No Light, Just Tunnel: The Bipartisan Guarantee of Continuing War in Iraq
Must Read - A quote....Most people persist in believing that the Bush Administration has "mishandled" or "bungled" the war in Iraq, when in fact they have achieved almost all of their goals. (A reality that we have examined here, here and here, among other places.) They have vastly enriched their cronies. They have installed a U.S. military presence in Iraq. They have expanded the size, power and scope of the armed forces and the intelligence services (which now have their own secret armies) beyond the wildest dreams of the most hawkish Cold War militarist. They have not only gutted the Constitution but proved that you can get away with it -- an invaluable lesson for dictators to come. And, as noted, they have committed the American Establishment to continuing the radical course they have set in motion -- because the Establishment will never allow the election of any candidate who would seek to institute the rollback of the empire and the restoration of genuine constitutional government. Especially as the latter would entail bringing justice to the war makers and the war profiteers, all of them honored stalwarts of the Establishment."

The Democrats Are Selling Out the Peace Movement - And much of the peace movement is selling out to the Democrats…  Must Read - posted at AntiWar - A quote...."The front-running Hillary is the darling of the neocons these days, partly because of her spat with Obama over what Fred Barnes calls the "would-you-meet-with-despots" question. Our future commander in chief answered "firmly and coolly," says the man who coined the phrase "big government conservatism." "She excels," raves National Review editor Rich Lowry, who says Clinton "has done more than any other Democrat to show she's ready to be president." Neocon bellwether David Brooks' paean to Hillary, the Warrior Goddess, heralds her as "the perfect combination of experience and change." Even Charles Krauthammer, the neocons' resident Cato (the Elder), hailed "the grizzled veteran" Hillary in her alleged victory over "the clueless rookie" Obama in the talk-with-tyrants spat.

Stock Market Brushfire; Will there be a run on the banks? - posted at ICH
A quote...."08/12/07 "ICH" -- - On Friday, the Dow Jone’s clawed its way back from a 200 point deficit to a mere 31 point loss after the Federal Reserve injected $38 billion into the banking system. The Fed had already pumped $24 billion into the system a day earlier after the Dow plummeted 387 points. That brings the Fed’s total commitment to a whopping $62 billion.  -  By some estimates, $326.3 billion has now been added to the G-7 Nations’ intra-banking system to prevent a breakdown. That amount will rise considerably in the weeks ahead as the situation continues to deteriorate. Some readers may remember that on Tuesday, August 7, the Fed announced that it was NOT planning to bail out the market."

UPDATE  :  The Dow Jones, NASDAQ and the S&P 500 indices have double bounced off of, or just above, the 200 day moving average (one year chart) forming a "W" formation, this is about the seventh time they've done so and a chart pattern like this has almost always been followed by a rally.  Such a technical formation along with the contrarian consideration of the increasing pessimism currently in the market would normally be considered a positive development.

However if you were a pessimist at the top of the tulip bulb mania in Holland because your bulbs weren't fetching 300 gilders each, the market had just experienced an upset, rumors were flying about worse to come, and you and everybody else were worried that prices might decline....you, and the rest of the crowd might just be right this time.

It is actually possible at some point during a market's liftime "that debt does matter", or at least becomes an issue.

Because of the massive and obvious intervention by the Fed along with many of the world's other central banks, the highly suspect nature regarding much of the corporate buybacks and merger activities which have artificially pumped up share prices in the last eighteen months, and the impenetrable nature regarding much of the derivatives, CDO's and other newly created synthetic securities out there, this editor no longer considers technical or contrarian indicators to be totally reliable tools in forecasting market trends. In essence there currently is no visibility in this market.

As such Tuesdays 07-24-07 market decent and it's subsequent "rebound" is considered to be complete and no further stock market predictions are possible at this time. - posted 08-12-07 -  mpg

Editors note:  Most probablyTuesday's 07-24-07 market action is part of a correction down to the 200 day moving average on all indices with a rebound thereafter, IF however it is not, and this activity really is the start of a premature and early end to the ten year "credit/contraction" cycle  (this editor thought it would end in 2008) you can expect a major "fortuitous" attack on the US within the next 30 to 90 days given the current up-tempo in War Warnings and War Alerts during the last three weeks.

