"Uh, the purpose of a wise and mature US foreign policy is to avoid close allies ending up speaking like that. Bush has destroyed half a century of good will among NATO allies, most of whom now think they are better off not following Washington's lead. Leaders who threw in with Bush, like Aznar of Spain and Berlusconi of Italy, have been ushered off the political stage by enraged publics. He’s influenced by the memory of the US-backed attempt to depose him in 2002. The Financial Tsunami: Sub-Prime Mortgage Debt is but the Tip of the Iceberg
Must Read - A quote...."A US Federal Judge, C.A. Boyko in Federal District Court in Cleveland Ohio ruled to dismiss a claim by Deutsche Bank National Trust Company. DB’s US subsidiary was seeking to take possession of 14 homes from Cleveland residents living in them, in order to claim the assets.

"Here comes the hair in the soup. The Judge asked DB to show documents proving legal title to the 14 homes. DB could not. All DB attorneys could show was a document showing only an “intent to convey the rights in the mortgages.” They could not produce the actual mortgage, the heart of Western property rights since the Magna Charta if not longer. - bold/italics by website author

This website editor naively assumed that the bundled mortgages could eventually be traced to, or related to, or correlated with, their underlying physical assets (the houses and properties).  If this ruling is correct and the CDO's and CMO's cannot be matched with the underlying assets than every single bank and institutional investor has an immediate and extremely serious problem.

US steps up plans for military intervention in Pakistan
A quote...."While the Pentagon admits to only about 50 US troops currently stationed in Pakistan as “advisors” to the Pakistani armed forces, that number would swell substantially under the proposed escalation. The Times cites a briefing prepared by the Special Operations Command that claims the beefed-up US forces would not be engaged in “conventional combat” in Pakistan. It quotes unnamed military officials as acknowledging, however, that they “might be involved in strikes against senior militant leaders, under specific conditions.”

A treasure trove of guerrilla documents, according to the NYT, shows that 41% of the foreign jihadis in Iraq come from Saudi Arabia, which is also a major source of funding for them. Another big group comes from Libya, with Yemenis the third largest cohort. There were none from Lebanon, despite constant US accusations of Hizbullah involvement. Of the some 25,000 alleged insurgents in US custody in Iraq, only 390 are foreigners. 4/5s of the Iraqis and nearly all the foreigners are Sunni Arabs. (The US appears to have never captured a Shiite Iranian fighter in Iraq.) The statistics raise the question of why US military officials are always focusing on Iran and Hizbullah so much, when they clearly are not very much of the problem, while never, ever, mentioning the Saudi issue. Crackpot realism is riding high

Despite having developed supreme confidence in their own judgment and a corresponding contempt for other people’s views, they are astonishingly ignorant of many workaday aspects of the world and bewildered in the face of unexpected difficulties. As government leaders responsible for matters of war and peace, they have a tendency to paint themselves into corners of their own making and, then, seeing no way out, to conclude that their only escape lies in dropping bombs on somebody. * The US has 5 percent of the world's population and 25 percent of all prison inmates.

* The US incarceration rate is the world's highest, five to eight times higher than those of other industrialized

* Liberty-obsessed America has a million more prisoners than China, a police state with four times our
   population.

* One third of all black males and 60 percent of black high school dropouts will go to prison at some point in

* African-Americans serve as much time in federal prison for a typical drug offense as whites do for a violent

WOW!  After almost twenty years of continuous support by the US elites and the Department of Defense for every single "terrorist" organization in the Middle East and their strong encouragement for others to support such groups (the Saudi Royals and Pakistan's ISI as examples) the New York Times suddenly decides to report that Saudi Arabia and Libya (two countries the US hasn't decided to bomb yet) are supplying (gasp!) the "terrorists".

This editor guesses there's been at least a hundred thousand articles printed on this issue in the last ten years, a few of them no doubt accidentally included in the Times itself.  One would hope the Time's sudden new found penchant for the facts is not related to the Demo part of the DemoRepub party's expected ascension to political power in this country and their lack of direct ties to the Saudi Royals that the Bushes are well known to enjoy.

One would also hope the Times has not demonstrated such selectivity in reporting on other major issues such as 9/11 for instance.

I wrote about the case previously, among other places, here and here. He is one of 24,000 people being held in Iraq without charges. Yesterday, the U.S. military -- which refused for 19 months to charge him with any crime -- suddenly announced that they were now recommending that he be tried on unspecified charges in an Iraqi court based on allegedly "irrefutable evidence" they now possess."

Petrobras stated it was the first company, “to have drilled, tested and evaluated pre-salt rocks.” I believe the company was referring to the South Atlantic since this has been done in other parts of the world. For instance, there has been sub-salt production in the Gulf of Mexico since the mid nineties. Curveball 2.0: The Proven Liar Leading the Way to War on Iran
A quote...."To hone that headline a bit more finely, we should say that we are speaking here of  one of the proven liars leading us toward a war against Iran. George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Norman "Abnormal" Podhoretz and the rest of the serial dissemblers who strut their ersatz macho across the national stage may get more ink, but the lesser-known Amir Taheri is certainly doing sterling service in sowing the seeds for another outbreak of mass murder by the Potomac Empire, as Jon Schwarz relates at Mother Jones."

That’s the next coup that completes the first. - The last five years have seen a steady assault on every fundamental of our Constitution . . . what the rest of the world looked at for the last 200 years as a model and experiment to the rest of the world—in checks and balances, limited government, Bill of Rights, individual rights protected from majority infringement by the Congress, an independent judiciary, the possibility of impeachment.  --  Daniel Ellsberg

Coup D'État Rumblings in Venezuela

Through FOIA requests, lawyer, activist and author Eva Golinger uncovered top secret CIA documents of US involvement that included an intricate financing scheme involving the quasi-governmental agency, National Endowment of Democracy (NED), and US Agency for International Development (USAID). The documents also showed the White House, State Department and National Security Agency had full knowledge of the scheme, had to have approved it, and there's little doubt of CIA involvement as it's always part of this kind of dirty business. What's worrying now is what went on then may be happening again in what looks like a prelude to a fourth made-in-Washington attempt to oust the Venezuelan leader that must be monitored closely as events develop."

Rain of Terror: Storm Warnings of More Tyranny to Come

Americans: Sheep to the Constitutional Slaughter?
Interview - Reasonline interviews Judge Andrew Napolitano - Related article - A quote...."The Patriot Act seems to be a special bete noire of yours. What's the problem with it?"

"Napolitano: The Patriot Act's two most principle constitutional errors are an assault on the Fourth Amendment, and on the First. It permits federal agents to write their own search warrants [under the name national security letters with no judge having examined evidence and agreed that it's likely that the person or thing the government wants to search will reveal evidence of a crime."

"Remember that the British government permitted its soldiers to execute self-written search warrants. They called them writs of assistance, and they were one of the last straws that caused American colonist to rebel. It's bitterly ironic that 230 years later a popularly elected government would authorize its own agents to do the same thing that when a monarchy did it, we fought a war of rebellion in reaction - "which we won!"

A world dying, but can we unite to save it?

The process thought to be the most profound change in the chemistry of the oceans for 20 million years  is expected both to disrupt the entire web of life of the oceans and to make climate change worse."

Almost three quarters of this planet's ocean species died during the Cretaceous-Tertiary meteorite impact....rapid acidification of the ocean might be why.  Almost all the world's forests burned during the planet wide fall of super hot ejecta from the impact.  Such a large world wide spike in carbon dioxide (not to mention all the other deleterious effects of the impact, including possibly the ejactas's chemical components) may very well have done in much of the ocean's biosphere.
