Venezuela: Not What You Think
A quote...." 12/01/07 "MRZine" - -- -In the case of Hugo Chavez and the Venezuelan Bolivarian Revolution, the mainstream media and politicians in the United States have elevated their game of demonizing all who oppose US foreign policy and business interests to a higher level of absurdity than usual. According to the mainstream media, the only newsworthy stories in Venezuela are one sided diatribes lifted from the discredited, opposition-owned media in Venezuela. For example, we read about Chavez shutting down opposition TV stations. We hear that Chavez is rewriting the Venezuelan Constitution so he can be President for life. Chavez is a dictator, QED."

Coup D’Etat Rumblings in Venezuela
A quote...."The Bush administration tried and failed three prior times to oust Hugo Chavez since its first aborted two-day coup attempt in April, 2002. Through FOIA requests, lawyer, activist and author Eva Golinger uncovered top secret CIA documents of US involvement that included an intricate financing scheme involving the quasi-governmental agency, National Endowment of Democracy (NED), and US Agency for International Development (USAID). The documents also showed the White House, State Department and National Security Agency had full knowledge of the scheme, had to have approved it, and there’s little doubt of CIA involvement as it’s always part of this kind of dirty business. What’s worrying now is what went on then may be happening again in what looks like a prelude to a fourth made-in-Washington attempt to oust the Venezuelan leader that must be monitored closely as events develop."

Pro-Constitutional Reform Closes Campaign with Massive Rally in Venezuela
A quote...."Caracas, December 1, 2007 (venezuelanalysis.com) - In a hard-hitting speech Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez told over 500,000 supporters at the final campaign rally in favor of the proposed constitutional reform on Friday, "If the ‘yes' vote wins on Sunday and the Venezuelan oligarchy, playing the [U.S.] empire's game, comes with their little stories of fraud," he will suspend all oil shipments to the U.S immediately. "The U.S. will not receive one drop of oil," he declared. Chavez also warned private media against promoting violence and destabilization after the referendum."

Venezuelan Government Uncovers Video of Opposition Destabilization Plan
A quote...."Caracas, November 30, 2007 (venezuelanalysis.com)- Venezuelan Telecommunications Minister Jesse Chacon presented a video revealing the opposition strategy of destabilization for Sunday's referendum at a press conference on Thursday. In the video, opposition leaders call on their supporters to reject the results of the referendum and to take part in nation-wide protests to overturn the constitutional reform. Two opposition leaders are being investigated for inciting violence and calling on supporters to break the law."

Editor’s note:  Understand this editor is highly suspicious of any leader who attempts to gather more power unto himself.  On the other hand the ceaseless attempts to undermine Venezuela's sovereignty by the United States government makes Chavez's desires completely understandable.

Hopefully Chavez will be able to tell the difference between legitimate opposition and disagreements by others with his party's policies, while keeping political mechanisms in place to allow these views to be expressed, versus the foreign inspired quislings and traitors attempting to destroy the country of Venezuela from within and change it from the free nation it has now become into a satrapy of the US power elites.

This is a very serious issue, for those who casually think it isn't, or who are against Chavez for ideological reasons (this editor has a few problems with the ideology); just remember the price to be paid by any country which chooses to deal with the US elites can be horrific.  As a direct result of deliberate US policies hundreds of thousands of people died in Guatemala and Honduras, tens of thousands in Nicaragua and Chile and of course over a million (so far) in Iraq.

And most people in the US don’t care.  They simply….don’t…..care.

This is what happens when any people or any nation is foolish enough to allow US elites into their country, in the end, after many thousands have died and the countries so infected have been utterly devastated, sometimes for decades, the US will simply leave and move on to another victim while the only thing the people in the affected countries will have left to themselves is tombstones, tears, bitter rage, tragic and horrifying memories….and lost opportunities for their children.