Therefore if Tuesday's 07-24-07 activity is any indication that this current "ten year cycle" is coming to an end, it should be considered a Red War Warning - mpg  - posted 07-24-07

Goodbye Uncle Sam
Must Read - A quote...."What does it feel like to turn your back on your country? As increasing numbers of US military personnel head for Canada to escape service in Iraq and Afghanistan, three deserters explain what drove them to such drastic action"

Actually they're NOT turning their backs on their country; they're Americans leaving the New Roman Empire, adamantly refusing to become a Neo-Romans themselves.

It's a choice everyone now living in what was once formally known as the United States of America will have to make.

Become a Neo-Roman - as roughly thirty percent of this population has already chosen to do; to become an idolater, a money worshiper, to abase yourselves before the wealthy, to violate, defile and make a mockery of your "professed" religious beliefs while avidly supporting the destruction of everything those beliefs represented, to desecrate and ignore the constitution, the bill of rights and other "quaint" documents, to desire power above all else, to countenance torture, murder and other abominations against millions who have done you no harm, to actually enjoy the degradation and humiliation of others, to spit on the good opinion of mankind, to secretly revel in what has been done in your name so you can have a more comfortable life, to pretend you didn't know what truly happened on that day called 9/11, to engage in the art of plausible deniability, to live the lie while others who naively and foolishly believe, die for ideas you publicly declare but gave up long ago.

Or remain an American – To remain true to the often stated principals of this nation, to become a stranger in a strange land, to gaze in horror upon a culture and a people where more than a third of the population and all of it's elites are no longer recognizable for having forsaken the ideas they once professed to believe, a place where these Neo-Romans no longer even attempt to live up to their sacred principals, moral obligations, covenants, bonds or the oaths they swore to uphold....a people and a country  where one third of it's former citizenry and all of it's elites have renounced their citizenship and have voluntarily endeavored to make this formally imperfect union into a sick, twisted, vicious, sadistic, perverted, blasphemous, vile, nightmarish version of the Roman Empire….into a land of the living dead

The choice is still your's, you can choose to remain true to yourself, to America's stated values and ideas - or you can choose to join the New Roman Empire and become a Neo-Roman.

It's your choice. - mpg

White Elephants
Must Read - Some quotes...."Ostensibly, the arms are needed to strengthen Saudi Arabia against the Great Satan: Iran. In Saudi eyes, this is now the great danger."  -  "Allah, in his infinite wisdom, has seen to it that almost all the huge Middle East oil reserves are located in Shiite areas: in Iran, in the South of Iraq and the Shiite areas of Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf principalities. If these reserves slip away from US control, it will cause a drastic change in the balance of power, not only in the region but in the entire world.  -  Therefore, the strengthening of Saudi Arabia—ruled by conservative Sunnis—makes a lot of sense from the American point of view....."

A Horrible Milestone  -  Group's Estimate of Iraqi Deaths to Cross One Million

Kucinich Calls Out Clinton’s Nuclear Blunder
A quote...."Once again, as with her stance on the Iraq war, Clinton’s record has been inconsistent when it comes to how, when and against whom she would take military action were she to become the U.S. commander in chief.  Perhaps she has decided, or been urged by her advisers, to strike an aggressive pose in order to compensate for being a woman in a race for the presidency, a situation that some voters might view as virtually irreconcilable.  But balancing “I’m your girl” wink-wink affability with “I can play with the big boys and their big guns” credibility is one thing, and going so far as to introduce even the dim possibility of pre-emptive use of nuclear weapons in a notoriously volatile region is entirely another."

The Existence of the PKK Terrorism in Iraq and the US
A quote...."Against Turkey’s complaints and suggestions, Americans affirm that they can not destroy these camps alone and list the reasons as; insufficient forces and also absence of legal arrangement to do it etc. The US says that the Baghdad Government is competent about this subject and they ask Turkey to negotiate the subject with the Baghdad Government, not the US. And when Turkey turns to Baghdad and warns the Baghdad Government, makes proposal to the Iraqis, yet Iraqi officials reply as they aren’t able to destroy the camps; and add that only American army, Barzani and Talabani could destroy PKK terrorism, not the Bahgdad Government forces. And the Baghdad Government affirms that Kurdish local administration of Iraq is in charge of combating terrorist camps. In response, Turkey turns to Arbil and has talks with Barzani and Talabani, offers the same options to them. The answer that Turkey gets is same as the Washington’s and Baghdad Government’s answer: Not having the authority to act to destroy the camps and insufficient forces."

