unions, redistribute wealth, nationalize foreign-owned industry, and regulate business to protect workers, consumers and the environment. So, on behalf of American business, and often with their help, the CIA mobilizes the opposition. First it identifies right-wing groups within the country (usually the military), and offers them a deal: “We’ll put you in power if you maintain a favorable business climate for us.” The Agency then hires, trains and works with them to overthrow the existing government (usually a democracy). It uses every trick in the book: propaganda, stuffed ballot boxes, purchased elections, extortion, blackmail, sexual intrigue, false stories about opponents in the local media, infiltration and disruption of opposing political parties, kidnapping, beating, torture, intimidation, economic sabotage, death squads and even assassination."

Obama and the Banks By Joseph Halevi
A quote...."If we take a look at the recent self-described progressive US presidents (Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton), we will notice that their progressiveness invariably fades away, not even intentionally.  That is because the beast compels them to align themselves with its own reality.  Carter, who campaigned against the wage stagnation of the Nixon-Ford years, collapsed in the face of the anti-inflationary policy inaugurated by the Federal Reserve under Paul Volcker in 1979.  That policy opened the door to the financialization of the economy and the weakening of the labor market on which the Reagan presidency rested.  Bill Clinton’s capitulation came with the abandonment of the health care reform and the deregulation of both communications and banking rules.  The very people who implemented the latter are at the heart of the Obama administration.  They are the proconsuls of the beast.  For instance, Larry Summers, when he was in the Clinton administration, opposed all calls to regulate the trafficking of financial derivatives.  Today Summers and Geithner are getting Obama to capitulate on the issue of capitalization of the banks in crisis."

The Economic Crisis: No, this will not be a Normal Cyclical Recovery

His findings, reported in his book,  “Expert Political Judgment,” are that, on average, the expert's predictions were only bit better than random guessing would have been. He writes, “It made virtually no difference whether participants had doctorates, whether they were economists, political scientists, journalists or historians, whether they had policy experience or access to classified information, or whether they had logged many or few years of experience.” The only consistent attribute was fame, and the relationship was inverse. The more famous experts made worse predictions than the unknown forecasters did. Dean Baker."

Light at the End of the Tunnel? Wrong! -- The Decade of Darkness

No one expected the financial earthquake to shake this hard or ripple this fast. The failure at Bear triggered a shock in the secondary market where mortgage loans are repackaged into securities and sold to investors. That market is now completely paralyzed cutting off 40 percent of funding for consumer and business loans and thrusting the broader economy into a deep recession. Banks and financial institutions have been forced to curtail their off-balance sheet operations and build their reserves which have ballooned from $45 billion to nearly $700 billion in the last 6 months alone. Like millions of homeowners who have seen their home equity vanish and their retirement savings slashed in half, the banks are hunkering down, hoping they can outlast the deflationary hurricane ahead."

The Emperor's new clothes: Mr Change's recent European trip

In fact, his tailors had fooled him and used the money they received for anything but the promised delicate materials. They just pretended to be cutting, sewing and adjusting imaginary fabrics. Thus the emperor went on parade stark naked, with the entire court pretending to admire his clothes. The populace was stunned to see their respected ruler in the buff, but nobody dared to admit what he was seeing. Except for this little boy who exclaimed the emperor went around naked. Only then did the crowd dare to say that, indeed, it was seeing a crowned, but naked man, instead of their emperor dressed in full sartorial splendor."

Another --said to have killed the President --is likewise attributed to the single shooter in the famous sixth floor window of the Texas School Book Depository."

Internet Rankings are Massively Gamed

A quote...."Alexa is the most popular free website ranking service. It has been described as "a Nielson rating for the popularity of the website you are visiting." - With a higher Alexa rank, more people will be attracted to reading your website (on the theory that if its a popular site, it must be good), and advertisers will be more interested in paying to run ads on your site. - Those in the know have realized for some time that Alexa isn't perfectly accurate."