This is what the US power elites do to weaker countries.  They have a stellar sixty year record of doing so.  They've done it every single time without fail….and Chavez knows this. - mpg

The Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act: A Tutorial in Orwellian Newspeak
A quote...."Political language has to consist largely of euphemisms . . . and sheer cloudy vagueness.”

- George Orwell -

H.R 1955: the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007 recently passed by the House-a companion bill is in the Senate-is barely one sentence old before its Orwellian moment : --  It begins, “AN ACT - To prevent homegrown terrorism, and for other purposes.”  --  Those whose pulse did not quicken at “other purposes” have probably not read George Orwell’s essay, “Politics and the English Language,” or they voted for the other George both times.

Emergency Responders Face Deep Aid Cuts
A quote...."WASHINGTON (AP) - The Bush administration intends to slash counterterrorism funding for police, firefighters and rescue departments across the country by more than half next year, according to budget documents obtained by The Associated Press.  - bold/italics by website author

To the twenty to thirty percent of Neo-Romans who make up this nation’s population and who still support the so-called "War On Terror"....you haven't been lying to the rest of us have you?  After all we're supposed to be spending this money to "protect" us from the "evil terrorists" aren't we? You haven't been "pretending" all this time....have you?

This wasn't all just a pretext to go murder over a million Iraqis, make over five million of them into refugees, while ruining this nation’s reputation, destroying this nation’s constitution and emptying this nation’s treasury all in an effort to steal the Iraqis’ oil and occupy their country....was it?

One would hope not, because that would make you just as evil as all those "Americans" who "somehow" “fortuitously” dropped the ball on 9/11 allowing these very same people in charge of our security to make hundreds of billions of dollars in profits from the ensuing world wide chaos, death and destruction.

Naomi Klein outlines 'The Shock Doctrine' with MSNBC's Olbermann
A quote....""There is a word for what happens when you invade a country, especially on a false pretense, and then you grab its assets," says Klein. "It's called looting, right? And it's illegal. And Iraqis responded as if their country was being looted. Not as if it was being restructured, or developed, or reconstructed, or any of the cleansed words that were used to describe it."

US says it has right to kidnap British citizens

This is EXACTLY what happens when you go down that long slippery slope of tyranny.  What are the British going to say now...."we didn't know it could happen to us", "see here old chap, that sort of thing just isn't done to English gentleman".

A quote...."The principal victims of British policies are Unpeople - those whose lives are deemed worthless, expendable in the pursuit of power and commercial gain. They are the modern equivalent of the 'savages' of colonial days, who could be mown down by the British guns in virtual secrecy, or else in circumstances where the perpetrators were hailed as the upholders of civilization."

Iraqi prisoners’ file a bargain chip in U.S. hands
A quote...."Politicians call for the release of Iraqi prisoners languishing in U.S. and government jails. Mosque preachers demand the same in their Friday sermons. Even government officials make similar requests, though in a different language, when the case of Iraqis crammed in U.S. and government prisons is brought to attention. - Nonetheless, years pass and nothing happens. There are prisoners who have no idea about why they are incarcerated. The lucky ones are those who were covered by a pardon and freed after at least two years in prison without trial.

Shifting Policy or a Face-saving Gimmick, Somalia Cannot be Ignored
A quote...."November 29, 2007 -- By all standards, the situation unfolding in Somalia is horrifically grim, and according to the UN, it is the worst crisis in Africa; worse than the crisis in Darfur that outraged the world’s conscience in an unprecedented way. - However, unlike Darfur, Washington has a role in the creation of this massive humanitarian crisis and therefore must have a role in rectifying it."