Fed bails out banks
War Warning - A quote...."August 11, 2007 – Yesterday the Federal Reserve purchased $38 billion in mortgage debt from leading banks in an effort to prevent a much needed correction and crash of the artificially supported stock market.  The Federal Reserve calls it adding reserves.  In total, the Fed added a total of $87.5 billion to banks' reserves at the Fed this week – a page straight from the Plunge Protection playbook.   By saying that it added something to banks' reserves implies something of value, when actually, the Fed simply added $87.5 billion of high-risk debt to its cooked books."

The Grim Reaper pays a visit to Wall Street
War Warning - A quote...."There is a substantial risk that the mortgage market will devolve into a self-reinforcing negative cycle. Mounting credit problems could beget more restrictive underwriting standards, which would weigh heavily on the fragile housing market as potential borrowers become unable to obtain credit, and existing borrowers facing large payment resets are unable to refinance. Foreclosures would mount, leading to weaker house prices, falling homeowners' equity and even more substantial credit problems. The cycle repeats with more intensity and the mortgage market corrections unravel into a crash."

Given the five articles shown above, it's become obvious that the DemoRepubs have joined with the Bush regime in the Bushist's efforts to double down in the Middle East.

The passage of  Liberman's amendment threatening to go to war against Iran by a vote of 97 to 0, the passage of the FISA bill allowing Bush to eavesdrop on anyone who places a call overseas, the fact that the DemoRepubs have taken absolutely NO ACTION to rollback the last seven years of Bush's power grab by enacting JUST ONE of the Thirty Five Acts to Restore Americans' Rights and finally their approval of Bush's surge plan are all indicative of their support for the PNAC master plan.

With the Plunge Protection Team working overtime to support an increasingly fragile market while allowing the "big boys" to sell their over leveraged positions, all the while trying to paint the market with this glaringly obvious facade of a stability, all the elites would need is just one more "fortuitous" event and the DemoRepubs and those who sponsor them could shift the entire blame for the economic carnage caused by their mismanagement and greed over the last decade from their own shoulders to that of the "terrorists".  They will do this while simultaneously launching a war against Iran ensuring another decade of gloriously profitable conflict, while also using the pretext of their "fortuitous" event to establish a permanent military/police state.

It is inevitable – mpg

Soon after would come the cackle of self-righteous pride: "we Europeans are different," "we want our foreign policy based on a concept of morality," "we attempt to promote justice in the world and fix up the mess left behind by the Americans." I would then usually be told something about all the aid that Europeans give to Palestinians as proof of the decency of Europeans as opposed to the rabidly Zionist Americans who give billions to fund Israel's murderous army.  --  Would that this were true."

Germany, the Re-Engineered Ally - Part 3: Hail to the chief, or else
Must Read - A quote...."Dealing with the reflexive pacifism and the politically correct humanitarianism of the majority of Germans is still a much harder nut to crack. The print media, in particular the weekly Die Zeit, the flagship of German neoconservatives, and Der Spiegel, the middlebrow infotainment weekly, made their dissatisfaction with their readers repeatedly clear. And they give a certain depth to the main subject of political talkshows: the sorry state of mind of the average German, his lack of patriotism, his addiction to peace, and his reactionary notions about the welfare state.  -  It did not help that several efforts to reeducate Germans went seriously awry when the mainstream media (public TV, the German associate networks of CNN, plus newspapers) gave visibility and legitimacy to what might be termed the "occidentalist new right". Their interventions were so well tuned to American policies and performance expectations that they confirmed involuntarily the worst expectations of what was in the offing."