A convoy of hundreds of medical and food trucks heading to Gaza soon
Action Alert - A quote...."It’s now three years since Israel imposed this tight and deadly siege on Gaza. The brutal siege is devastating every aspect of life in Gaza. Thousands of families continue to suffer, while many others are dying due to the lack of basic treatment and medical equipment. The basic infrastructure supplying water, power and sanitation is in devastation making life unbearable for the 1.5 million inhabitants, which further compounds the misery of the people. The war totally destroyed what was left from the siege. Thousands were killed and injured and thousands turned disabled."

Archbishop says pending report to show Irish priests abused 'thousands' of children

A quote...."At a Thursday mass in Dublin's Pro-Cathedral, an Irish Archbishop shocked his congregation, which included numerous priests, by exclaiming that a forthcoming investigative report will reveal that over three decades, Irish Catholic priests have abused "thousands" of children. -- "[The report] will make us and the entire church a humbler church," he said." - also posted at RogueGov -- For more on this issue see.....

Catholic church paid 436 mln dlrs for abuse cases - [in 2008]
A quote...."The US Roman Catholic church has paid out 436 million dollars in 2008 for sex abuse cases involving clergy members, according to an official report aimed at healing deep wounds of the scandal that blew up in 2002" -- "The sums paid out in settlement had fallen 29 percent compared with the record 526 million dollars paid in 2007, the report showed." -- Wow! Guess they're making real progress then, hey? This is utterly UNACCEPTABLE, this website editor isn't Catholic, so those who are can take this advice for whatever it's worth to them, but it does appear that it's high time the Catholic Church allow their priests, and in fact better yet, insists that their priests, establish families and practice what they preach and ask those priests of any other persuasion - or predilection - to kindly leave.  Just a suggestion. – mpg -- posted 03-13-09

Tyler Durden on Quant Dynamics
Must Read - Market Tech Note - A quote...."Given that I frequently lambast credit default swaps, you might be surprised to see me sing the praises of a CDS trader. -- But Tyler Durden of ZeroHedge - whose day job was as a CDS trader - is well worth reading. Durden is sharp as a tack, has access to technical info, and has good industry contacts. --  SeekingAlpha and NakedCapitalism have started running Durden's blogs, and now even Nouriel Roubini is linking to Durden's blog entitled "The Incredibly Shrinking Market Liquidity, Or The Upcoming Black Swan Of Black Swans".

A Game of Credit Cost Smoke and Mirrors at Wells Fargo?
A quote...."Wells Fargo & Co. (WFC: 19.61 +31.70%) managed to bring some holiday cheer into financial markets Wednesday, just ahead of the Easter holiday, with its pronouncement that it expects to post a record quarterly net income of $3 billion — or 55 cents per share — when it officially reports Q1 2009 earnings later this month. But more than a few voices are already questioning the results, warning that this quarter’s big gain is more likely to be a flash in the pan than a market turning point"

You Know Things Are Bad When Even Newsweek Is Slamming the Obama Administration for Caving in to the Financial Status Quo -- Obama™ Update -- Some quotes...."You know things are bad when even one of the most mainstream publications - Newsweek - is slamming the Obama administration for caving to the financial status quo, and sounding the same themes that I and other "alternative" writers have been shouting into the wind about for many months." -- "Newsweek writer Michael Hersh writes:

Major Wall Street players are digging in against fundamental changes. And while it clearly wants to install serious supervision, the Obama administration—along with other key authorities like the New York Fed—appears willing to stand back while Wall Street resurrects much of the ultracomplex global trading system that helped lead to the worst financial collapse since the Depression.