Old Friends Of Tehran
A quote...."President George W. Bush's charm offensive is paying off. After a slew of cozy visits in recent weeks with European leaders about the latest round of U.S. economic sanctions against Iran, European governments are taking a harder line in the hopes of quelling the threat of invasion. Already, Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, Siemens, Dresdner and HSBC have backed out of Iran.  --  So much the better for their emerging market rivals. Hundreds of Chinese and Russian companies are working in Iran; few are expected to leave soon. In fact, the latest round of U.S. sanctions may have the opposite of their intended effect, driving Iranian business further into the hands of aggressively mercantilist Chinese and Russian firms in search of lucrative contracts once dominated by the West. In sectors like oil production, telecommunications, aerospace and automotives, the absence of Western mainstays is creating new opportunities for these emerging powers in one of the world's fastest-growing (half of Iran's population is under the age of 20) and most strategic markets."

Evo Morales versus the Oligarchy - The Battle in Bolivia

Evo Morales, the first Indian president of the country, is forcing a showdown with the oligarchy and the right wing political parties that have stymied efforts to draft a new constitution to transform the nation. It's beginning to look like Japan.  The banks will carry these "non-performing" loans on their books for years.  They should be considered non-performing because with the large increases in inflation expected to hit this economy soon, even if the loans are paid back (a big if since this economy is expected to go into it's normal once a decade business cycle induced recession), they'll still lose money because the lower rates will not make up the difference caused by the Fed's deliberately engineered bout of inflation (remember the wealthy elites like inflation....they positively despise deflation). – mpg

Iran: Why does Bush invoke the threat of World War III?
Part 1: Iran’s strategic position
Part 2: Eurasian geopolitics and US threats against Iran
A quote from Part 1:...."On October 17, George Bush made a remarkable statement concerning the mounting tensions between the US and Iran: “If you’re interested in avoiding World War III, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing [Iran] from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon.” Bush has since repeated and defended this comment. It testifies to the superficiality of media commentary that this declaration has not been subjected to critical analysis."

A quote from Part 2:...."US strategists have warned that they would do all in their power to prevent the emergence of a strategic competitor on the Eurasian landmass. In his 1998 book The Grand Chessboard, former Carter administration National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski warned: “It is imperative that no Eurasian challenger emerges, capable of dominating Eurasia and thus of also challenging America.”

A Change Ain't Gonna Come: Democrats Openly Embrace Aggression and Torture
A quote...."It was a remarkable display even by the hideous standards that the Democrats have already set for themselves. Over the past week, the party's leaders have put forward not one but two architects of Bush Regime war crimes as standard-bearers for Democratic policies and principles. In so doing, they have aligned themselves as completely and publicly as possible with the Hitlerian war crime of military aggression in Iraq and the Stalinist filth of deliberate, calculated and brutal torture, as exemplified by (but in no way limited to) the sickening atrocities at Abu Ghraib."

"First, the party leadership picked retired General Ricardo Sanchez to give the Democratic response to the president's weekly radio address last Saturday. Terror is a tactic
Must Read - A quote....Interview with Nir Rosen - 11/30/07 "ICH" -- - Question: Is the "surge" working as Bush claims or is the sudden lull in the violence due to other factors like demographic changes in Baghdad?

Nir Rosen: I think that even calling it a surge is misleading. A surge is fast; this took months. It was more like an ooze. The US barely increased the troop numbers. It mostly just forced beleaguered American soldiers to stay longer. At the same time, the US doubled their enemies because, now, they're not just fighting the Sunni militias but the Shiite Mahdi army also.

McCain's Mangled Metaphor - Has the Third Reich reappeared in the Middle East?
A quote...."If you oppose the war, says McCain, you're – pro-Hitler. It was inevitable – the return of Hitler, that is. The third-rate painter and homicidal maniac always turns up when the War Party gets desperate. After five years of war, and nothing but a reinvigorated al Qaeda and thousands of dead and grievously wounded to show for it, there's just one way to stanch the loss of support for our Iraqi adventure, and that is the return of Hitler to the international scene. In John McCain's world, it doesn't matter that we were lied into war: it doesn't matter that there were no Iraqi links to al Qaeda; we only have to know that Saddam was a Middle Eastern Hitler, who has now been replaced by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and everything falls neatly into place."