From Pakistan to the Potomac: The Terror Warriors' Enduring Victory
Must Read - A quote...."We can't really put it any plainer than this: they literally do not care how many people die and suffer as a result of their policies. The only restraint -- the only one -- on their actions is the need to preserve the acquiesence of various American factions and institutions to their own illegitimate, authoritarian rule. They have continuously, relentlessly pushed the boundaries to see how far they can go and still retain this acquiesence -- and at every step, no matter how outrageous, they have found that it still holds. And so they keep pushing one step further. (We can see a perfect example of this in the FISA farce: Bush demands draconian powers of unfettered mass surveillance; the Democrats give them to him; then he demands even more.) There seems to be no limit to the docility of Americans in the face of this authoritarian onslaught -- clearly, the nation as a whole has lost the independent spirit of its founders -- but still, a tyrant must always tread carefully, testing the waters for what the populace will swallow. Killing a million innocent Iraqis is obviously OK -- but would two million, or six million, cause an uproar? Dropping bombs in residential areas is fine with the folks -- but would carpet bombing Sadr City be a bit too much? But these restraints, such as they are, are merely political; moral, legal, and ethical concerns play no part in the Bushists' calculations. - bold/italics by website author

Dow Sinks 387 on Renewed Credit Concerns
War Warning - A quote...."NEW YORK — Wall Street's deepening fears about a spreading credit crunch sent stocks plunging again Thursday, with the Dow Jones industrials extending their series of triple-digit swings and falling more than 380 points. The catalyst for the market's latest skid: a French bank's announcement that it was freezing three funds that invested in U.S. subprime mortgages.  -  The announcement by BNP Paribas raised the specter of a widening impact of U.S. credit market problems. The idea that anyone _ institutions, investors, companies, individuals _ can't get money when they need it unnerved a stock market that has suffered through weeks of volatility triggered by concerns about tight credit and bad subprime mortgages.

Editors note:  Most probablyTuesday's 07-24-07 market action is part of a correction down to the 200 day moving average on all indices with a rebound thereafter, IF however it is not, and this activity really is the start of a premature and early end to the ten year "credit/contraction" cycle  (this editor thought it would end in 2008) you can expect a major "fortuitous" attack on the US within the next 30 to 90 days given the current up-tempo in War Warnings and War Alerts during the last three weeks..

Therefore if Tuesday's 07-24-07 activity is any indication that this current "ten year cycle" is coming to an end, it should be considered a Red War Warning - mpg  - posted 07-24-07

Germany, the Re-Engineered Ally - Part 2: Everything is broken
Must Read - A quote...."Broken machinery  --  The American political class seems to have drawn all the wrong conclusions from the end of the Cold War and the breakup of the Soviet Union. Its leisurely stroll towards permanent global hegemony just did not happen. Thus, frustration and the craving for revenge have become main drivers of US policies. The events of September 11 focused their common dysfunctionality, but they are not its root cause.  -  It is from this vantage point that arises the resigned and poignant expectation that the US will permit neither a stable Russia nor a non-cataclysmic accommodation of China's rise. American politics now have just enough flexibility to negotiate the short-term priorities of whom to put under the pressure of regime-changing demands; but the system is rigged not to reward persuasion or accommodation but toward increasing confrontation, deadline diplomacy, and grandstanding on principles that carry the load of broken credibility."

The United States and “Regime Change” in Iran
A quote...."Though the Bush administration has repeatedly emphasized its desire for democratization and regime change in Iran, there are serious questions regarding how it might try to bring this about. There is, however, little question about the goal of toppling the Islamist government, with the Bush administration threatening war, arming ethnic minorities, and funding opposition groups.  -  These efforts come in spite of the 1981 Algiers Accords, which led to the release of American hostages seized from the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, in which the United States pledged to never again attempt to overthrow the Iranian government. The failure of the United States to honor this signed bilateral agreement has contributed to the Iranians’ lack of trust in the U.S. government and overall anti-American sentiment in that country."

