"Tonight's story on The Twilight Zone is
somewhat unique and calls for a different kind of
introduction.
This, as you may recognize, is a map of the World, and
there's a country there once called the United States. On
a given morning not too long ago, the rest of the world
disappeared and the United States was left all alone. Its
inhabitants were never sure whether the world was
destroyed and only the United States left untouched, or
whether the country had somehow been taken away somewhere
else.
They were, on the other hand, sure of one thing: the
cause. Monsters had arrived in the United States . Just by
using their minds, these monsters took away the citizens'
government, their media, their currency, their judiciary,
their Christianity, their family values, their sacrament
of marriage, the right to raise and teach their children,
their knowledge of right and wrong, the difference between
truth and a lie, the difference between a man and a woman,
their freedom of speech, and their freedom of
thought—because they displeased the monsters, they weren't
like the monsters—and the monsters moved this entire
nation back into the dark ages—just by using their minds.
Now I'd like to introduce you to some of the people in the
United States. This is Mr. Fremont. It's in his farmhouse
that the monsters reside. This is Mrs. Fremont. And this
is Aunt Amy, who probably had more control over these
monsters in the beginning than almost anyone. But one day
she forgot. She began to sing aloud. Now, the monsters
don't like singing, so their minds snapped at her, turned
her into the smiling, vacant thing you're looking at now.
She sings no more. And you'll note that the people in the
United States, have to smile....always....
They have to think happy thoughts and say happy things
because once displeased, the monsters can wish them into a
cornfield, change them into a grotesque, walking horror,
or make them into an un-person.
These particular monsters can read minds, you see.
They know every thought, they can feel every emotion, they
can monitor and see everything. Oh yes, I did forget
something, didn't I? I forgot to introduce you to the
monsters.
These are the monsters. Their collective name is the
Euro-Kharzarian Criminal Consortium. It's over a thousand
years old, a collective whose members have presented cute
little-boy and girl faces, and guileless innocent eyes to
the entire world down through the centuries.
But when those eyes look at you, you'd better start
thinking happy thoughts, and saying happy things, and
never, ever, even think, of opposing their wishes.
Because the minds behind them are absolutely in charge.