China wants more Iran oil
A quote...."Chinese oil firms will again buy crude oil from Iran and are seeking to increase their imports from the country. - A senior Iranian official has confirmed that Chinese state firms are carrying on business with the world's fourth-largest oil producer, despite U.S calls for international businesses to reduce business ties with Iran."

One of the comments left on the site was as follows....

"Good for China. She, (and India,as well), would be foolish not to use this opportunity to guarantee for their people a steady supply of oil from a neighbor with huge reserves. While Americans and Israelis play at being Ubermensch, (the Germans did it with more panache), there is no reason that the rest of the world needs bide its time waiting for maturity to strike these would-be movers and shakers. The opportunities open to China and even more so, to Russia are mind-boggling. India’s route will be a little harder, but she, too, is destined to make her mark this century. The EU? It is tied to the latest re-incarnation of its Imperialist past, and failing to focus on what could be its truly glorious future. The US will bankrupt itself, then, if global war can be avoided, the Americans will take a deep breath and start over, on what hopefully will be a wiser path, but not as long as they can exploit Africa and South America, which, in the latter’s case, will not be too long. What a fascinating time to be alive! Keep up the good reporting!"  --  By Heraclitus, -- 11-29-07, 06:43 AM  --

Impeachment Must Happen
Must Read - A quote...." 11/29/07 "ICH" -- -- Clearly the nation has turned against Vice President Cheney and President George W. Bush. Their approval ratings are the lowest of any elected leaders in American history. We are weary of war and bled white from profligate spending and larceny. Our civil rights have been severely restricted and crimes have been committed. A once peaceful world stands on the brink of turmoil."

Resurrecting the Star Chamber
A quote...."When the Founding Fathers looked for a model that reflected the abuses they objected to—in short what they intended to forbid by their new Constitution and Bill of Rights—they turned to an English institution, the Court of Star Chamber. It was a state security court with ancient roots which flourished under the Tudor and Stuart monarchs. The Star Chamber court operated in secrecy, was not bothered by the picky evidentiary rules that emerged in other courts, and did not believe that those appearing before it on state security charges had many rights—certainly not the right to counsel, nor even the right to conduct a defense. It relied very heavily on torture to extract the evidence it sought to convict, usually a confession—though rarely, of course, a confession with any validity, since the application of the rack would quickly get the subject to say whatever was desired, truthful or not."

“Thousands” Illegally Rendered By Bush Administration for Interrogation, Torture
A quote...."In violation of international and U.S. law, “thousands” of alleged terrorists have been victims of “extraordinary rendition” by the Bush Administration since 9/11, two legal scholars say. “Instead of working to bring those committing crimes against the United States to justice in U.S. courts, the Bush Administration seems intent on doing exactly the opposite---keeping such individuals away from U.S. courts, hidden in a web of secret prisons, underground interrogation cells, and in the hands of cooperative governments,” write Margaret Satterthwaite and Angela Fisher."

Karl Rove's Shameless, Remorseless, Soulless Attempt to Rewrite History
A quote...."I went on Countdown last night to talk about what Keith Olbermann called Karl Rove's "attack on history. During an interview with Charlie Rose, the erstwhile Boy Genius pulled out his bucket of whitewash and audaciously claimed that "one of the untold stories" about the war in Iraq is that the Bush administration had been "opposed' to Congress holding the vote authorizing the president to use military force in Iraq just a few weeks prior to the 2002 elections because "we thought it made it too political."

Naomi Wolf: America's Fascist Coup Owes Legacy To Bush's Nazi Grandfather

Russia’s Election Is for Parliament, but the Real Vote Is on Putin
A quote...."MOSCOW, Nov. 28 — His valor is extolled on billboards across the nation, and his daily feats dominate the television news. At a keynote election speech last week, his handlers even showcased a shimmying girl band singing an ode to that heartthrob in the Kremlin: “I want a man like Putin, full of strength!”