Lying Again, This Time About Iran's Nuclear Program

Now he is lying about Iran. Who is going to hold him accountable?"  -  "During his January 28, 2003, State of the Union address, Bush defrauded Americans at least three times. He presented a less than candid assessment of the intelligence linking Saddam Hussein to al Qaeda. He also presented a less than candid assessment of the intelligence concerning weapons of mass destruction. As former federal prosecutor, Elizabeth de la Vega, demonstrated in her book, U.S. v. Bush, according to Title 18, United States Code, Section 371"It is still the law of the United States that once politicians become Executive Branch officials, they are legally required to be honest and forthright about public matters." How RCTV President’s CIA Connection Links Venezuela and Nicaragua
A quote...."The president of Venezuela's RCTV, Eladio Larez,[1] is no stranger to the CIA. In fact, Eladio's contact with the agency goes back nearly twenty years. Larez was actually so kind as to set up a fraudulent foundation in Venezuela, called the National Foundation for Democracy, as a front organization to receive money from the CIA and pass it on to fund the operations of a major opposition newspaper in Nicaragua.[2]"

Germany, the Re-Engineered Ally - PART 1: Readiness for endless war
Must Read - A quote...."Not so many years ago, many hoped Europe might step up as a counterweight to US imperial policies. Such hopes were focused in particular on Germany - not only as the leading European power, but as a known moderating, non-military force in international politics.  -  US vituperation of the reputed European preference for diplomacy and peaceful conflict resolution as well as official Britain, in the person of Richard Cooper, former prime minister Tony Blair's international-relations guru, deemed it necessary to lecture "post-industrial Europe" about the need for "double standards" and colonial ruthlessness to beat down benighted non-Westerners, seemed to give substance to these hopes."

Beyond Disaster
Must Read - Some Quotes...."Iraq no longer exists as a unified country.  The experiment that was Iraq, the cobbling together of disparate and antagonistic patches of the Ottoman Empire by the victorious powers in the wake of World War I, belongs to the history books.  It will never come back.  The Kurds have set up a de facto state in the north, the Shiites control most of the south and the center of the country is a battleground.  There are 2 million Iraqis who have fled their homes and are internally displaced. Another 2 million have left the country, most to Syria and Jordan, which now has the largest number of refugees per capita of any country on Earth."

And....The occupation of Iraq, along with the Afghanistan occupation, has only furthered the spread of failed states and increased authoritarianism, savage violence, instability and anarchy.  It has swelled the ranks of our real enemies—the Islamic terrorists—and opened up voids of lawlessness where they can operate and plot against us."

A quote...."Aoun's party emerges winner in by-elections with narrow margin of 418 votes over Gemayel’s party.  -  Lebanon's Western-backed ruling majority was dealt a blow on Monday in by-elections that deeply split the country's Christian camp and boosted the Syrian-backed opposition ahead of a presidential poll."

OH OH ! LOOK OUT !!  Remember what happened the LAST time those Lebanese didn't vote the way the "West" (i.e. America and Israel) wanted them too....sure hope those Lebanese are building some more bomb shelters, lots of them!! - mpg

Foot and mouth: second outbreak suspected
A quote...."A second outbreak of foot and mouth disease was suspected in the protection zone set up in Surrey, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) confirmed last night.  -  A new herd of cattle was identified with clinical signs of the disease by Animal Health staff as part of their surveillance activity within the zone"

Ahhhh chooo....(sniffle, sniffle) those government research (i.e. bio-warfare) centers seem to cause no end of headaches....along with various colds, flues, chills, pandemics and eventually one bright and sunny day - the death of us all. - mpg

Chavez Announces Latin American Tour to Strengthen Integration
A quote...."Caracas, August 6, 2007 (venezuelanalysis.com)— In a record breaking eight-hour session of Aló Presidente Sunday, Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, speaking from the presidential palace of Miraflores, called for a global “alliance of civilizations” to resist the attacks of US imperialism. Chavez also officially announced he will visit Uruguay, Argentina, Bolivia and Ecuador this week with the aim of strengthening Latin American integration."

Chavez seeks end to term limits
Some quotes...."Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has confirmed that he will try to change the law to allow him to remain in power indefinitely."  -  "The new constitution will be put before parliament within the next 10 days. Later this year, there will be a referendum allowing Venezuelans to decide whether to accept the changes."

If Chavez isn't real careful about this issue....some people might accuse him of going bananas.

Eavesdropping Reforms Empower Spy Chief
A quote...."For the first time in nearly four decades, a senior intelligence official — not a secretive federal court — will have a decisive voice in whether Americans' communications can be monitored when they talk to foreigners overseas."