Economy
A quote...."To date I have twice been robbed of lots of money (or what seemed like lots of money). The first theft occurred overseas when I was at a dinner party. Someone must have seen me at the bank withdrawing cash, and followed me home. Later that night the same someone crawled through an unlocked window and headed straight for the bank envelope. The moral was plain (not that I mastered it) – lock your house and don’t be an ass. The latest theft occurred in my native country. I learned about it when a piece of paper arrived suggesting that my "investments" were melting like cotton candy in a squall."

The Law of Unintended Consequences

A quote...."The mongoose was introduced to Hawaii in order to control the rats (which were eating the sugar cane used to make rum). It didn't work out very well - mongeese are daylight-loving creatures while rats are nocturnal - and the mongeese trashed the native species in Hawaii. -- Likewise, the U.S. government has subsidized ethanol production for years. But the Congressional Budget Office says this week that increased ethanol use is responsible for about 10 to 15 percent of the rise in food prices from 2007 to 2008, and only reduced greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector by less than 1 percent."

Obama's obscene remarks in Iraq
Obama™ Update -- A quote...."It is hard to know where to begin on Obama's remarks in Iraq yesterday during a visit described unnecessarily by our press as a "surprise" since that is the only sort of visit a US President can make to Iraq.  What is more appalling?  The casual obscenity of a US President calling upon a nation that the US has been beating, brutalizing, and raping (that is when not using like a pawn in geo political games) for decades to "take responsibility for itself" or the fact that he has absolutely no idea of how much like a criminal sociopath he sounds when making such remarks?

Keith Olbermann's Scathing Criticism of Obama's Secrecy/Immunity Claims
Obama™ Update -- A quote....April 08, "Salon" -- Several weeks ago, I noted that unlike the Right -- which turned itself into a virtual cult of uncritical reverence for George W. Bush especially during the first several years of his administration -- large numbers of Bush critics have been admirably willing to criticize Obama when he embraces the very policies that prompted so much anger and controversy during the Bush years.  Last night, Keith Olbermann -- who has undoubtedly been one of the most swooning and often-uncritical admirers of Barack Obama of anyone in the country (behavior for which I rather harshly criticized him in the past) -- devoted the first two segments of his show to emphatically lambasting Obama and Eric Holder's DOJ for the story I wrote about on Monday:  namely, the Obama administration's use of the radical Bush/Cheney state secrets doctrine and -- worse still -- a brand new claim of "sovereign immunity" to insist that courts lack the authority to decide whether the Bush administration broke the law in illegally spying on Americans."  --  For a look at the video click here -- Obama™ Update - (YouTube - 4 min 15 sec - April 07, 2009)

Hope Abandoned: Obama Protects and Promotes CIA Torture Mavens

Obama™ Update -- A quote....It was obvious from the moment that Barack Obama appointed Leon Panetta to head the CIA that there was going to be no serious investigation -- much less prosecution -- of the high crimes of torture committed by the agency at the order of the Bush White House. And of course, it was precisely this kind of powerless figure that Barack Obama wanted in the post." -- also posted at CunterPunch

Hero Blues: Liberals Line Up With Militarism

Obama™ Update -- A quote...."In her latest outing, Walsh is transported near to tears by images of the president greeting soldiers during his unannounced visit to Iraq. (Yes, even though the "surge" has been "a success beyond our wildest dreams," as Obama instructed us last year, American leaders still have to creep into the "liberated" land like a thief in the night.) In worshipful tones that one might have heard directed at the president at any point in the previous eight years from, say, National Review Online or Pajamas Media, Walsh gawps in awe at the bonding of the legions with their imperator...."

The fact that service personnel are actually being asked in special briefing sessions whether they would fire on their own nationals indicates that the rumours about the Army being put on standby are indeed very true." -- Paragraph quoted from CLG

And why shouldn’t he be cut in on the loot from the loopholes in the toxic derivatives market that he pushed into law when he was Bill Clinton’s treasury secretary? No one has been more persistently effective in paving the way for the financial swindles that enriched the titans of finance while impoverishing the rest of the world than the man who is now the top economic adviser to President Obama."