Putin should be careful, he wouldn't want to set-up a "cult of personality" even if it's a Russian tradition.  No doubt the actual elections and vote count will be fare.  But he and his party are starting to head down that slippery slope where they'll soon be denying voters access to voting booths, removing them from the voting rolls, or actually rigging the vote count by (God forbid) employing firms like Diebold, Sequoia Systems or ESS to manufactor or delete the votes as we've done here in the US.  No one wants to be that discredited (except for Bush and the Neocons of course) - mpg

A Diary Of The Onset Of The Greater Depression
A quote...."11/29/07 "ICH" -- -- For more years than I can count I've heard Danny Schechter's name bandied about in progressive circles, but for all his tireless activism, he did not fully capture my attention until I saw his stunning documentary "In Debt We Trust." By that time I had forsaken my myopic focus on imperialism, the Iraq War, the Democratic Party, and of course, Bush-bashing. It was becoming painfully and increasingly clear to me that history was repeating itself, and being an historian, I was well aware that it never does so in exactly the same manner but often with enough mirroring of earlier eras that it behooves human beings to sit up and pay attention."

Have They No Shame?
Must Read - A quote...."Every Saturday, the president of the United States gives a radio address to the nation. It is followed by the Democratic response, usually given by a senator or representative. This past Saturday the Democrats chose retired Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez to give their response, the same general accused in at least three lawsuits in the U.S. and Europe of authorizing torture and cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment of prisoners in Iraq. This, combined with the Democrats’ endorsement of Attorney General Michael Mukasey despite his unwillingness to label waterboarding as torture, indicates that the Democrats are increasingly aligned with President Bush’s torture policies."

"In 1967, it took six days for the Israeli army to smash Egypt, Jordan, and Syria and seize the West Bank, the Golan Heights, and the Sinai Peninsula. In 2006, a Shiite militia fought the mightiest army in the Middle East to a bloody standstill in Lebanon."

"In 1991, it took four days of ground combat for the United States to crush Saddam Hussein’s army in the Gulf War. U.S. losses were 148 dead and 647 wounded. After more than five years of war in Iraq, U.S. losses are approaching 4,000, with over 50,000 wounded; 2007 is already the deadliest year of the war for the United States."

Quiet Before a New Iraq Storm? - In the Fox's Lair
A quote...."One reason parts of Iraq have quieted down, at least for a while, has received widespread attention: the Sunni split from al-Qaeda. AI-Qaeda's own tactics alienated its base, which is usually a fatal political mistake, and for once we were wise enough not to get in the way of an enemy who was making a blunder. - But there has been little comment on an equally important reason for improved stability in Iraq, Muqtada al-Sadr's stand-down order to his Mahdi Army militia. Just as it seemed we were headed straight for a war with the Shiites, they sheered away. We now appear to be doing the same; at least the papers here no longer report daily raids and air strikes on Shiite areas. That too suggests we may have learned something."

He said Abbas offers Palestinians “a vision of peace, a homeland of their own, and a better life.” But he warned: “If responsible Palestinian cannot deliver on this hopeful vision, then the forces of extremism and terror will be strengthened, a generation of Palestinians could be lost to the extremists, and the Middle East will grow in despair.”  --  And it will all be their fault, Bush implied.  --  By contrast, Bush went easy on Israel."