Or other Americans....but most of the people in this country really don't seem to care.

To those uncaring people, one day when your new company is competing for a government contract against someone who's well connected, or trying to put some financial deals together which some bigwig doesn't like, or apposing a government policy that affects YOUR rights or interests, someone will come up to you on that day and say "we have this tape of you saying......"

At that point you'll care, oh you'll care deeply....and by then it will be way too late. - mpg

A list of Benedict Arnold Democrats - and the Democrats who will challenge them in '08
A quote...."As you can see from the list presented above, out of 15 turncoat Dems, only two of these turncoats have Democratic primary challengers. Clearly, our party still has a world of work to do - and not much time left to do it.  -  So, if your Congressperson is one of the individuals listed above, and there isn't anyone challenging that individual for that seat in Congress, it's a sign that you should find an honest Democrat who is willing to run against them - or possibly run against them yourself."

Is California Decision Death Knell For Voting Machines?
A quote...."Saying California's touch-screen electronic voting machines can not prevent hackers or partisans who want to alter vote counts, Secretary of State Debra Bowen announced late Friday that she will remove thousands of the machines from use in California's new early 2008 presidential primary next Feb. 5. Southern California - from San Diego to Orange County to Los Angeles - will most seriously affected."

$Trillions upon $Trillions: Has U.S. Maxed Out its Platinum Cards Yet?

A quote...."It took this nation from 1789 to FY (Fiscal Year) 1979 to accumulate the first $800 billion of debt. The second $800 billion was added by FY 1984, the third by FY 1988, the fourth by FY 1991, the fifth by FY1992, the sixth by FY 1995, the seventh by FY 1999, eighth and ninth by FY 2004, and the tenth and eleventh $800 billion bump in our outstanding debt by FY 2007. Now US Treasury Secretary Paulson is putting Congress on notice that another increase is needed by September. Is there any doubt that the fifth increase since January 2001 will be authorized? Will this bump be another $800 billion, or will this jump surpass the magical $1 TRILLION mark?"

Economy Goes From Bad to Worse
A quote...."The Commerce Department revised its growth data last month. It now shows the economy grew much slower over the last three years than we had previously thought. In particular, the new data implies productivity has been growing at just a 1.5 percent annual rate over the last three years. This is the same rate the economy experienced during the long productivity slowdown from 1973 to 1995. It is a full percentage point below the 2.5 percent growth rate from 1995 to 2004."

2Q earnings fall at Wash Post Co., miss Wall Street expectations
A quote...."Circulation continued to fall. For the first six months of the year circulation at the Post fell 3 percent, and as of July 1 it stood at 652,200 daily and 920,000 on Sunday"

So what?  The Washington Post only writes for the one, one hundredth of one percent, who really run this country anyway....so why would they even care about the rest?- mpg

Danse Macabre: An Apology to Democrats
Must Read - A quote...."I would like to apologize to the leaders of the Democratic Party for implying in my previous post that they are political cowards. I confess that I was carried away, rhetorically, in the heat of the moment, and was completely mistaken in ascribing their actions on the recent warrantless wiretapping bill to "spineless acquiescence" to the Bush Administration's authoritarian proclivities."

"As one of Empire Burlesque's readers pointed out, that phrase was inconsistent with the rest of the piece, for it implied that the Democratic elite were actually opposed to the essence of Bush's authoritarian/corporatist/militarist agenda, and were somehow acting against their will in surrendering to Bush time and again during the past six years. As the reader noted, drawing on Arthur Silber's analysis (more on this below), the Democrats "are not spineless or weak. Nobody pushes them to do what they don't want (no matter how much the Digbys would like to explain away their actions that way.). They're completely corrupt and fully, volitionally complicit." The reader also pointed me to a comment they'd left on Glenn Greenwald's takedown of the vote: "It doesn't take any courage to do what you want to do. Just the opposite. They WANT all these things, but can hardly reveal that to their often sincere but easy-to-dupe followers, so they hide behind the 'we were threatened, Bush made us do it, we're spineless, and we don't want to look weak,' meme. They cop a plea to the lesser charge but the truth is, tragically,  far more dark."