Annapolis: US prepares Palestinian civil war and rallies Arab support against Iran

Also newsworthy is that the mainstream media this time around, at least currently, is mostly treating all this as a non-story, with barely a follow-up mention of McClellan's bombshell and its implications. A Nation on the Edge of the Final Descent

Editor's note: Parts (I), (II) & (III) were posted 11-25-07
A quote...."....neither Kerry nor any other leading politician will ever provide an honest answer. If Kerry were to be honest, he might say something like this: "Certainly I wanted to be president. But if I called into question the election results in any fundamental way, it would raise still more questions. It might make people wonder about the integrity of elections altogether. It make cause people to question the legitimacy of our system of government itself. We can't have that. Sure, Democrats and Republicans disagree about some issues of policy, and sometimes those are important. But we agree on the basics: a corporatist, authoritarian government at home, and American world hegemony abroad. That system has worked just fine for me, and for all my friends. Hell, I'm incredibly wealthy and powerful. So I don't get to be president. But I still have a life that 99.9% of you can only dream about, and I like that just fine. The bewildering and terrifying fact of the matter is Worst has been fully and completely trumped by the times, relegated to silver-medal status and the lower podium. The grim reality of this brave new deranged world is that the nation is now swarming with so many new and different horrors, which were upon us in one brief and ravaging eyeblink of time. It went beyond Worst just that fast. - As such, the new category is titled Beyond."

"This is, in theory, still a free country, but our politically correct, censorious times are such that many of us tremble to give vent to perfectly acceptable views for fear of condemnation. Freedom of speech is thereby imperiled, big questions go undebated, and great lies become accepted, unequivocally as great truths."

In the Realm of the Dying Dollar
PG's post - A quote...."Great powers die slowly. It took years before the world realized that Great Britain was an imperial corpse, sapped of its strength by two world wars. The funeral finally occurred on Feb. 21, 1947, a freezing winter day in bomb-torn, bedraggled London, when the British wrote their own epitaph. That was the day that London cabled Washington: "His Majesty's Government, in view of their own situation, find it impossible to grant further financial assistance to Greece," amounting to a half billion dollars a year and a garrison of 40,000 troops. The British also announced the same day that they were withdrawing from Turkey. "The British are finished," remarked a stunned Dean Acheson, who was soon to be Harry Truman's secretary of State."

Time magazine lavishly rewards journalistic malpractice
A quote...."I titled yesterday's post -- regarding the multiple false claims in Joe Klein's latest column -- "Time Magazine's FISA fiasco," because episodes of severe journalistic malfeasance are rarely about one reporter. They typically reflect on the media institution as a whole, and that is absolutely the case for Time Magazine and Klein's latest in a series of abject inaccuracies."

Why do ‘Liberal Media’ Go So Easy on Bush?

UPDATE 3-Venezuela wants move away from dollar oil prices
A quote...."CARACAS, Nov 27 (Reuters) - Venezuela on Tuesday called for oil to be priced and billed in currencies other than the weak U.S. dollar, which has eroded producer nations' purchasing power. - Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez also blamed the United States for record high oil prices, saying its political pressure on some oil-producing countries had helped push crude toward $100 a barrel."

America; Decending to 3rd World Status?

U.S. Falls to No. 15 in Average Worker Income
PG's post - A quote....""Comparisons are odious," that is, hateful, according to a popular phrase about seven centuries old. Comparison, however, is one of the tasks assigned to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris, an international body of 30 of the richest countries. It tries to compare its members' economic and social data, a difficult, perhaps even odious, job. - Sometime back it broadened statistically (for comparison purposes) the definition of the average workers in its member nations while trying to examine relative tax burdens. The result was "monumental," reckons Jacob Kirkegaard, an economist at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. The OECD ranked the after-tax income of the average worker in the United States as 15th among its member nations. The richest middle class, if measured in terms of the purchasing power of their income, was Britain."

'No regrets'
A quote...."Whether he will admit it or not, mortgage credit inflation was central to the Federal Reserve's post-tech bubble reflationary strategy. It really was a "Great Experiment" in inflationist monetary policy and, predictably, it failed miserably. The Fed and some notable Wall Street "strategists" feigned a system-wide "price level" that the Fed was obligated to adeptly manipulate to ensure that that evil "deflation" was not allowed to take root. What a crock. The risk was, then as it is now, US credit collapse - and certainly not a somewhat deflating price level. Accommodating history's most reckless credit expansion over the past six years then ensured that the risk of collapse grew significantly greater while countermeasures turned increasingly unavailing. Home prices falling everywhere: S&P - Down 4.5% nationally over past year, Case-Shiller says
A quote...."WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. home prices were falling in every region of the country in September, according to a closely watched index of home prices released Tuesday. Home prices fell in September in all 20 major cities covered by the Case-Shiller price index, even in cities that had been holding up before the August freeze in mortgage markets, Standard & Poor's reported."

Editor's note: The above may be why the Dow went up 215 points on Tuesday.  The market makers think this sort of bad news assures another Fed rate cut.  They might be right, but there have been a few articles published that state Bernanke might be thinking of taking away the party's punch bowl. And on the day THAT happens, assuming it happens in the next year, it won't matter what the technical, fundamental or contrarian indicators point too...it will most assuredly be a really bad day for the market. - mpg

Signs Are Pointing South on Wall St.
A quote...."Wall Street is betting on a recession. - Investors in stocks and bonds are paying prices that indicate they believe a snowballing housing crisis and worsening credit crunch will soon tip the U.S. economy into a recession, analysts said. Many economists, including leaders of the Federal Reserve, don't think things will get that bad, but some say the risk of a serious downturn has risen in recent weeks. - Investors were so eager to buy ultra-safe government bonds yesterday that they were willing to accept sharply lower interest rates. The rate on the 10-year Treasury bond fell to 3.84 percent from 4 percent Friday. The low rates indicate investors expect the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates aggressively in the coming year to ease the pain of recession." - italics by websit author

America's Days of Reckoning - Good-Bye to All That

Moreover, Naomi Wolf agrees with him. These two writers of different political persuasions arrive at America's demise from different directions."

Stunned by Lack of Outrage, Not Outrageous Acts
A quote...."I continue to be stunned. - Not by Bush any longer. There was a time when I was stunned by nearly everything he did. Or said. Who wouldn’t be stunned by a president who could say, “They misunderestimated me,â€ and sincerely believe he’s on top of things?  --  Nor by Cheney. His pure evil no longer surprises me, although there was a time when he routinely stunned me. Torture? Torture??  --  Not by Congress, either. There was a time when I was stunned by that crowd’s sheeplike mentality. I’d hear them decry the war, decry torture, decry Bush’s growing deficit, then I’d drop my jaw as they voted time and again to give the president carte blanche."

America in the Time of Empire

By the time they hobble off the world stage, overrun by the hordes at the gates or vanishing quietly into the pages of history books, what made them successful and powerful no longer has relevance. This rot takes place over decades, as with the Soviet Union, or, even longer, as with the Roman, Ottoman or Austro-Hungarian empires. It is often imperceptible."

Right now, “27% of Americans rate current economic conditions as either ‘excellent’ or ‘good,’ while 44% say they are ‘only fair’ and 28% say they are poor. Moreover, “an extraordinary 78% of Americans now say the economy is getting worse, while a scant 13% say it is getting better.

Iraq Has Only Militants, No Civilians
Must Read - A quote...."Name them. Maim them. Kill them. - From the beginning of the American occupation in Iraq, air strikes and attacks by the U.S. military have only killed "militants," "criminals," "suspected insurgents," "IED [Improvised Explosive Device] emplacers," "anti-American fighters," "terrorists," "military age males," "armed men," "extremists," or "al-Qaeda." - The pattern for reporting on such attacks has remained the same from the early years of the occupation to today. Take a helicopter attack on October 23rd of this year near the village of Djila, north of Samarra. The U.S. military claimed it had killed 11 among "a group of men planting a roadside bomb." Only later did a military spokesperson acknowledge that at least six of the dead were civilians. Local residents claimed that those killed were farmers, that there were children among them, and that the number of dead was greater than 11."

White House Releases "Principles" for Permanent Iraqi Presence
A quote...."So it begins. After years of obfuscation and denial on the length of the U.S.'s stay in Iraq, the White House and the Maliki government have released a joint declaration of "principles" for "friendship and cooperation." Apparently President Bush and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki signed the declaration during a morning teleconference. - Naturally, the declaration is euphemistic, and doesn't refer explicitly to any U.S. military presence."

This looks like Gate's handiwork.  It appears the administration has successfully played off the Sunni insurgency by letting them believe the administration would try to oust Maliki in preparation for their attack against Iran, thereby getting them to agree to a halt in the violence, while getting Maliki so scared of the impending coup that he agreed to a permanent US presence.

See article shown below.

Even more good news for Maliki
A quote...."Shortly before the heated parliamentary debate, Maliki's security forces refrained from arresting any members of Muqtada's Mahdi Army in Sadr City in Baghdad. Muqtada received the message and reciprocated from within the chamber. Both he and the prime minister are terrified by the American project of financing and arming Sunni tribes to fight al-Qaeda in Iraq. The minute that is over, Muqtada and Maliki believe, the Sunnis will use these arms against the Shi'ites. That explains why last week it was declared that Maliki was bringing 18,000 militiamen (almost completely Shi'ite) into the armed forces. He was doing this regardless of their criminal records or military background or lack thereof. Many of them were members of the Mahdi Army. The argument went: "If the Sunnis are legitimizing their arms, then so will we."

So now we have it, in exchange for an agreed permanent US presence, the Sunnis will be shut out of any meaningful power in the current Iraqi government.  For this tacit agreement to hold the US would probably have to reconsider its intentions to attack Iran.  Something that's highly unlikely.

This is of course just a snapshot of the situation, politics, promises and alliances in the Middle East under the barrel of a gun are, to put it mildly, very fluid. – mpg

The government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is negotiating a formal bilateral treaty with the United States. The question is whether the agreement will be submitted to parliament for ratification, and whether al-Maliki will be able to get a majority of parliamentarians to vote for it if so. Much of the work of the Iraqi government is never put through parliament and is just implemented by fiat by the executive. -- Juan Cole --

Israeli-Palestinian Middle East "Peace Process": Tragedy and Travesty at Annapolis
A quote...."November 27 at Annapolis kicks off the latest Israeli-Palestinian Middle East peace process round that may be an historic first. It's the first time in memory the legitimate government of one side is excluded, and that alone dooms it. Like previous rounds, it's more pretense than peace, and as Jonathan Steele puts it in his November 16 Guardian column: "The Palestinian path to peace does not go via Annapolis....so what do....Palestinians do next....In their decades-long bid for justice, they have tried everything:" armed struggle to compromise, but nothing works and the reason is simple. Their sincerity isn't matched by Israel, the West, other Arab states and the US most of all with all the muscle in its hands to push or constrain Israelis to be serious and fair."

Iran: The uninvited guest a[t] peace summit
Related article - A quote...."Tuesday's Arab-Israeli peace summit in Annapolis, Maryland, is supposed to be about resolving long-standing Palestinian issues, the Golan Heights, and other contentious matters. But, increasingly, it is framed in the United States and Israeli media as a dual-purpose conference, the other being the containment of Iran."

So Bush and the PNAC'ing Neocons have already perverted and twisted the Annapolis conference from a forum for resolving the Palestinian Diaspora and thereby removing one of the major impediments for peace in the Middle East - to a vehicle to create constructive instability, strife and conflict throughout that resource rich area of the world to enable them to carry out their thirty year PNAC plan.

It is so typical of the Bushists to turn what might have been a chance for peace and reconciliation into it's exact opposite.  This is what they do to all that they are involved with or those they have converse with, this is what they have done throughout their entire lives....they are truly, unmitigated, unrepentant, malignant, evil. – mpg
